Unionville softball wins opener

EAST MARLBOROUGH — The coaching career of Kristin McCoy got off to a solid start Monday as her Unionville High School softball team rode a strong opening day complete-game pitching performance by Colleen Beckman to a 4-2 win over West Chester Henderson.

McCoy, named just this month as the new Indians’ acting head coach, replacing John Walsh, watched her squad overcome an early 1-0 deficit after Henderson managed to push home Rachel Gadbow with the first run of the game in the top of the first. Unionville struck back with a pair of runs in the second, with Morgan Cassidy driving home Sammy Carlino and Marissa Walsh driving in Stephanie Hammond. Stephanie Hammond scored what proved to be the winning run in the fourth on a passed ball and Kate Mims scored the final run on an RBI hit by Mandy Hammond in the seventh.

Beckman was solid for the Indians, pitching seven innings with six strike outs and two walks.
Colleen Hoge went 2 for 4, Stephanie Hammond went 2 for 3.
