{"id":55932,"date":"2025-09-11T09:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=55932"},"modified":"2025-09-11T09:06:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:06:09","slug":"on-stage-veteran-acts-hit-local-venues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=55932","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: Veteran acts hit local venues"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_20856\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20856\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/EricAndersen_6903_cPaoloBrillo-768x512-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20856\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eric Andersen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the next few days, there will be several music acts playing shows in the area which have longevity as part of their DNA.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will be singer\/songwriter Eric Andersen, whose first album was released in 1965.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will be Orleans, a veteran band of hitmakers who have been making music since 1972.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will be Humbleman Band, a Philly staple that formed just before the turn of the century.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Actually, there are six if you count Eric Clapton at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on September 13, Janis Ian at the Sellersville Theater on September 11 and The Who\u2019s \u201cFarewell Tour\u201d show in Atlantic City which was rescheduled for September 12 after a cancellation of their August 23 show.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On September 11, Eric Andersen will headline a show at the Fallser Club (3721 Midvale Avenue, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/thefallserclub.com\/\">thefallserclub.com<\/a>) and treat fans to an introduction to the songs from his new album, \u201cDance of Love and Death.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>The album, which features 17 new songs, is the first studio album of the artist\u2019s songs since 2003. He will perform songs from the new album as well as others spanning his career.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI didn\u2019t write the songs all at once to make the album,\u201d said Andersen, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from New York City.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m in New York now at an apartment that I\u2019m renting for five weeks. All the shows on this tour are in the Northeast from Maine to Washington, D.C. So, we can do a show and then head back to New York.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been living in the Netherlands for a while with my wife Inge. We have a house near the German border in a town called Ede.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI had done previous recording in Germany for literary albums. I recorded songs for the painter Oliver Jordan\u2019s\u00a0Albert Camus\u00a0exhibition called \u2018Paintings Out of Revolt.\u2019 I also did another one about Lord Byron.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cFor the new album, I was recording over here in New York. The songs are all basically new \u2013 they were me.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s an album about truth and love. I had a lot of guest artists including Larry Campbell and my wife.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>The list of special guest musicians including\u00a0Lenny Kaye,\u00a0Eric Lee,\u00a0Joyce Andersen,\u00a0Tony Garnier,\u00a0Michele Gazich,\u00a0Robin Batteau,\u00a0Mark Dann,\u00a0Abby Newton,\u00a0Mike Visceglia, Jagoda,\u00a0Cheryl Prashker\u00a0and\u00a0Wyatt Offit. The album was produced by\u00a0Steve Addabbo.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Addabbo is also on the bill at Thursday night\u2019s show as is Philly\u2019s legendary singer\/songwriter Kenn Kweder. Addabbo will accompany Andersen on guitar in his headlining set.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cOther musicians have told me that this is the best album I\u2019ve done since \u2018Blue River\u2019 in 1973 and \u2018Ghosts Upon the Road\u2019 in 1989. It has 17 songs. The songs just came prancing along the way.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cSongwriters take dictation. The song taps you on the shoulder and you write. The songs come through lyrics and guitar. You just take the dictation. That\u2019s not to say that you don\u2019t go back and tweak it later.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some of the songs destined to be crowd pleasers in the upcoming shows are \u201cAfter This Life\u201d and \u201cSeason in Crime (Crime Scenes).\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI have a new song that I wrote a few days before I came over,\u201d said Andersen. \u201cIt\u2019s called \u2018Stand Up and Resist.\u2019<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m going to record it in New York. It\u2019s kind of an anthem. Why is it so difficult to stand up from the chair and resist?\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Andersen first came to prominence as a performer in Greenwich Village in the early 1960s and immediately became part of the Village folk and songwriter scene and was at the epicenter of the<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>American Greenwich Village singer-songwriter explosion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Aside from his own classics, he\u2019s co-written songs with Lou Reed, Townes Van Zandt, Rick Danko, and Bob Weir (Grateful Dead). And his songs have been covered by many artists including Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Fairport Convention and Peter, Paul &amp; Mary.