{"id":56780,"date":"2026-06-05T09:36:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T13:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=56780"},"modified":"2026-06-05T09:37:28","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T13:37:28","slug":"on-stage-slambovians-return-to-sellersville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=56780","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Slambovians\u00a0return to Sellersville"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\n<div id=\"attachment_21413\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21413\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/3twJZ89VAQJg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"262\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The legendary New York band, the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams has a strong following in this area \u2013 a following it has been developing for more than two decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It includes avid fans who always attend the band\u2019s traditional \u201cNew Years Eve Eve\u201d concert in Philadelphia and the versatile music group\u2019s show each summer in Sellersville.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovians\u2019 faithful will be heading Bucks County on June 5 for the band\u2019s show at the Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808, <a id=\"OWA3332055b-1c54-b22d-238a-4d8ea7796252\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.st94.com\/\">www.st94.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams, which has been making music since 1998, features a trio of founding members &#8212; Joziah Longo (singer, songwriter, guitarist, leader of the band), his wife Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute, ukulele, theremin, keyboards) and Sharkey McEwen (guitar,\u00a0mandolin, backing vocals).<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The current line-up also features RJ McCarty (keys, sax, banjo, backing vocals), Bob Torsello (bass), and Matthew Abourezk (drums).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams has two new albums on the horizon.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re getting ready to release a new live album,\u201d said Lloyd, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from upstate New York where she and Longo reside.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt was recorded at radio station WAMC and an engineer at the station mixed it.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">WAMC-FM\u00a0(90.3\u00a0FM) is a listener-supported\u00a0non-commercial\u00a0radio station in\u00a0Albany, New York. It airs a\u00a0public radio\u00a0format\u00a0focusing on news and talk with some specialty music shows on weekends.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album\u2019s title is \u201913,\u2019 which was because it was great just to have 13 songs from a great radio show,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cWe did two long sets and the guy mixing it did a great job.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re also adding a bonus track. It\u2019s a recording of when we played the Star Spangled Banner at the Saint Pete Times Forum in Florida.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Saint Pete Times Forum in St. Petersburg is the arena where the Tampa Bay Lightning play their professional ice hockey games.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On October 25, 2008, the Slambovian Circus of Dreams played the National Anthem at the Saint Pete Times Forum. In the NHL game that night, the San Jose Sharks defeated the home team, 3-0.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cRight now, we\u2019re also working on our next album,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cWe might have it ready by Christmas.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re playing two or three of the songs from the album in our live shows now. It\u2019s good for us because some songs demand to be worked on more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started working on it almost a year ago with basic tracks. We really started working on it in February this year.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing the album a long time \u2013 building up studio work and getting more chops. When it\u2019s time, Joziah does the scratch vocals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe use four different studios and share the files. Sharkey\u2019s studio is the main one. Everything is collected and sent to him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe working title for the album is \u2018The Book of Better Things.\u2019 One of the tracks is \u2018I Love Brooklyn.\u2019 It has a Lou Reed\/Bruce Springsteen feel. It\u2019s a great singalong song.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band\u2019s annual area schedule includes the traditional New Year\u2019s Eve Eve show in Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There is also an annual midsummer concert at the Sellersville Theater along with occasional shows at various venues such as Ardmore Music Hall, Havana in New Hope and Elkton Music Hall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band returns to Sellersville bringing a psychedelic-folk-rock ritual that\u2019s equal parts sincerity and spectacle \u2013 stirring up the strange brew they\u2019ve been perfecting since their first gig at the theater in 2006.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This mid-summer show features what the band describes as \u201cSummer Festival set list with new \u2018groovacious\u2019 tunes and classic fan faves.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Led by Longo &#8212; equal parts frontman and mystic &#8212; they\u2019re a traveling Americana seance with accordion, mandolin, slide guitar, the occasional banjo and more. This Woodstock-tinged psychedelia also taps into Southern Rock, Folk and British Invasion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Slambovians have fared really well in the U.K. with positive reviews for shows and strong record sales.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">They have even caught the attention of British rock legends such as the Waterboys\u2019 Anthony Thistlethwaite and Ian Anderson, the founder and leader of Jethro Tull.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Anderson said this about the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams \u2013 \u201cA breath of fresh air in a sometimes stagnant world &#8212; especially as a live act &#8212; with varied eclectic influences and great musicianship.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Plus moustaches, hats and stage presence gild their interesting and thought-provoking lyrics for the curious adult mind.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Slambovians\u2019 show at the Sellersville Theater this weekend has similar function as a sports team\u2019s pre-season session. The band will play at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in August.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\u00a0is an\u00a0annual American\u00a0folk-oriented music and dance festival currently held at the Fairgrounds in Goshen, Connecticut<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The first festival was a two-day event in 1988, and it has continued to grow from year-to-year,<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cSellersville is a prelude to Falcon Ridge,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cIt gets us ready for our festival season.