Leipold and Bushelow lead Unionville boys’ volleyball team in inaugural Season

New squad off to impressive 7-4 start

Unionville's boys' volleyball player Mark Leipold (no. 5) goes for the "kill"

They may be new, but they seem destined to make their mark.

The Unionville High School boys’ volleyball made a strong debut this season in PIAA District 1 competition.

The Indians Senior co-captains Mark Leipold and Brian Bushelow, pack a formidable one-two punch with “Bush” putting up the sweet sets and Leipold pounding the balls to the floor in front of the astonished opponents.

Defensively, the blocking of Juniors Jimmy Gill and Jake Gross virtually shut down the other teams’ attacks.  The few balls that manage to avoid the block are masterfully played up by the Libero, Senior Kevin Crawford, and Defensive Specialist, Junior Nick Taylor.  Senior Peter Clark contributes in all aspects of the game, even while splitting his chin open on the gym floor last week during a match.  Senior Rafael Pokorny likes to swing hard and finds a way to bounce his kills off the opposing players’ fingertips for points.  Senior Jeff Birkenmaier comes in to add height to the front line attack and block.

Up and comers, sophomore Brian Leipold and freshman Dave Daly, stepped up in the grueling five-game win over Delaware’s A.I. DuPont this past Monday.

Leipold went on a serving rampage.  The team has 7 wins and 4 losses, with an undefeated home record.  Their next match is Thursday, April 28, at home against Delaware State Champion Salesianum High School.
