Time to ditch expired medications safely

State police will have collection site at Avondale barracks Saturday

The Avondale barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police will be one of the drop-off sites for Saturday’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which is sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the police will accept unwanted, expired and unused prescription drugs. No personal information is required for drop-off.

State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said in a press release that the DEA sponsors the event to keep prescription drugs, especially those left wasting away in medicine cabinets, from being misused. He noted that prescription drug abuse by teens continues to increase.

In April, a similar effort resulted in a record-breaking collection of 276 tons of unwanted or expired medications. The state police alone amassed more than 3,500 pounds.
