{"id":8328,"date":"2012-04-16T09:30:11","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T13:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=8328"},"modified":"2012-04-16T09:30:11","modified_gmt":"2012-04-16T13:30:11","slug":"cyclists-residents-join-up-to-clean-up-newlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=8328","title":{"rendered":"Cyclists, residents join up to clean up Newlin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Catherine Britt<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Staff Writer, UnionvilleTimes.com<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8332\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/NewlinCleanup1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8332\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8332 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"NewlinCleanup1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/NewlinCleanup1-300x258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ed Stillman, Gary Bianchini (WCCC President), Dan Sabella, and Viktor Ohnjec are set to get to work cleaning up the roadways of Newlin, Sdunay, as part of the township&#39;s cleanup day..<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">NEWLIN \u2014\u00a0 Armed with garbage bags, orange vests, and gloves, members of the West Chester Cycling Club and area residents scoured the streets of the township picking up all sorts of discarded waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">While it might have seemed like an unusual sight, it was just the annual spring clean up day in the township, which took place on Sunday.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The cleanup was the idea of Viktor Ohnjec and other members of the Cycling Club.\u00a0 Onjec contacted the Board of Supervisors with the idea and it went from there.\u00a0 The volunteers met at 8 am and then spread out to three different areas: Brandywine Drive (from around Warpath) to Route 162, Route 162 between Brandywine Drive and Powell and the entire newly paved stretch of Brandywine Creek.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8330\" style=\"width: 274px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Newlincleanup2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8330\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8330\" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"Newlincleanup2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Newlincleanup2-264x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred Rothman, Vice Chair of the Chester County Cycling Coalition scours for trash along a Newlin road way as part of the township&#39;s annual clean up day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cycling Club member Mike Dirks helped coordinate the effort and received the gloves, vests, and bags from the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania program.\u00a0 These were distributed to volunteers like Fred Rothman, Vice Chairman of the cycling advocacy group Chester County Cycling Coalition (pictured).\u00a0 Ed Stillman, another volunteer, followed in his car and collected the bags as they were filled.<\/p>\n<p>Ohnjec noted that this community project was a natural extension for the Cycling Club, which adopted part of Route 842 over four years ago and has been keeping that route clean since then.\u00a0 He said they loved the roads in Newlin Township and wanted to help keep the area clean for all the residents.\u00a0 He noted that these are all multi-use roads and that \u201cwe all deserve a nice, clean environment.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Catherine Britt, Staff Writer, UnionvilleTimes.com NEWLIN \u2014\u00a0 Armed with garbage bags, orange vests, and gloves, members of the West Chester Cycling Club and area residents scoured the streets of the township picking up all sorts of discarded waste.
