I was doing a couple little things there. I was playing resorts, but I got to do my own music. I was in Tulum.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tulum is the site of a\u00a0pre-Columbian\u00a0Mayan\u00a0walled city\u00a0which served as a major port for\u00a0Coba, in the\u00a0Mexican state\u00a0of\u00a0Quintana Roo.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A new airport and a just-opened train station are making this former fishing village on Mexico\u2019s east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula easier to reach.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The holiday show at Jamey\u2019s on Friday night features Cheadle and her group. Cheadle has a band that features blues, soul, funk \u2013 and a lot of Cheadles.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Her four-piece group features her brother Jim Cheadle\u00a0on guitar and her father James Cheadle\u00a0on keyboards along with\u00a0Dave Ferebee, the only non-Cheadle,\u00a0on drums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Whenever Cheadle\u00a0plays the area, it seems that she has a special theme for that particular show.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When the powerful blues\/jazz\/rock singer played Jamey\u2019s back in December\u00a02021,\u00a0it was a\u00a0concert billed as \u201cA Very Cheadle\u00a0Christmas.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On February 11 last year, Cheadle\u00a0came back to The Living Room in Ardmore and presented \u201cLaura Cheadle\u00a0Sings The Sexy Valentine Blues.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Valentine show was actually a release party for my new album on Sony Orchard \u2014 a preview of all the songs on the album,\u201d said Cheadle, during a phone interview Wednesday from her home in Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Christmas shows and Christmas albums are nothing new for Cheadle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI signed a deal with Sony Music,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cI released a Christmas album with Sony on their Orchard label.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ll have a new album coming out on Sony Orchard early next year and then I\u2019ll go out on a support tour. I recorded it at Papa Cheadle\u2019s studio.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been writing songs for four years. It\u2019s my best album yet \u2013 with a lot of emotions.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen the COVID shutdown arrived, I started writing and couldn\u2019t stop. I just relaxed and enjoyed it.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One of the results of her writing outburst was her 2021 holiday album, \u201cLet\u2019s Get Together for Christmas.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt was a family affair,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cI recorded it at my dad\u2019s studio with my brothers and him. My dad was the producer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI did a Christmas album before \u2013 in 2010. It was more of a jazz album. This one is definitely bluesier.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s a Christmas album but it\u2019s a real sexy, sultry album \u2013 very R&amp;B. I really got a chance to showcase my voice.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe music on my upcoming album is also very R&amp;B-based. I just wrote another song the other day. Songs keep flying out.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Next up was a non-holiday album titled, \u201cMannequin.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI released \u2018Mannequin\u2019 on January 1, 2024,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cIt\u2019s gotten four million streams \u2013 which is pretty impressive. I\u2019ve released four singles so far \u2013 and there are 14 songs that didn\u2019t make it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m working on new music now. I plan on putting a new album out next year. I\u2019ll be using the Cheadle Family Band.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>James \u201cPapa Cheadle\u201d has played and recorded with Don Cornell, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Four Aces, Grover Washington Jr., The Soul Survivors, Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cheadle\u00a0has played with her family ever since she was a young girl.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy father has influenced me so much,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cHe\u2019s a seasoned jazz musician who used to be a music professor at Rowan University. So, I\u2019ve always been involved with music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cHe has his own recording studio in South Jersey called the Swedesboro Music Studio and he records a lot of different people. He and I are both devoted to music. His influence on me is blues and jazz \u2013 but I make it modern.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Cheadle\u2019s music career began when she was four years old. Her father created the \u201cAppreciation Choir\u201d for the Persian Gulf War troops in the early nineties and created a music video that was aired on VH1 and MTV. Along with her two older twin brothers and various other children, Cheadle\u00a0toured around the United States singing for audiences.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When she was 11, she enlisted her father to teach her how to play drums. From her \u201ctween\u201d to \u201cmid-teen\u201d years, Cheadle\u00a0was in a band with her brothers called Sibling \u2013 a pop group that played at local restaurants, churches, music venues, private parties and parades.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been in the Philadelphia\/New Jersey music scene for quite some time,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing acoustic stuff since I was 16 and then put my band together later. Sibling was a blend, and I morphed into my music. Songwriting comes very naturally for me. Sometimes, I wake up with a melody in my head. It\u2019s just there.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve always been a super fan of old soul. My biggest influences are Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, James Brown and Stevie Wonder. I love real drums and all the organic instruments. Some of my songs are rock. Some of them are blues. It\u2019s hard to classify me \u2013 maybe pop\/rock with soul influence. I just do what I feel.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Cheadle\u00a0Family has built a strong reputation nationally.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe were on an NBC television show called \u2018The Next Great Family Band\u2019 in 2013,\u201d said Cheadle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThat got us a lot of interest in being booked for tours. They actually came to our place in Swedesboro. The exposure was great.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Fans will get plenty of Cheadle\u2019s music \u2013 old and new,\u00a0R&amp;B and holiday\u00a0\u2013 this Friday night at Jamey\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m staying busy,\u201d said Cheadle. \u201cIn addition to the Cheadle Family Band, I have an all-girl band \u2013 Laura Cheadle and The Girls.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt\u2019s a trio with me on guitar, Emily Roane on drums and my wife Michelle Cheadle on drums. All the songs are mostly Christmas but there are a few Motown songs also in the set list.