But, for many students, their day \u201coff\u201d from academics was a day \u201con\u201d for service.<\/p>\n<p>For the past five years, UCFSD students and their families have honored Dr. King\u2019s philosophy of \u201cdoing for others\u201d through a district-wide service initiative offered at several of its elementary schools and the district\u2019s middle and high school. Unionville-Chadds Ford School District Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Sanville, encouraged students and their families to pick whatever service opportunity appealed to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something for everyone \u2013 so pick your flavor and sign up,\u201d he said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Hillendale Elementary School\u2019s cafeteria was transformed into a soup kitchen. One hundred quarts of soup were prepared along with special hand-made placemats. These were delivered to Chester County\u2019s homebound residents in the West Grove and Avondale areas as part of Catholic Social Services\u2019 Meals on Wheels program. \u00a0According to Jing Han, mother of Clifford Han, a first grader at Hillendale, \u201cWe came to the day of service last year too. It is great experience to get the kids involved in helping our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6632\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/HESMLK12-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6632\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6632 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"HESMLK12-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/HESMLK12-2-270x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bradley Heacock, a sixth grader at Patton Middle School, helps assemble bagged lunches at Hillendale&#39;s MLK event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to making soup, students and their families were busy assembling bagged lunches to benefit Safe Harbor of Chester County in West Chester, an independent, non-profit organization providing food, shelter, and counseling to homeless men and women in Chester County.\u00a0 300 hand-decorated bagged lunches were assembled with local businesses pitching in such as Barnard\u2019s Orchard in Newlin who graciously donated 300 apples for the lunches.<\/p>\n<p>Pocopson Elementary students also offered their time and talents in making blankets and bookmarks to be donated to The Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children and The Children\u2019s Hospital of Philadelphia. \u00a0The district also participated in a community-wide food drive serving the Kennett Area Community Service\u2019s Food Cupboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUCFSD and the entire community routinely put service above self,\u201d said Sanville. \u201cThere are countless examples of our children, parents, and the greater community demonstrating care and concern for the world around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It looks like Monday\u2019s day of service was one more example.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elementary School Students Honor Dr. Martin Luther King through Service Opportunities By Suzanne Misciagna, Correspondent, UnionvilleTimes.com CHADDS FORD \u2013 Students in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School district were off from school on Monday, January 16, in honor of the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s birthday.