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He is featured in an Andy Warhol film (\u201cSpace\u201d) and in many music documentaries. A full-length documentary about Eric Andersen, \u201cThe Songpoet\u201d (released 2019) is available for streaming on PBS.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He has broken the boundaries of songwriting with a 26-minute recitative and incorporating literary influences and works in his writing. He is currently working on a memoir.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Andersen has toured the world and released more than 30 albums of original music. In 2022, a 3-CD tribute album was released with artists (including Bob Dylan, Janis Ian, Richard Shindell, Linda Ronstadt, Happy Traum, Dom Flemons and many others) interpreting and covering his songs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cEric Andersen in (Spoken) Pieces\u201d is a compilation of his spoken\/recitative works. It was released as a<br \/>\ndigital album on November 29, 2024.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The live album, \u201cBlue River Live in Tokyo\u201d from a 2012 performance in Japan commemorating the 40th anniversary of his \u201cBlue River\u201d album was released earlier this year as a digital album and CD.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cDance of Love and Death\u201d was released this year as a digital album, 2-CD set and a double LP. This is his first major collection of all new material since 2003\u2019s\u00a0\u201c<u>Beat Avenue.\u201d<\/u><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Andersen\u2019s best-known songs from the 1960s folk era are \u201cThirsty Boots,\u201d \u201cViolets of Dawn\u201d and \u201cCome to My Bedside.\u201d \u201cThirsty Boots\u201d was recorded by\u00a0Judy Collins,\u00a0Bob Dylan, and John Denver\u00a0to name a few.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cDo I have to play \u2018Thirsty Boots\u2019 in every show,?\u201d said Andersen. \u201cIs the Pope Catholic?\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The evening at the Fallser Club will start with a pre-show interview with Andersen and The Fallser Music Director, Garry Lee.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Anderson and Lee will talk about the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s and also about his long recording career including his lost (and then found) album \u201cStages,\u201d his later work with The Band\u2019s Rick Danko, his move to the Netherlands, the changes in the music industry and what keeps him touring and playing after 50-plus years.<\/div>\n<div>It is billed as \u201can interesting evening of conversation and music.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Video link for Eric Andersen \u2013 <i><u><a id=\"OWAb65edb0b-1f30-b566-e0c2-4524b140bf83\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Cs6VY_KvBdE\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Cs6VY_KvBdE<\/a><\/u><\/i>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show at The Fallser Club on September 11 will start at 7:30 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tickets are $35 online and $40 at the door (online ticket sales end at 6:30 p.m. on the day of the show).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Other upcoming shows at The Fallser Club are Bakithi Kumalo, Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa and\u00a0Youba Cissokho\u00a0on September 12, Jim Boggia on September 13 and The Wildwoods\u00a0with\u00a0Joshua Finsel on September 17.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_20857\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20857\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/17337-350x227.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"227\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20857\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orlean<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The band Orleans has had more than 20 different lineups since its early days in 1972 &#8212; and the group has remained in all but three of those years since then.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Bassist\/singer Lance Hoppen is the only original member still with the band. He was still a teen when he joined the group started by his brother Larry Hoppen (guitar\/keyboards) along with John Hall (lead vocals\/guitar) and Wells Kelly (drums\/keyboards).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The rest of the band today includes his younger brother Lane Hoppen (keyboards), Tom Lane (guitar), Brady Spencer (drums) and Tony Hooper (guitar). The Hoppen brothers handle the majority of the lead vocals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The 2025 version of Orleans will perform on September 12 at Union Terrace Concert Series (200 South St. Elmo Street, Allentown, <u><a id=\"OWAdc324c81-2ec7-f367-4169-2e73160da3d6\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artsquest.org\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">www.artsquest.org<\/a><\/u>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This show \u2013 and the show the previous night in Red Bank, New Jersey \u2013 are different than the band\u2019s usual five-piece electric rock band concerts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThese shows are with the Orleans Acoustic Quartet,\u201d said Lance Hoppen, during a phone interview Monday night from his home in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere are no drums and no electric guitars. Actually, we prefer the full band but there are times when we play different sized venues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe have three more acoustic shows in December. The acoustic shows are very conclusive \u2013 especially in smaller clubs and 250-seaters.