Garnet Valley holds off Unionville girls, 56-45

Unionville's Sydney Hughes leading a fast break in 4th quarter against Garnet Valley.

CONCORD — Unionville High School’s girls’ basketball team couldn’t overcome an early deficit and dropped a non-league game to Garnet Valley, Saturday, 56-47.

The Jaguars jumped out to an early 15-7 lead over the visiting Indians.  After trailing 35-16 at the half — and seemingly out of the game — the Indians rallied and were  able to cut the deficit down to eight — 48-40 — with around 3:00 left in the game.

A Unionville three-pointer that would have cut the lead to 5 rimmed out and Garnet Valley went down and hit a three of its own to stretch the lead back to 11.  It was an uphill battle from there on for the Indians as time simply ran out.

Sydney  Hughes led the Indians comeback bid with 9 points, 5 steals and 2 assists.  Alison Lewis added 16 points.  The non-league loss drops the team’s record to 8-6 (4-2 in Ches-Mont American Division) with an away game at Oxford on Tuesday up next.
