{"id":55854,"date":"2025-08-21T09:22:54","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T13:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=55854"},"modified":"2025-08-21T09:22:56","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T13:22:56","slug":"on-stage-the-who-come-to-philly-as-part-of-farewell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=55854","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: The Who come to Philly as part of farewell"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"elementToProof\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff,<\/strong> <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20801\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Static_Social-Instagram_1080x1080_TheWho_2025_National-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Time is running out.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Back in May, The Who announced their final tour of the United States and Canada as a truly grand finale of their illustrious six-decade career.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The legendary duo revealed the news live and Livestream during a press conference at the Iconic Images gallery in Piccadilly, London.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Time is running out to experience a vital part of rock music history.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The name of the tour is \u201cThe Song Is Over North America Farewell Tour\u201d\u00a0(named after The Who\u2019s 1971 classic song).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Music fans \u2013 act now before time runs out.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Who will be playing two shows in the area \u2013 August 21 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena, (3601 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticketmaster.com\/xfinity-mobile-arena-tickets-philadelphia\/venue\">www.ticketmaster.com\/xfinity-mobile-arena-tickets-philadelphia\/venue<\/a>) and August 23 at Boardwalk Hall (2301 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, N.J., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boardwalkhall.com\/\">www.boardwalkhall.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Time is running out to hear a band from the original \u201cBritish Invasion\u201d in the mid-1960s perform live in concert.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">A review of the eight major British Invasion bands shows that the survivors are the Rolling Stones, the Hollies and The Who.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Zombies are still together but discontinued touring this year because of Rod Argent\u2019s health problems.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Kinks are rumored to be re-forming with three of the four original members \u2013 Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory \u2014 but who knows if that will ever happen.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Beatles obviously are history as is the Dave Clark Five with Clark the only original member still alive.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Animals have been deceased for decades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Yardbirds keep touring with just one original member \u2013 drummer Jim McCarthy (who never sang or wrote any of the band\u2019s hits) while Herman\u2019s Hermits has only Herman (Peter Noone) as a surviving original.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">So, if you want to hear a live show by one of the remnants from perhaps the best era of British rock, you need to act now. If you snooze, you lose.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">In the Livestream press conference with Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, the two veteran musicians discussed the past and the present.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m not crazy about touring, but whenever I walk on stage, I do my best,\u201d said Townshend. \u201cBut being on the road is not a great way to live.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Who\u2019s first experience with paying to a ticketed audience in America was the Murray the K Show in New York in 1967. The band\u2019s first major U.S. appearance at the\u00a0Monterey International Pop Festival in California in 1967.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">America\u2019s love affair with The Who live began 58 years ago when the band were part of \u201cMurray The K\u2019s Music in the Fifth Dimension,\u201d a series of showcase events at RKO\u2019s 58th Street Theatre in New York over nine days in March and April 1967.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The band played just three songs \u2013 \u201cI Can\u2019t Explain,\u201d \u201cSubstitute\u201d and \u201cMy Generation.\u201d Other acts on the bill included Cream, Smokey Robinson &amp; The Miracles, Simon &amp; Garfunkel, and Wilson Pickett.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Later that summer, it was at the seminal Monterey International Pop Festival in California that The Who rose to prominence in a defining moment of the Summer of Love.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Daltrey remembered what it was like to be in London at that time.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201c<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Every young musician\u2019s dream was to make it in America,\u201d said Daltrey. \u201cTo have America take us to its hearts meant so much to us. They\u2019ve been so loyal to us.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">With one final tour, Daltrey and Townshend are rewarding that loyalty.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt will be great to do it while I can still sing the songs in the same key,\u201d said Daltrey. \u201cPete is still playing great guitar, and the music still has a vitality that suits it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThere is something about the way Pete\u2019s music is written and the way it\u2019s shaped and the sentiment behind it, it doesn\u2019t seem to age like a lot of rock music does.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Who had many monumental moments \u2013 performing the concept album \u201cTommy\u201d at the Fillmore East, playing as the sun rose behind them onstage at Woodstock, and releasing another concept album,\u00a0\u201cQuadrophenia.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Who, who undertook their first \u2018farewell\u2019 tour in 1982, officially split in 1983.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">They occasionally re-formed for live appearances such as\u00a0Live Aid\u00a0in 1985, a 25th-anniversary tour in 1989 and a tour of\u00a0\u201cQuadrophenia\u201d during 1996-1997.