Students and parents received blue braclets \u2014 while many teachers, staff and parent volunteers sported navy blue t-shirts noting the Blue Ribbon honor.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then the real celebration kicked off in the school\u2019s gym\/auditorium.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5537\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/BlueRibbon-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5537\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5537 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"BlueRibbon-4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/BlueRibbon-4-300x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elizabeth Williamson of the Philadelphia office of the Department of Education presents Pocopson Elementary School principal Dr. Andrew McLaughlin a certificate proclaiming his school a Blue Ribbon award winner.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Students, parents, district dignitaries including Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Sanville, his predecessor, Sharon Parker, Assistant Superintendent Ken Batchelor, the District\u2019s director of Elementary Education Dr. John Nolen, and Board of Education members Jeff Leiser, Eileen Bushelow and Holly Manzone \u2014 and the board president, Timotha Trigg helped to fill the room \u2014 and were put in a festive mood by the PES Dispensers, a faculty rock-n-roll band.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Andrew McLaughlin, Pocopson\u2019s principal got the event moving, bringing in speakers including Parker (just back in town from travelling). Parker served as schools superintendent during most of the school\u2019s history and expressed her pride and congratulations to the students, parents and faculty of the school.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5539\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/BlueRibbon-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5539\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5539 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" title=\"BlueRibbon-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/BlueRibbon-2-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pocopson students Jake Ryan and Ally Weaver present a commemorative gift to Dr. Andrew McLaughlin, on behalf of their fellow students, celebrating the naming of Pocopson Elementary School as a Blue Ribbon award winner.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sanville \u2014 who became Superintendent earlier this fall \u2014 was effusive in praise, and wanted students and parents to understand what a big deal the award represents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is like winning the World Series or winning the Super Bowl,\u201d Sanville said, noting just 15 schools in the entire state \u2014 out of roughly 3,000 \u2014 were given this honor.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth Williamson \u2014 acting on behalf of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan presented \u2014 formally presented the Blue Ribbon award to McLaughlin and the school. McLaughlin and some staff members will travel to Washington D.C. later this month for a formal ceremony honoring all of the nation\u2019s Blue Ribbon schools \u2014 more than 300.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5541\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/BlueRibbon-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5541\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5541\" title=\"BlueRibbon-5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/BlueRibbon-5-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Falculty band the &quot;PES Dispensers&quot; wowed students and parents alike, setting he tone for Friday&#39;s event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fifth grade students Jake Ryan and Ally Weaver spoke briefly \u2014 both suggesting the main reason the school is so successful is the work of McLaughlin and the staff and then presented McLaughlin with a commemorative gift.<\/p>\n<p>After a fun video \u2014 featuring students, staff and parents \u2014 it was outside to the hill for the students \u2014 all dressed in blue \u2014 to form a giant blue ribbon on the hillside. Parents were asked to line up around the outside to form a frame.
