Unionville senior David Kurey is congratulated by his parents before yesterday's game.

EAST MARLBOROUGH — Senior Recognition Day today almost did not happen with the doom of stormy clouds in the distance and the slight rumble of thunder at 3:00.  Miraculously it rained and stormed all around the area but the varsity field at UHS had sunshine and no rain and Sharon Parker called it when she said at the  senior recognition ceremony; ” the sun always shines in Unionville.”

Nine seniors were recognized (the seniors are in bold type in this story) and eight of them were on the field the entire game along with the sole junior Ryan Hissey who caught the entire game and season for the Indians.  Connor Wing, who has been injured most of the season pitched the first four innings and takes home the win on Monday in his final game for his high school career.  Wing faced 16 batters in 4 innings and struck out five with some nasty curve balls that the Sun Valley team could not find.    Sun Valley had only 3 hits off of Wing spread over the four innings.  Wing was aided by stellar defense by his outfield and infield including two plays by Stephen Musser who played second base.

Tyler Fries closed the game by pitching the last two innings and was aided by a beautiful double play by David Kurey and Connor Donze.  Ryan Hissey threw out a Sun Valley player who tried to steal third and Wing who was moved to third base made the tag.

Offensively Eric Arruffo started out the game with a triple which started a rally in the first inning with three runs going into the top of two.  Six  more runs were scored in innings 3 and 4 with the game winning run  by Tyler Fries (4 for 4) being caused by a wild pitch to Chris Fulton.

It was a bittersweet ending for the Unionville Varsity team who is out of the playoffs for the 2011 season.  There were high expectations for this group of boys this season.  Due to a variety of factors things did not go as many thought they would. At least they can hold their heads high on their last outing and as they say you are only as good as your last game.

The seniors who were recognized today were the following; Connor Donze (Shippensburg),Stephen Musser (Northeastern), Connor Wing (Kutztown), Matt Christopher(Washington), Chris Fulton(Juniata), Tanner Guin(East Carolina University), Eric Arruffo(East Carolina University), Tyler Fries (Wilmington College), David Kurey(Bates College)