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Who\u2019s classic lineup featured lead vocalist\u00a0Roger Daltrey, guitarist\u00a0Pete Townshend, bassist\u00a0John Entwistle\u00a0and drummer\u00a0Keith Moon.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Moon, who was regarded as one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music, died in 1978 from an overdose of\u00a0clomethiazole, a drug intended to treat or prevent symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Entwistle\u2019s death in 2002 was due to a heart attack induced by an undetermined amount of\u00a0cocaine. Entwistle already had severe heart disease and usually smoked 20 cigarettes a day.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The current line-up for The Who is Roger Daltrey &#8211; Lead Vocals; \u00a0Pete Townshend &#8211; Lead Guitar, Vocals; Simon Townshend \u2013 Guitar; Loren Gold \u2013 Keyboards; Jon Button \u2013 Bass; Scott Devours \u2013 Drums; Jody Linscott \u2013 Percussion; and John Hogg &#8211; Backing Vocals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Daltrey turned 81 on March 4 and Townshend hit 80 on May 19.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cToday, Roger and I still carry the banner for the late Keith Moon and John Entwistle and of course, all of our longtime Who fans,\u201d said Townshend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cRoger and I are in a good place, despite our age, eager to throw our weight behind this fond farewell to all our faithful fans, and hopefully to new ones who might jump in to see what they have been missing for the last 57 years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThis tour will be about fond memories, love and laughter. Make sure you join in.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The Who\u2019s set list for the tour includes many of the band\u2019s classic songs including \u201cWon\u2019t Get Fooled Again,\u201d \u201cMy Generation,\u201d \u201cBaba O\u2019Riley,\u201d \u201cI Can\u2019t Explain,\u201d\u00a0\u201cWho Are You,\u201d\u00a0\u201cBehind Blue Eyes,\u201d \u201cSee Me, Feel Me,\u201d \u201cYou Better You Bet\u201d and \u201cPinball Wizard.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI don\u2019t think there is a way we can do any of the shows without \u2018Won\u2019t Get Fooled Again,\u2019 \u2018Baba O\u2019Riley\u2019 and \u2018Behind Blue Eyes,\u2019\u201d said Daltrey.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cUs performing this last time is just to say thank you.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Townshend said, \u201cWell, all good things must come to an end.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The tour will continue at legendary venues such as Fenway Park (Boston), Madison Square Garden (New York), United Center (Chicago), Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles) and MGM Grand Garden Arena (Las Vegas).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Video link for The Who &#8212; <a id=\"OWAfa3faed1-fb05-c497-3923-d687322073b5\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LNkaExfOS3Q\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/LNkaExfOS3Q<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Opening for The Who in Philadelphia will be ZZ Ward.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20802 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ZZWard-11-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>ZZ Ward was born in nearby Abington in Montgomery County.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Surprisingly, Abington has produced a number of artists who have been successful in show business including TV host Bob Saget, actor Joey Lawrence, singer Alecia Moore (better known as Pink) and musician Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">But Ward only lived in Abington as a young child<i>. <\/i>Later<i>, <\/i>her family relocated to the Pacific Northwest.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was born in Abington and then grew up in Bucks County &#8212; in Churchville,\u201d said Ward, during a phone interview.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy mom went to Germantown High, and my dad went to Hatboro-Horsham High.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy mom grew up as a city girl and she wanted to get out in the open air. So, our family moved to Oregon &#8212; to Roseburg, Oregon. It was a small town<i>,<\/i>\u00a0and we lived a half-hour outside town on a 23-acre farm lot.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">It was there that Ward got interested in music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cMy dad was in a blues band,\u201d said Ward. \u201cWhen I first started listening to the blues, the sincerity of the artists resonated in me. Something in their voices made me love the blues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI was in my first blues band when I was 12 or 13. I\u2019d come out with my Fedora on and sing Albert King\u2019s \u2018As the Years Go Passing By.\u2019 I was also listening to hip-hop artists<i> <\/i>and the stories they were telling.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI went to a community college. I played hip-hop shows when I was there. I was also singing songs with my dad\u2019s blues band. He taught me how to play harmonica. But there was no opportunity for music where I was living so I had to move to L.A.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Once in Southern California, Ward began making her own music &#8212; starting with the \u201cEleven Roses\u201d mixtape in February 2012 and the \u201cCriminal\u201d EP in May 2012.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Since then, she has made four albums \u2013 \u201cTil the Casket Drops\u201d (2012), \u201cThe Storm\u201d (2017), \u201cDirty Shine\u201d (2023) and \u201cLiberation,\u201d which was released this year in March &#8212; and four EPs \u2013 \u201cDays\u201d (2013), \u201cLove and War\u201d (2015), \u201cWhere Did All the Love Go\u201d (2024) and \u201cMother\u201d (2024).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cLiberation (Deluxe Edition)&#8221; will come out on September 19.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI\u2019m always trying to write incredible songs,\u201d said Ward. \u201cI don\u2019t limit myself to how I write. It could be keyboards, guitars or tracks. Jones is an American musician, songwriter, record producer and arranger, best known as the frontman of the band\u00a0Booker T. &amp; the M.G.\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">As part of the first house band for Stax Records, he formed the category-defining group Booker T. &amp; the M.G.