Hogan: police to battle aggressive driving

Coatesville police will be just one of many agencies in Chester County on the look out for aggressive driving on local roadways, District Attorney Tom Hogan announced Thursday.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan announced Thursday that police in around the county are targeting aggressive driving. Police will focus on motorists exhibiting aggressive driving behaviors such as running red lights, speeding, and tailgating. The enforcement is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project.

“We’ve all seen people drive irresponsibly on the roads,” Hogan said in a statement. “Police will be out in force to make sure those reckless drivers are held accountable. Law enforcement works day and night to keep the roads of Chester County safe.”

Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading factors in crashes and deaths on Pennsylvania highways. Coatesville, Kennett Township, Tredyffrin Township, West Chester, West Goshen, West Whiteland, and Westtown-East Goshen police departments have joined other agencies across Pennsylvania to reduce the number of aggressive driving crashes and fatalities through this Special Funding Project.

Rest assured that local police will be taking this very seriously and putting extra officers on the streets.

“Our department appreciates the opportunity to take part in the aggressive driving enforcement details,” Sgt. Rodger Ollis of the Coatesville Police Department said. “Having additional officers on the street concentrating on speeding, tailgating, and other unsafe behaviors is valuable. The program enhances our ability to educate, increases vehicular and pedestrian safety, and reduces the potential of injuries.”

The participating police departments have a clearly defined aggressive driving issue that was identified by state and local crash and citation data. Each agency created a detailed plan to address their specific problem by identifying when and where the crashes are occurring and target these areas with extra enforcement.

“Police will be looking for anyone who is speeding, tailgating or exhibiting any type of aggressive driving,” Sgt. Justin DiMedio from the West Goshen Police Department said. “Officers will be stopping and citing motorists for this type of driving behavior.”

With the added traffic on local roads during the holiday weekend, motorists are reminded to slow down, take it easy and to allow extra time to reach their destinations — remembering that the important thing is a safe arrival.

“As we kick off the Labor Day Weekend please remember to drive safely and give yourself extra time to get to your destination,” said Lori Aguilera, the Director of the Chester County Highway Safety Project. “Our goal is to save lives and reduce crashes, so we are putting drivers on alert. Expect to be stopped and expect a ticket if you’re driving aggressively.”

He doesn’t have to look very far. Chester County Drivers are the most aggressive and distracted drivers I have seen in my entire driving career.
High beams, tailgating and no turn signals are the norm. We will see how many people they stop. Stay tuned.