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Another annual (more or less) Slambovian tradition is a trip to England to perform at a big festival along with single shows at smaller venues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On August 30, the Slambovian Circus of Dreams will be performing at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2026 with a matinee show at the <a id=\"OWAdcf35ffc-dd53-7324-d779-75e77dd2f95c\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"View on Google Maps\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/search\/?api=1&amp;query=Greenhous%20West%20Mid%20Showground,%20Shrewsbury,%20United%20Kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenhous West Mid Showground in Shrewsbury<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Slambovians will be performing on August 30 and will also perform a special \u201cThe Circus Does Dylan\u201d set on in the afternoon on Monday, August 31.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">On this visit to the U.K., the Slambovian Circus of Dreams will also have concerts in Shipley, Sheffield, Barnoldswick, York and Milton Keynes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Longo is a Philly native who went to St. John Neumann High which back then was called Bishop Neumann High. Both the school and Longo\u2019s childhood home were located in South Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Slambovians have been described as, \u201cExploring the depths of Americana one trippy tune at a time, influences and elements of Dylan, Bowie, The Band, Incredible String Band, Syd Barrett and The Waterboys flavor the musical mix.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus has released more than a dozen studio albums. Right in the middle was \u201cThe Circus Does Dylan\u201d, an album released in June 2010\u00a0featuring 12 Dylan tracks recorded live between 2005 and 2009.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Seeger and Dylan \u2013 especially in his early days\u2014were known for singing political songs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Wisely, the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus is not railing against the current political situation in America.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cDon\u2019t pick a side \u2013 pick a future\u00a0together,\u201d said Longo.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Lloyd said, \u201cWe\u2019re hiding out from politics completely.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams is closing in on the number 20 for albums released. The band\u2019s latest album, \u201cA Very Unusual Head,\u201d was released three years ago on the band\u2019s own label.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m a pretty stormy unpredictable person,\u201d said Longo. \u201cSo, we called our label Storm King.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe were D.I.Y. for the first four of five albums. Then, we partnered with Sony. But that didn\u2019t work out and then COVID happened.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe started our label with the \u2018A Very Unusual Head\u2019 album as the first release. Since then, everything in our catalog has been re-released.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band has another feature that dates back more than a decade-and-a-half.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing summer shows in the U.K. since 2008,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cWe\u2019ve gone over every year except 2020 and 2021 because of COVID.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In 2023, the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus of Dreams played the Fairport Convention\u2019s Copredy Convention\u00a0in Banbury and was named the \u201cfans\u2019 favorites.\u201d They also played the Wickham Festival which had the Waterboys as headliners.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cOur first time to play in the U.K. was the Rhythm Festival,\u201d said Lloyd. \u201cIt was a classic rock festival with acts like the Animals and the Zombies. Jim Driver, who is involved with the Glastonbury Music Festival, asked us to play at the festival.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Last year, the\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0Circus headed back across the pond for a series of shows, including a pair of festivals \u2014 Devizes Arts Festival in Devizes and First Light Festival in Lowestoft.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The big news in 2024 was the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the band\u2019s debut album, \u201cA Good Thief Tips His Hat.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The album was initially released in 1999 and then re-released in 2021 after the band got control of its catalogue.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe album was never released in the U.K. and is now being released by a British label,\u201d said Longo.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been playing songs from that album. Learning to play songs from a 25-year-old album was like learning new stuff.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Longo has been extremely busy at his home along the Hudson.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m working on three musicals and four new albums,\u201d said Longo. \u201cI\u2019ve been writing a lot.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe musicals are moving along \u2013 starting to happen. The whole skeleton is coming together. I\u2019ve been reading books about scriptwriting. It\u2019s really about articulation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe albums are written and arranged. Matthew and I have been laying down tracks for one of them.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Longo always has multiple irons in the fire.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve also been working on a new book \u2013 a lyrics book with comments,\u201d said Longo. \u201cWriting was quick, but the pictures took a long time \u2013 sorting through 30 years in a sea of photographs.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA Very Unusual Head,\u201d which\u00a0is the band\u2019s sixth studio album, was released January 21, 2022, on their new label, Storm King Records.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA Very Unusual Head\u201d was recorded over four years in five studios and two countries. The album is a step away from the\u00a0guitar-based Americana vibe heard on their previous albums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA Very Unusual Head\u201d is a real\u00a0Slambovian\u00a0tribal project with contributions from many friends and a few \u201cspecial guests\u201d such as Dar Williams,\u00a0Anthony Thistlethwaite (The Waterboys),\u00a0Kolson Pickard (Tall Heights, Pico Romanesque), drummer\u00a0Felipe Torres\u00a0(protege of Carmine Appice and sideman for Davey Jones), drummer\u00a0Matt Abourezk\u00a0(Thin White Rope) and Tristan Tadin\u00a0(keyboards).