Benefactors, local elected officials gather to celebrate ground-breaking for 9,300-sq.-ft. facility<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

NEWLIN \u2014 For a place the neighbors used to call \u201cthe junkyard,\u201d the already strikingly beautiful ChesLen Preserve is about to get even nicer \u2014 and better for local residents, more user-friendly.<\/p>\n

With Wednesday\u2019s ground-breaking ceremony for the Lenfest Center at the ChesLen Preserve, construction work will begin in earnest on the 9,300-square foot building expected to be complete in early 2013. The building, designed by Archer and Buchanan Architecture, will be used for gathering space for on-site volunteers, as well as visitors and local organizations. It will also provide office space and storage for maintenance equipment for the Natural Lands Trust, which oversees the 1,263-acre preserve \u2014 one of 12 it manages in Chester County.<\/p>\n

Representatives from the Natural Land Trust, local elected officials and the benefactors for whom the building is named \u2014 and the donors of the initial 563-acre tract that makes up nearly half of the current ChesLen Preserve \u2014 Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest, gathered to celebrate the start of construction with a formal program on the 20-acre site where the building will be built.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis opens a new chapter in the history of the ChesLen Preserve,\u201d said Molly Morrison, president of Natural Lands Trust. \u201cThis (building) will give us a first-class base of operations, a hub for volunteers and a gathering place for local organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bill Kelsall, representing his colleagues on the township\u2019s Board of Supervisors, said he marveled at the changes wrought since the property \u2014 former home of a mushroom cannery (and why Cannery Road is so named) \u2014 since it became the first piece of the preserve.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lived next to this property for 56 years,\u201d Kelsall said. \u201cAnd people used to say to me\u00a0 \u2018Oh. You live next to the junkyard.\u2019 I can tell you it\u2019s a whole lot better to tell people you live next to the ChesLen Preserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Kelsall noted that the changes to the property haven\u2019t just had an impact on the property formally preserved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a subdivsion that was supposed to go in just down the road,\u201d he said. \u201cThat would have been 12 units (houses) \u2014 but now, it\u2019s not going to be sold as one parcel, it\u2019s going to stay as a farm.\u201d He said that the impact of the ChesLen Preserve had changed thinking and specifically in this case, slowed or prevented development.<\/p>\n

Plus, he noted, the new Lenfest Center will enhance an experience already enjoyed by many in the township and surrounding towns.<\/p>\n

\u201cI walk on this property, every day,\u201d he said. \u201cI really enjoy it.\u201d He added\u00a0 that since NLT took over the property, various species of wildlife, blue birds and bald eagles, among others, not seen in generation have returned to the area.<\/p>\n

All three Chester County Commissioners, Terence Ferrell, Kathi Cozzone and Ryan Costello were in attendance \u2014 appropriate, as the county donated a second 500-acre tract that made up the original preserve. A later purchase added 195 acres.<\/p>\n

But it all started with the Lenfests.<\/p>\n

And Gerry Lenfest made it clear, in his mind, the real genesis came from a letter sent to him.<\/p>\n

After acquiring the 563-acre parcel, Lenfest originally intended to cluster housing units and preserve the rest as open space \u2014 something that would generally be seen as good thing, from someone buying a large tract of developable property.<\/p>\n

But then a letter showed up that changed his thinking and started him down the path that led to the current state of the ChesLen Preserve:<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a letter from Nancy Hannum,\u201d he said of a communication he got from the late open-space champion and matriarch of the Hannum family. \u201cIt said: \u2018how dare you develop that property.\u2019 That was the beginning of the dream of developing this property for public use.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that dream is being realized in the building of the Lenfest Center. While the Lenfests have been involved in many other charitable ventures around southeast Pennsylvania, including support for the Barnes Foundation art collection, some would argue that ChesLin represents the apogee in giving back to the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been quite a week for Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest,\u201d said Peter Hausmann, chairman of Natural Lands Trust\u2019s Board of Trustees, connecting Wednesday\u2019s event to\u00a0 the Barnes Foundation of which the Lenfests are also major benefactors. \u201cThe New York Times wrote about the new Barnes Foundation in terms of \u2018color, composition, theme, surface, and light.\u2019 Our ChesLen Preserve could be described in the same way: color, composition, theme, surface and light.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted with a smile, \u201cand our exhibition changes four times a year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hausmann said he would argue the work being done in the middle of a Chester County pasture is more important than those many other projects and will have a longer impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be the most permanent and the most giving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Lenfest Center will offer storage and maintenance areas for management of the preserve, two offices for staff, a meeting room for groups of up to 35, an open-air pavilion, lockers and a small kitchen for use by volunteers assisting with management and public restrooms.
