Pictured here are the the power run 10K winners.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>KENNETT \u2014 Small town, big race was the theme for \u00a0last Saturday\u2019s 23<sup>rd<\/sup> Kennett Run. And after the 2,646<sup>th<\/sup> person crossed the 5k finish line in Anson B. Nixon I would say that Anson B. Nixon had quite the crowd for the famous after party of the Kennett Run.<\/p>\n<p>There were 400 runners combined in the other two events held and with the additional volunteers and spectators the park was overflowing with people with an estimate of 5000.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The event organizers could not have ordered a more spectacular day.\u00a0 62 degrees at race start with a slight breeze and few clouds gave many the opportunities to set their personal record.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9426\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/KennettRUn2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9426\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9426 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"KennettRUn2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/KennettRUn2-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The winners of the kids race at the Kennett Run show off their medals after the race.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This was the second year in a row on the new 5k course which takes you down route 82 north to East Locust Drive.\u00a0 And then the fun begins at the two mile mark and the racers take a right on Walnut Road to finish the last mile before entering the park.\u00a0 Walnut Road has two hills that the racers have a new found respect for.\u00a0 The ten k race also follows Walnut Road for their last mile before the finish and it would be accurate to say that running the hills on Walnut Road \u00a0at mile 5 must have been slightly worse then running it at mile 2.5.<\/p>\n<p>Crossing the line first was 31 year old Birbanu Alemu\u00a0 Feyissa, of Silver Spring MD who blazed to a 14:11 time .\u00a0 For the females the victor was\u00a0\u00a0 Hirut\u00a0 Mundetro,\u00a0 finishing 5<sup>th<\/sup> overall in a 16:42.\u00a0 Debbie Pelegrin took home the masters championship for the women in a 21;34 and David Hughes of Newark, Delaware captured the championship for the masters men in a 17:16. Pelegrin is a hometown favorite residing in Kennett Square.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9424\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/KennetRun3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9424\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9424 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"KennetRun3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/KennetRun3-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-9424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 10 K race winners celebrate at the Kennett Run.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the ten kilometer run the overall winner was Derese Deniboba in a fabulous 30:30 on the hilly course for a new course record and a cash prize.\u00a0 Deniboba hails from the Bronx, NY as well as the female overall winner, Alemtsehay Misganaw, in a 35:48.\u00a0\u00a0 My suspicion is that they train together and traveled down here to mushroom country to win some nice cash for their superb running skills.<\/p>\n<p>The first master was 49 year old Frank Perna from Bethesda, MD for a 37:23 and the female, master\u2019s winner was Colleen Williams from Lincoln, University in 44 minutes flat.<\/p>\n<p>When questioned about how she was feeling after her first race directorship of the Kennett Run, Nadiene Friedrich replied \u201cThe turnout was amazing, more than we expected. The weather was beautiful. I think everyone had a great time.\u201d\u00a0 She continued, \u201cWe will not know for another month but we are hoping to give over $40,000 back to the community.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The top sponsors were Exelon and Kelly\u2019s and many other local corporations contributed to the event.<\/p>\n<p>I asked Nadiene who were some of the volunteers who helped out and she said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rotary and Lions Club, Longwood and Kennett fire company, state and local police along with \u00a0Kennett High school students and many of our corporate and power run sponsors.\u00a0\u201cI did see a boys scout troop handing out water at mile two and they were very helpful as well.\u00a0 KAPRB had Claire FInfrock run the food area (with help from Kennett High School track members) and Allison Guzzio a local Kennett Square gal contributed her time as well in the PR position.<\/p>\n<p>To view results from each of the events go to\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piranha-sports.com\">www.piranha-sports.com<\/a>\u00a0 and to view where the charitable gifts are distributed go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kennettrun.net\" target=\"_blank\">www.kennettrun.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In other local running news Sara Finfrock has made it to the states for the POLE vault from Kennett High School.\u00a0 Good luck Sara and to all of the athletes from Unionville who will be competing today and tomorrow at Shippensburg University.\u00a0 Steve Yannocone in the 800 meter run, Perry Hopkins in the javelin and Ian Larsen for the boys pole vault.\u00a0 Courtney Smith, Annie Birkenmaier, Christine Mapa and 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade phenomenon Olivia Young in the 1600 meter run!<\/p>\n<p>Go to Pennxc.com for updated results.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands compete on roadways of Kennett, Unionville to raise money for local organizations By Hannah Christopher, Running Editor, UnionvilleTimes.com KENNETT \u2014 Small town, big race was the theme for \u00a0last Saturday\u2019s 23rd Kennett Run.