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere is a narrative that goes along with the songs. It\u2019s a 50-year story \u2013 a play with an opening, a middle and an end. It\u2019s a 90-minute show.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It\u2019s a good thing for Hoppen that the band isn\u2019t playing two-hour-plus rock shows.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m heavily fatigued,\u201d said Hoppen. \u201cI\u2019m 10 days into COVID and it\u2019s not good.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve had COVID three or four times since 2021. The other times, there were little or no consequences. This time, we had to cancel last week\u2019s shows.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Orleans\u2019 most memorable hits are \u201cStill the One,\u201d \u201cDance with Me,\u201d and \u201cLove Takes Time.\u201d \u201cStill the One\u201d is Orleans\u2019 highest charting hit topping out at Number 5 in 1976.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The ABC network used it as its theme song to promo the 1977-78 and 1979-1980 television seasons.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt continues to be one of the most licensed songs ever for television, movies, commercials &#8212; and political campaigns,\u201d said Hoppen.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt is a publishing deal. They have to get rights to use the song. After they do that, they can use the original or a soundalike or a live version.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Orleans, which has recorded 17 albums and four DVDs, still is high demand for live shows \u2013 maintaining a 50-year tradition. And the current roster continues to produce a high level of integrity and musicianship.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen COVID came, we were coming up on our 50th year,\u201d said Hoppen. \u201cWe did four productions for YouTube. We were going to make an anniversary record.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cInstead, we did a Christmas record in the fall of 2021. We never got back to the 50th because COVID took us off the road.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe have been in the studio lately. We have two songs finished, two nearly done and one to go. The album will be out in the spring with as many as 15 \u2013 including some remakes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWith the five new ones, we play all but one in our live line-up\u2026if not four, then three\u2026if not three, at least two.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe do have a lot of \u2018must play\u2019 songs. These are songs people really like such as \u2018Reach a Little Bit Higher,\u2019\u2018Let There Be Music,\u2019 \u2018Time Passes On\u2019 and \u2018No More Than You Can Handle.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cOf course, the main ones are \u201cStill the One,\u201d \u201cDance with Me,\u201d and \u201cLove Takes Time.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Video link for Orleans Acoustic Quartet &#8212;<u><a id=\"OWAffd57539-e021-97c2-39dd-ad14201ac042\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/v2YbXyYqFyc\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/v2YbXyYqFyc<\/a><\/u>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show in Allentown on July 12, which has DMC DUO as the opening act, will start at 6 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Admission is free.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It\u2019s almost inconceivable that a band would put out a pre-show request that fans should avoid the show \u2013 but that\u2019s what Humbleman Band did this summer<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Humbleman Band was scheduled to perform on June 14 from noon-4 p.m. at \u201cArt on the Ridge: Saturday Artist Market\u201d at Pocket Park\u00a0in the Roxborough section of Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On the band\u2019s website, it asked fans to stay away from the event, which was billed as a \u201cA cultural initiative supporting local artists through rotating exhibits, pop-up markets, interactive installations, along with\u00a0sip, treats with live music.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The band has no problem with the promoter, the sound system or event vibe. The parade has an estimated $45 million total cost<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The <u><a id=\"OWA34e837ea-a954-5db4-080e-5bc6dcee6cd3\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/metrophiladelphia.com\/shapiro-democrats-fight-against-trump-agenda\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">anti-Trump<\/a><\/u>\u00a0nationwide movement known as \u201cNO KINGS Nationwide Day of Defiance\u201d coincided with Trump&#8217;s 79th birthday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There were more than 1,700 \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests in the U.S., the Virgin Islands, Mexico, Canada, Africa, and across Europe.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Philly event took place at LOVE Park in Center City Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The loss of one gig hardly proved to be a setback for Humbleman Band.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe just finished wrapping up our next album which has been two years in the making,\u201d said Cooper. \u201cWe went into the studio a few months ago.