Seven-run fourth dooms Unionville softball, 7-5

KENNETT SQUARE — Unionville High School’s softball team couldn’t overcome a seven-run fourth inning by Kennett, as the Indians dropped a 7-5 decision to the Blue Devils, Wednesday.

Brooke Harner of Kennett put up a string pitching performance, striking out 11 while walking just three in a complete-game performance.  Colleen Beckman pitched fairly well for Unionville, going seven innings with six strike outs and three walks.

Trailing, 1-0,  going into the bottom of the fourth, the Blue Devils broke the game open, pushing across seven runs — which was all they needed.

For Unionville, which kept chipping away after falling behind 7-1, Amy Large scored in the fourth with an RBI from Marissa Walsh.  Kate Mims and Steph Hammond scored in the fifth with RBIs from Steph Hammond and Colleen Hoge respectively.  Kate Mims and Mandy Hammond scored in the seventh with more RBIs from Hoge.  Steph Hammond went 2 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI, Hoge went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Mims went 2 for 2 with 2 runs.
