State wants to help fund environmental projects

Schools, nonprofits invited  to apply for education grants

enved_photosEducational institutions – both private and public – county conservation districts, nonprofits, municipalities, and businesses are invited to apply for funding for environmental-awareness and improvement projects through Pennsylvania’s Environmental Education Grant Program.

Administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Environmental Education Grant Program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993. It mandated that five percent of all pollution fines and penalties collected annually by the Department of Environmental Protection be set aside for environmental education.

Since the inception of the environmental education grant program, DEP has awarded nearly $8 million in grants to support  environmental education efforts throughout Pennsylvania. The funds are used for projects ranging from creative, hands-on lessons for students, teacher training programs, and outdoor learning resources to conservation education for adults.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 6, 2014. For more information, visit http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/environmental_education/13903/grants/588549.