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Canadian engineer\u00a0Dio Tadin\u00a0(Tristan\u2019s father) recorded the bulk of the album on a former reindeer farm near Peterborough, Ontario and at Big Blue in Cornwall, New York. Tadin\u2019s resume includes work at Daniel Lanois\u2019 studio in Hamilton, Ontario.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Inspired by the Surrealists and early British Psychedelia and the paths they pioneered, the songs on the album deal with topics ranging from the pseudo-scientific to the pseudo-religious realms and other forms of hob-nobbery for fun and profit.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The diverse album has a song about Steven Hawking (\u201cForce of Nature\u201d), the planets (\u201cPluto\u201d) and an inspirational song about the importance of bees in the ecosystem (\u201cBeez (I Know Where the Beez Have Gone\u201d).\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As always, the\u00a0Slambovians\u2019 songs feature great instrumentals accompanied by lyrics that are intelligent, socially aware, witty and mindful. On June 6, the theater will host Jann Klose with Criag Thatcher as the opening act. Then, we released \u201cSong to the Siren (acoustic)\u201d on May 3, 2024, \u201cThe Lost Kingdom with\u00a0Rachel Flowers\u201d on October 18, 2024, and \u201cWhen I&#8217;m With You\u201d on May 16, 2025.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m With You,\u201d did well on YouTube with the official music video passing 130,000 views in the first few months. Directed by Texan-born filmmaker Sam Casey, the video was shot in true stop motion on location in New York City.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe also did an in-store video for Better Liar,\u201d said Klose. \u201cIt was released on May 6, 2026.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe Future Trap\u201d album is a concept album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019ve never done anything like this before,\u201d said Klose.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe whole album is a concept. There are 15 pieces \u2013 including two bonus tracks on the CD \u2013 and they all are directly connected.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe theme is about a character we created \u2013 loosely about myself\u2026.and some others. There is no name for the main character.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe guy who is the central figure can\u2019t keep himself from making mistakes. He\u2019s running away from the past. He\u2019s running to the future, but he doesn\u2019t stop in the present.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt\u2019s a song-by-song story. It\u2019s based on how you overcome this thing that is happening and happening again and again \u2013 making the same mistakes over and over again.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Klose didn\u2019t repeat any mistakes in \u201cFuture Trap.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI had lots of co-writing on this album,\u201d said Klose. \u201cWhen I write with others, it makes me a better writer. Most of the time, it\u2019s a clear collaboration.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Several guest artists appeared on the album including Everett Bradley (Bon Jovi, Seal), Marcella Detroit (Shakespeare\u2019s Sister, Eric Clapton), Rachel Flowers (Dweezil Zappa) and Alphonso Horne (Late Show with Stephen Colbert).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Klose once again partnered with \u201cSurrender\u201d producer Marcus Dembinski. Klose\u2019s new single \u201cFuture Trap\u201d is a dynamic collaboration between Klose\u00a0and Dembinski.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cFuture Trap\u201d is a rare creative partnership in which both of them co-wrote and co-produced the track \u2013 and even performed every instrument on the final recording. The result is a genre-defying sound that fuses reggaeton-inspired rhythms with elements of West African percussion, 80s-style synths, and rock guitar textures.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Klose\u2019s seventh studio album, \u201cSurrender,\u201d was released March 3, 2023.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">According to\u00a0Klose, \u201cThe album \u2018Surrender\u2019 isn\u2019t meant to be understood in the traditional sense. It doesn\u2019t refer to \u2018losing\u2019 per se. Quite the opposite, it\u2019s actually about winning!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWinning, because there is enough strength inside to arrive at a point of true peace. A \u2018letting go\u2019 of baggage and a new, different approach to love, connection and self-awareness that wasn\u2019t present before.<br \/>\n\u201cThe album was created under the most unusual of circumstances. We were dealing with a global pandemic and a complete shutdown of music venues and recording studio.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy co-writer for more than half the album, Alex Forbes and I got together bi-weekly at her apartment in Manhattan and poured our souls into the songs during the strangest of times.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cProducer Marcus Dembinski and I worked in person at our home studios in Manhattan and Queens, then started adding live instruments at Studio G Brooklyn with engineer Cyril Putzer when it became possible.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cA lot of the recording was done remotely. It has become best known through the 1944\u00a0film adaptation\u00a0starring\u00a0Cary Grant\u00a0and directed by\u00a0Frank Capra.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The play opened on\u00a0Broadway\u00a0at the\u00a0Fulton Theatre\u00a0on January 10, 1941.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The play, a clever combination of the farcical and the macabre, centers on two elderly sisters who are famous in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their numerous acts of charity.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Unfortunately, however, their charity includes poisoning lonely old men who come to their home looking for lodging. The two women are assisted in their crimes by their mentally challenged nephew who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and who frequently blasts a bugle and yells \u201ccharge\u201d as he bounds up the stairs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Matters get complicated when a second nephew, a theater critic, discovers the murders and a third nephew appears after having just escaped from a mental institution.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cArsenic &amp; Old Lace\u201d revolves around drama critic Mortimer Brewster, whose engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts\u2019 window seat.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren\u2019t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The \u201cmurderous old lady\u201d plot line may also have been inspired by actual events that occurred in a house on Prospect St in\u00a0Windsor, Connecticut, where a woman,\u00a0Amy Archer-Gilligan, took in boarders, promising \u201clifetime care,\u201d and poisoned them for their pensions.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cArsenic &amp; Old Lace\u201d runs through June 20 and features a themed meal and free parking.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets are $83 for adults and $38.50 for children (ages 4-12).