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI have my regular rhythm section \u2013 Charles Beasley on bass and Tony Day on drums and percussion \u2013 along with Sister Blue on Guitar and Mike Frank on piano.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere also will be several singers \u2013 Ella Gahnt, Reggie Morrow, Sister Blue and me. The band and singers are all Jersey, Philadelphia and Delco.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Ella Gahnt\u00a0is not only her (stage) name, but also a description of the music she plays and of her singing style.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Gahnt\u00a0is a vocalist in the jazz\/traditional pop style who has performed with some of the most talented musicians in the quad-state area of Philadelphia, New Jersey, Delaware and New York. She also has worked professionally as a studio vocalist\/performer for many years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cElla Gahnt, which is my stage name, was given to me by my husband Leon Mitchell,\u201d said Gahnt, during a phone interview.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt comes from the persona I want when I perform \u2013 elegant. I want to be like the performers back in the day who dressed to the nines \u2013 Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nat King Cole. They put on a show. It\u2019s all about entertaining.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show on Thursday evening will also have a Delco-based special attraction.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe will have a special guest speaker \u2013 Claude Edney,\u201d said Chavous. \u201cHe owns the Edney Funeral Home, and he will give a talk about Christmas. He\u2019s from Darby Township and that\u2019s where I\u2019m from,\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous\u00a0is a Delaware County girl all the way.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She grew up in Sharon Hill and graduated from Darby Township High School. She studied for a career in nursing at a hospital in Delaware County. Now,\u00a0Chavous\u00a0is a resident of Lansdown and could easily walk to Friday\u2019s gig if she so desires.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous\u00a0is making a return visit to Jamey\u2019s House of Music \u2013 the venue where she had a CD release party for her most recent album, \u201cBreaking Down the Walls.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe CD is dedicated to my late husband Michael Hayes,\u201d said\u00a0Chavous, during a phone interview from her Delco home. \u201cHe died of cancer in 2014.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe had a tour in Paris in 2019 and two trips to Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rico shows were tributes to Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. One of them raised $3,000 for emergency relief in San Juan. Then, the pandemic hit, and everything shut down.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous\u00a0has been singing her whole life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI started performing and singing in church when I was really young,\u201d said\u00a0Chavous. \u201cThe, my mom and dad managed me. Eventually, I got calls from agents. So, I started putting bands together \u2013 Lisa\u00a0Chavous\u00a0and Friends.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 1989 she began performing with the group Chapter One in banquet halls such as The Twelve Caesars and the Riviera Ballroom. In 1997, Chavous won first prize while competing in the Temple University jazz station talent contest sponsored by B&amp;V outreach. In 1999, she began forming bands that performed for a variety of audiences. These ensembles eventually became known as Lisa\u00a0Chavous\u00a0and Friends.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy first band was a jazz band,\u201d said Chavous. \u201cWe played a lot of jazz clubs including the Blue Note in New York. I was on the jazz side for a while.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe were really blessed with being able to book shows at country clubs in Delco. One night, the sax player couldn\u2019t make the show. So, they sent another cat \u2013 and it was Byard Lancaster.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The late, great Byard Lancaster was an alto saxophonist\/flutist from Philadelphia who was part of the wave of free jazz inspired by John Coltrane. His music had many cultures in its DNA such as blues, reggae and Afrobeat and he lived in a variety of places including Chicago, France and Nigeria. But he always returned to jazz and his hometown.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After watching Chavous perform many years ago, Lancaster said, \u201cI have recorded with Jonny Copeland, and have known Shemekia Copeland since she was a little girl, when I was on the road with her father. I\u2019ve got to tell you the best female blues vocalist to come along since Shemekia is without a doubt, Lisa Chavous.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This quote came from the musician who discovered Kevin Eubanks, the Roots, and Stanley Clarke.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cA couple years later, I ran into Byard at a blues festival in Media,\u201d said\u00a0Chavous. \u201cHe told me there was a blues band \u2014 the Philadelphia Blues Messengers \u2013that needed a vocalist and asked if I wanted to go to Paris. That was in the early 2000s. He opened so many doors for me.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cFor me, getting into the blues was a fluke. I was supposed to be going Motown and playing country clubs. Then, blues came in with Byard. I just became an icon in Philly as a blues singer. People wanted the blues, and it never stopped. I realized \u2013 this music is me.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous\u00a0is frequently compared to Tina Turner, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas, who along with Billie Holiday and Mahalia Jackson are among her primary musical influences. She a been singing in church and performing in shows since she was five in a career that encompasses jazz, blues, soul, gospel and rock.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous\u00a0has performed with jazz greats Byard Lancaster, Odean Pope, Trudy Pitts, Pat Martino, Jimmy McGriff and Bootsie Barnes, and is regularly backed by former members of Patti LaBelle\u2019s band, as well as by Don Evans, former guitarist for Billy Joel.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous, who is a nurse, has also donated her talents at a variety of functions that benefit children\u2019s organizations supporting research for multiple sclerosis and the anti-AIDS foundation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous\u2019 forte is her great versatility in singing jazz, blues, and rhythm and blues, all with tons of soul that projects her sincere love and devotion to her music and that creates powerful audience attraction and response.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chavous is close to releasing a new album.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been back in the studio finishing my fifth CD,\u201d said Chavous.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI have some great music we\u2019ve written over the last few years. We\u2019ve been recording it at Morningstar Studio (Glenn Barratt\u2019s highly acclaimed studio in East Norriton.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI have a lot of shows coming up including Ashley in Glen Mills on New Years Eve. I\u2019ll also be playing at Jamey\u2019s every third Thursday next year.
