Unionville Times launches local news initiative

By Mike McGann, Editor, UnionvilleTimes.com

Welcome to Unionville Times.com — a new community digital newspaper. In the weeks, months and years ahead, we hope to be part of your daily routine as you keep tabs on your home, your community and your neighbors. While we expect this site to be part of a bigger effort to change the very face of local news coverage, right now our focus is tight: on the communties of the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District.

First, you should know a bit about me: I’m a former newspaper reporter, editor, and owner — and started writing for my local newspaper growing up, some 30 years ago. I’m also part of the community: I live here, own a home here and have kids in the local school district. This is my home — and I picked it out to be what I expect to be the first of many local news sites we shepard in the coming years.

We’ve posted our guiding principles here, so you know where we’re coming from. Local news matters and telling the stories that make the Unionville area special are what we plan to do.

But as this is 2010, and not 1950, this is a two-way conversation. You can comment on any story, of course. In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to trade ideas, comments and thoughts with our new community forum (yes, it will be moderated. And no, blind, anonymous posts will not be allowed). We also welcome your letters to the editor or even guest columns. If you have something to contribute or something you feel should be said, send it to me. If it meets our publication standards (civil, intelligent commentary primarily), we’ll run it.

If you’d like to know more, offer your opinion or just drop me a line, send me an email. I’ll write back.

Thanks for reading.