\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">While still in high school, Jones co-wrote the group\u2019s classic\u00a0instrumental\u00a0\u201cGreen Onions,\u201d which was an international sensation, selling more than one million copies and winning a place among Rolling Stone\u2019s top five hundred songs of all time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Jones, who turned 80 last year, has also worked in the studios with many well-known musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries, earning him a\u00a0Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Over the years, he has recorded with Carlos Santana, Priscilla Coolidge, Otis Redding,\u00a0Sheryl Crow,\u00a0Eddie Floyd,\u00a0Willie Nelson, Levon Helm, Albert King, Rosanne Cash and Rod Stewart.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The list also includes LeAnn Rimes, Rita Coolidge, Bill Withers, Natalie Cole, Linda Ronstadt, Richie Havens, John Lee Hooker, Elton John\u00a0and\u00a0Leon Russell, Neil Young, Shawn Colvin, Boz Scaggs, Rodney Crowell and Steve Perry.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Video link for Booker T. Jones &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/A61c4FgxZz8\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/A61c4FgxZz8<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Tickets for the show at Boardwalk Hall start at $53.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Another act that is playing Philly this weekend is an act at the other end of the rock music spectrum \u2013 a local band that got rolling after the pandemic and has yet to release its debut LP as opposed to an international band whose career spans more than six decades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">That local band is Valendina \u2013 a Delaware Country band that will celebrate the release of a new EP at a show at PhilaMOCA (531 North 12th Street, Philadelphia, <a id=\"OWA56bdd9b5-6e9d-f338-b6dc-eea82800ef41\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.philamoca.org\/\">www.philamoca.org<\/a>) on August 22.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Valendina features Ridley\u2019s Karina Patricelli on vocals and bass, Prospect Park\u2019s Chase Sakers on guitar and vocals, Tinicum\u2019s Tommy Kenish on guitar and Ridley\u2019s Eric Miller on drums and vocals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re all Delco,\u201d said Patricelli, during a phone interview Monday night. \u201cTommy graduated from Interboro. Eric is from Ridley. Chase is from Prospect Park and a graduate of Malvern Prep and I graduated from Ridley.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe met at the Let There Be Rock School. We took lessons at the school and were in their band program. We got to be friends there.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAs time went on, me and Tommy wanted to write original music. We started a band a little before the pandemic.<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIt was very low key. We really started to hit the ground kicking after the pandemic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe lineup of the band has changed. Me and Chase and Tommy are the original members, and we all mesh so well together. When Eric joined, it still all meshed really well.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Valendina\u2019s first recordings were a single and an EP in 2021.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe released a single called \u2018One Reason\u2019 and an EP titled \u2018Twisted Hands of Time,\u2019\u201d said Patricelli.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cNext was our single \u2018Thrill of the Chase\u2019 in 2022. We put out a single \u2013 \u2018Bold &amp; Brash\u2019 \u2013 in 2023 and an EP \u2013 \u2018Soften the Blow\u2019 later that year.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe recorded \u2018Soften the Blow\u2019 in 2022 and put it out in November 2023. We cut the EP at Studio 4 in Conshohocken with Ron DiSilvestri pricing and mixing.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Studio 4 Recording is a studio owned and run by Phil Nicolo, a well-respected producer,\u00a0mixer,\u00a0mastering engineer,\u00a0studio owner and Grammy Award Winner.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">Valendina\u2019s recording output in 2024 consisted of two singles \u2013 \u201cSweeten the Victory\u201d and \u201cBreak It Off.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">This year, Valendina\u2019s recording output features two EPs \u2013 \u201cRicky Bobby\u201d and \u201cSweeten the Victory.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">The latest EP was also recorded at Studio 4 Recording with Phil Nicolo at the helm.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe EPs \u2018<a id=\"OWAb22c3d91-ba9f-5eb9-a173-38039e8728df\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/metrophiladelphia.com\/valendina-silk-city-performance\/\">Sweeten The Victory<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018Soften the Blow\u2019 are definitely related,\u201d said Patricelli, who graduated from Temple after majoring in media studies and production.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe new one is like a sister EP. The first one was definitely darker. I wanted to make sister album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThe songs were definitely intertwined. \u2018Sweeten the Victory\u2019 is the older, more confident sister to \u2018Soften the Blow.\u2019<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cThere is a Delco vibe with our music. It comes out. We bring our roots, for sure.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cPhilly is definitely reflected in this music too. I went to college in Philly \u2013 Temple University \u2013 and that added to the Philly influence.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There are many layers to the music made by Patricelli and Valendina.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI very much like storytelling through my music \u2013 my upbringing \u2013 watching my friends grow up,\u201d said Patricelli.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cI have put inflections with my life in Delco, the place where I came from \u2013 watching the way life was going on through those times.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cAt the end of the day, we have to do what is right and make the most of little things.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">There is also a bigger thing on the horizon \u2013 a debut album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cWe\u2019re starting to get back into writing,\u201d said Patricelli. \u201cMaking an album will be our next step. We have five or six songs already done.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementToProof\">\u201cIn our live set, we\u2019ll play the entire new EP and some crowd pleasers.
