UPPER PROVIDENCE—It may not have been exactly the way Unionville senior Scott Seidenberger envisioned his final match ending in an illustrious career where he posted 85 wins and is on the top ten wins list of all time, as he was on the losing end of a 17-0 technical fall at the hands of Garnett Valley’s Kyle Loeb (sixth place finisher).

But in true Seidenberger fashion, a fourth round loss did not detour him from immediately becoming a supporter of his fellow Indians grapplers, as six Unionville wreslters qualified for the consolation quarter finals with sophomore Mike Caldwell leading the way as Seidenberger and his senior team mates cranked up the volume cheering the youngsters on.

“I am so glad for Mike,” said Indian head coach Chris Matz. “He works so hard all year round and has come so far, it is great to have such a young guy get a chance to go to the regional next week. I am very proud of the way all of my guys have battled this weekend, to have five wrestlers with a chance to reach the semis says a lot about the effort they have put forth.”

Seidenberger, senior Perry Hopkins, senior John Hartz, the sophomore duo of Will Hart and Steve Annan along with Caldwell took to the mat with an opportunity to qualify for the Pennsylvania State Southeastern regional to be held next week at Oxford High School, with Caldwell winning a tight 2-0 victory over Glenn Mills junior Travis Abbott to advance to the semi finals.

In the semis, Caldwell took a 6-3 lead into the third period but had to battle to hang on for an 8-6 win over Marple Newtown sophomore Pat Callaghan, claiming a berth in next weeks regional, before getting pinned by Garnet Valley’s Fred Alderman in the final round, settling for a fourth place medal

“I am so excited right now,” said Caldwell following his semi final win. “Every time I tried a shot, he countered by flipping around but I was still able to get my points. Our upperclassmen have really helped me know what need to be done to get here, I could not have done it with out their support, this is awesome.”

“I am already looking forward to next season and our turn on top of the mountain,” added Matz. “With guys like Mike and Bobby (Murray) along with Zach (Pfieffer), Will (Hart) and Steve (Annan) we have so much talent that will be returning next season. It is going to be something special.”
