{"id":5460,"date":"2011-10-31T17:16:33","date_gmt":"2011-10-31T21:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=5460"},"modified":"2011-10-31T17:16:33","modified_gmt":"2011-10-31T21:16:33","slug":"class-act-henderson-awards-cc-title-to-unionville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=5460","title":{"rendered":"Class Act: Henderson awards CC title to Unionville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">True act of sportsmanship, great performances highlight Girls X-Country District 1 meet at Lehigh<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Dave Conard<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Correspondent, UnionvilleTimes.com<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5466\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/XC121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5466\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5466 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"XC12\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/XC121-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Unionville girls&#39; cross country team took second at the combined AAA\/AAAA District 1 meet at Lehigh \u2014 but because of a quirk of the scoring rules, were placed behind West Chester Henderson for the AAA title (overall winner Pennsbury won the AAAA title) \u2014 but Henderson presented the trophy to Unionville.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>BETHLEHEM \u2014 It may not be a known fact but cross-country is a sport that is all about respect.<\/p>\n<p>Respect for the amount of work required to ready for the season, the number of miles a runner will log over a week of preparation, respect for the course and most importantly respect for the competition.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the PIAA District One championship held at Lehigh University, the ladies squads form West Chester Henderson and Unionville High School, who have battled through out the season in the Ches-Mont League, gave new meaning to word respect.<\/p>\n<p>In a strange quirk as a result of a \u201cunique\u201d scoring system, Unionville who finished second overall in the combined AAA and AAAA grouping, two points ahead of the Warriors, which is what qualifying for the state meet is based on, actually also was relegated to a runner up finish in the class AAA scoring finishing two points behind Henderson.<\/p>\n<p>In the ultimate class move, the Henderson girls led by Janie Augustyn and Amanda Eisman then turned around and awarded the District One class AAA Championship trophy to the Indians, citing the fact that Unionville beat them cleanly.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5464\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/XC27.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5464\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5464 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"XC27\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/XC27-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5464\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">300 runners take off at the starting gun for the District 1 Girls&#39; Cross Country meet.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey were the true winners,\u201d said Henderson senior Augustyn. \u201cWe wanted to win here today but they beat us fair and square, we don\u2019t care what the score said when they separate the groups, they deserve to have the trophy, if nothing else it will make it interesting at Hershey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey (Henderson) are legendary,\u201d said Indians senior Kris Abens, as the meeting of the mutual respect concluded. \u201cFor them to do something like that speaks a lot about what kind of team they are. It also says a lot about how strong the Ches-Mont league is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a race that had more than 300 runners at the start line, miraculously the Indians were able to work their way to the front as a group, feeding off of the pace set by sophomore Courtney Smith, who claimed a class AAA runner up medal and junior Anne Berkenmaier, who finished seventh in AAA, the top two finishers, en rout to a combined time of 1:34:45.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think were able to fly under the radar a bit,\u201d said Unionville junior Berkenmaier. \u201cI don\u2019t think any one expected us to finish in the top three or qualify for states. We knew we could do this and have been running better each week.
