TUCSON, AZ — McLane Hendriks, a Coatesville native, was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in December from the University of Arizona after completing his studies in the Race Track Industry Program (RTIP). Hendriks’ experiences both in and out of the classroom have prepared him for a career in the Thoroughbred racing industry. RTIP students take specialized classes in racing operations, the marketing of racing, racing law, as well as many more. The program brings in a diverse group of industry speakers to match students’ interests as well as give them real world knowledge.

Hendriks was able to apply his knowledge during an internship at Pimlico Racecourse this past summer where he worked for Georganne Hale, the Director of Racing and Racing Secretary for the Maryland Jockey Club. Hendriks gained firsthand experience by taking entries and shadowing the paddock judge, placing judges, and stewards.

He also participated in the RTIP’s annual Global Symposium on Racing & Gaming an event that provided him networking opportunities with industry professionals while showcasing his senior capstone project.

Hendriks comes from a family that is very involved with racing. He grew up fox hunting, competing in pony jumper shows, and pony racing. In 2007, he was awarded the Junior Steeplechase Rider of the year and has worked for Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard along with others. Hendriks spent three years of his time at the University of Arizona playing on the men’s club Lacrosse team. In the spring of 2014 he rode in the Maryland Hunt Cup.