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe recorded the rhythm section in a big studio &#8212; Rittenhouse Soundworks in Germantown. Then we did the overdubs at our home studio, J-Street Studios.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe last recordings happened in March. Then we sent it to Rittenhouse Sound for mixing and mastering.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe\u2019ll probably have an \u2018official\u2019 record release in November at <a id=\"OWAb8748de6-930f-6b65-84b1-c3b0b0be2ada\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: https:\/\/humbleman.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=9fb35d6820245976c68c6c3f3&amp;id=b32b356b24&amp;e=34f6ae8847. The people that run that club saw us at our recent show at the Mermaid Inn. They liked what they heard and sked us to play their club.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>The album\u2019s title is \u201cLooking Up\u201d and it is well-named. The LP, which has an up-tempo feel and an uplifting vibe, is the band\u2019s best recording yet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe title track \u2013 \u201cLooking Up\u201d \u2013 showcases the group\u2019s optimism with lyrics such as, \u201cNot so bad, could be worse, could be surrounded by flowers in the back of some hearse\u201d and \u201cThings are looking more up, my friend, that\u2019s how I\u2019m feelin\u2019 today.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Like many of the songs on the album, the title track gets your lips smiling and your foot tapping.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Humbleman Band will be introducing many of the songs on September 13 when it headlines a show at Dawson Street Pub (100 Dawson Street, Phildelphia, <u><a id=\"OWA6306c84a-a624-e567-84d3-28b9ed787350\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/dawsonstreetpub.com\/\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">dawsonstreetpub.com<\/a><\/u>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Humbleman Band is one of the Philadelphia area\u2019s longest-running rock bands \u2014 and a band which has been involved in projects all over the country.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The talented sextet, whose members reside mostly in the northwest region of the Philadelphia area, will have the opportunity to play a gig in its own backyard this weekend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Humbleman\u00a0Band\u2019s current line-up is Charlie\u00a0Cooper\u00a0\u2013 writer, vocals, guitar; Wain Ballard \u2013 lead guitar; Kim Alexander \u2013 vocals; Boz Heinly \u2013 bass; Rob Sanders \u2013 violin; and Buck Buchannan \u2013 drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cHumbleman Band\u00a0was formed in 1999,\u201d said \u201cCholly\u201d\u00a0Cooper. \u201cI was in a band with our drummer Buck Buchanan. Three of us were living near each other in South Philly and we gradually picked up people.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe third guy was bassist Bruce Koch, who just died a year ago from a massive heart attack. That was a real loss \u2013 as a friend and as a bandmate.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe weren\u2019t sure we were going to pick up the pieces. We were using hired hands to fill in. We added a permanent bass player \u2013 Boz Heinly, who lives in Plymouth Meeting.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe get along really well musically and as friends. We have a lot of respect for each other.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Humbleman Band, which has been billed as \u201cOriginal blues, funk, rock &amp; reggae,\u201d is not very prolific when it comes to releasing albums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe seem to have a cycle of putting out an album every five years,\u201d said\u00a0Cooper. \u00a0\u201cWe put out an album a few years ago called \u2018Least Bad of\u00a0Humbleman\u00a01984-2009.\u2019<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThat album was a 25-year compilation starting with our days in 1984 as a punk band called The Proles.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>The band released its albums \u201cLate Bloom\u201d in fall 2014 and \u201cBeautiful Day\u201d in November 2018.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201c\u2018Late Bloom\u2019 was self-produced \u2013 and mostly D.I.Y.,\u201d said\u00a0Cooper. \u201c\u2018Beautiful Day\u2019 was also self-produced \u2013 and also mostly D.I.Y. We still use DAW (digital audio workstation) REAPER.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Humbleman Band, a rock quintet that is socially conscious, features songs that band members have written and arranged \u2013 songs with lyrics inspired by current events.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Humbleman Band released an EP, \u201cRuff Ups,\u201d in August 2021.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The disc included \u201cTwo Fires Burning,\u201d \u201cSummer 2020 (The Other Side of This)\u201d and \u201cHomo Sapien.\u201d Only one made it to the new LP \u2013 \u201cHomo Sapien.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019ve done two videos for songs from the album,\u201d said Cooper. \u201cThe first was \u2018Homo Sapien,\u2019 which we did a few years ago.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe second is a new one \u2013 \u2018Two Street Sweet.\u2019 We did a video release show for it last Wednesday at the Attic Brewery in Germantown.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201c\u2018Looking Up\u2019 will be available on Spotify and Amazon in late autumn.
