POCOPSON — The Barn at Spring Brook Farm in West Chester is announcing that starting July 1st, businesses can substantially offset their Pennsylvania tax liability with a donation that qualifies them for an Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC).

“These tax credits are first-come-first-served and they do go fast, so we want to get the word out to be ready on July 1st,” said Nan Latona, Executive Director of The Barn at Spring Brook Farm,  which has just been designated as an Educational Improvement Organization and approved for funding through the EITC program by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The Barn at Spring Brook Farm is the only known organization in the Greater Philadelphia area that utilizes a variety of miniature and small-sized farm animals to facilitate life-enhancing activities for children 2-12 years old with physical, cognitive and/or developmental disabilities.

A business that donates to The Barn at Spring Brook Farm can now receive EITC tax credits up to 75% of its tax contribution to a maximum of $750,000 per taxable year, in addition to receiving a federal charitable deduction. The tax credit may be increased to 90% of the contribution, if the business agrees to provide the same amount for two consecutive tax years. Tax credits are processed beginning July 1, 2021 on a first-come-first-served basis until credits are exhausted. “Donations will have immediate impact this summer, as we resume in-person programs, including camp, for the first time since the pandemic began,” said Latona, who anticipates the biggest impact will be on the acclaimed Camp Geronimo program, where each child is supported by their own counselor to ensure full participation in animal-assisted activities, field games, nature exploration, and arts and crafts, regardless of their special needs.

“The Barn provides truly unique programming in a fun, judgement-free environment that complements existing educational and developmental goals found in school settings and other therapies,” said Latona.

Entities that are eligible for the EITC tax credit include businesses authorized to do business in Pennsylvania that are subject to one or more of the following: Personal Income Tax, Capital Stock/Foreign Franchise Tax, Corporate Net Income Tax, Bank Shares Tax, Title Insurance & Trust Company Shares Tax, Insurance Premiums Tax (excluding surplus lines, unauthorized, domestic/foreign marine), Mutual Thrift Tax, Malt Beverage Tax, Retaliatory Fees under section 212 of the Insurance Company Law of 1921.

Upon approval, businesses have 60 days to send a check to The Barn at Spring Brook Farm that otherwise would have been sent to the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue when filing the business’ tax return.
