Stephanie White (left), the eventual champion, and Sara Nolan, the runner up, battled for the Kennett Country Club Ladies Tennis championship.

EAST MARLBOROUGH — Stephanie White, a junior from Kennett High School beat out a large bracket this year at Kennett Country Club to claim the Ladies singles champion victory.  White outlasted Sara Nolan (recent Westminster School grad- Hamilton College bound) in a match last Wednesday at Kennett. The final score was 6-2, 6- 0.

The points went back and forth with lots of top spin from both parties.  White would lob once in a while when Nolan was at the net but Nolan would get back and respond with a great return.   In the end White had quite a few “winner” shots to close out each game.

In order to reach the finals, Nolan beat two year in a row club champion Lisa Gosselin in a three-set match. This was Gosselin’s first loss in as long as anyone can remember in the past few years. White had a formidable challenge in her semi final match with Ashley Harris as her opponent.  Harris is renowned for her powerful backhand down the line yet White was able to answer back with her own full top spin forehand   shot return. White won against Harris in two sets.

Stephanie White is the number one singles player at Kennett High School and this will be her third year at that spot.  To watch White and the Kennett girls tennis team in the fall go to KHS Schedule to see when matches are at home in Kennett.

Both girls when asked about their match felt that they did not play their best.  To the observers on the upper deck at Kennett they could not disagree more.  A club member named Fred was overheard saying, “This is better than the U.S. Open.”

There were a fair amount of observers at the match much to Andrew Pogonyi’s delight.  Pogonyi is the head tennis pro at Kennett.  Pogonyi has seen these two young women develop over the years and was very pleased with the final and the level of competition this year.  “We had more participants this year in the club championship and this only leads to better competition.”

Next up for the KSGCC is the men’s final which will be wrapping up sometime in the next two weeks.
