Obituaries: Marie R. Hall

Marie R. Hall

Family and friends of Marie R. Hall, 92, were profoundly saddened by Marie’s sudden passing on May 14, 2024. She was surrounded by her husband and three children.

Marie was born in 1932 in New York City to Ruth Adele and Frederick George Albert Roettger. While attending East Orange, NJ High School, Marie met Lewis (“Chokey”) Hall, Jr. and they have been partners together ever since; Marie and Chokey would have celebrated 70 years of marriage in August.

Marie graduated from Berkely Secretarial College in 1952, and in 1954 as newlyweds, Marie and Chokey moved to Lafayette, Indiana. While there, Marie worked at Purdue University for the Chair of the Biochemistry Department while Chokey pursued his PhD in Organic Chemistry. Marie often said that this time spent beginning their life together in Lafayette was among her happiest.

Marie and Chokey left Purdue in 1959 and lived in both Pennsylvania and Delaware before settling in Chadds Ford, PA in 1966. After her children were all in elementary school, Marie happily returned to work as a legal secretary for Larmore, Scarlett, Myers, and Temple in Kennett Square, PA. At the law firm, she learned much about and particularly enjoyed real estate, eventually embarking on a second successful career as a realtor.

Marie was an avid and insatiable reader, consuming one-to-two books every week and always in search of a new novel. If not reading, she enjoyed needlework or perusing a local estate sale or auction for a treasure. Early on, she and Chokey hosted bridge club and played in bridge tournaments earning master point rankings. Marie was an engaged sports enthusiast especially when it came to tennis, attending Wimbledon, the French and Australian Open. Marie was always curious and comfortable traveling the world, discovering new places and meeting new people, yet she especially delighted in her family and her lifelong friends, particularly during her annual time spent in New Hampshire and the Bahamas.

Marie is survived by her husband, Lewis (“Chokey”) W. Hall, Jr., and three children: Richard W. Hall (Tammy), Kristen H. Wevers, and Elizabeth A. Hall; her three grandsons: Justin F. Hall (Megan), Merrit C. Hall, Colby K. Hall, and her sweet great-granddaughter, Emme J. Hall.  She is also survived by her brother, Frederick G. Roettger.

A service celebrating Marie’s life will be held at Winterthur (5105 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, Delaware, 19807) on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 11am. A private burial will be in New Hampshire.

To advance the joy of reading, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Marie’s name to the Rachel Kohl Community Library, Attn: Library Director, 687 Smithbridge Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342, or visit kohllibrary.org.
