{"id":54459,"date":"2024-08-16T09:31:15","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T13:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=54459"},"modified":"2024-08-16T09:31:17","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T13:31:17","slug":"what-to-do-festivals-celebrate-ethnic-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=54459","title":{"rendered":"What To Do: Festivals celebrate ethnic diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_19795\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19795\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19795\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/festival-of-india.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Festival of India<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Three events this weekend will deal with Indians \u2013 and all will be politically correct.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will be two very different but equally attractive ethnic festivals\u00a0this weekend\u00a0at Penn\u2019s Landing (Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia, <a id=\"OWAd2a173df-c98d-a3ad-bf49-1b3e34572a3b\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.delawareriverevents.com\/\">www.delawareriverevents.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Both of the free festivals deal with Indians &#8212; but not the Native American kind.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>West Indian or East Indian &#8212; both will be featured this weekend.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Penn\u2019s Landing will host the annual Festival of India on August 17 and the annual Caribbean Festival on August 18.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Festival of India, which is sponsored by the Council of Indian Organizations of Greater Philadelphia, is a festive event that features a day full of food, music, dancing and crafts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Visitors can celebrate India&#8217;s 77th Independence Day with various cultural organizations, as well as Northern and Southern-style Indian cuisine such as chicken tikka masala, lassi, vada pav, dosa, as well as classical and Bollywood performances, music, shopping, henna tattoos, and tons of fun. The festival is presented by Indian Organizations in Greater Philadelphia (CIO).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The event will host a variety of vendors who will be selling a wide array of traditional Indian arts and crafts including clothes, jewelry, music, and other cultural items. Traditional Mahandi work (artistic design) will be available to be done on both hands and feet.\u00a0Mahandi or hands painting is an old Indian custom still have been practiced by most of the Indian women.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A wide selection of food items from both North and South India will be available for purchase, including such taste treats as tandoori chicken, tikka masala, kolkata rasgulla, gujarati dohkla, chennai idli, korma and an array of Indian breads including chapatti, poori and nan.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The free festival will run from 2-8 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19796 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/581641377285520285-drwc-summ24-caribbean-festival-1920x1080.full_-350x197.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"197\" \/>Penn\u2019s Landing will host the 38th\u00a0Annual Caribbean Festival (<a id=\"OWA80790991-cc08-d9b1-11a0-65b7868d27d2\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/phillycaribbeanfestival.com\/\">https:\/\/phillycaribbeanfestival.com<\/a>) on August 18.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sunday\u2019s festival, which is free and open to the public, is a celebration of the culture of 14 Caribbean Islands. The event, which runs from noon-8 p.m., features live island entertainment including drumming, dancing and music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As always, the festival will have cultural booths where people can get information about the islands of the Caribbean. There will also be a marketplace with vendors selling Caribbean arts and crafts, fashion items and souvenirs.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Island cuisine will be well represented with a number of vendors offering Caribbean delicacies such as Jamaican jerk-chicken and hard-dough bread, escovitched fish and festival cakes, codfish fritters, Jamaican Patties, curried goat and rice &amp; peas.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In addition to the events focusing on East Indians and West Indians, there is also a festival this weekend honoring the Indians of North America.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_19797\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19797\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19797\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Roasting-Ears-of-Corn-Festival-350x138.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"138\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roasting Ears of Corn Festival<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On August 17 and 18, the Museum of Indian Culture (2825 Fish Hatchery Road, Allentown, 610-797-2121, <a id=\"OWAb190bbf6-3055-de7d-ba5f-e99c2a8ce7ce\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/museumofindianculture.org\/\">http:\/\/museumofindianculture.org<\/a>) is hosting the 44th Annual Roasting Ears of Corn Festival.<\/div>\n<div>The 2024 event, which is Eastern Pennsylvania\u2019s oldest American Indian\u00a0festival, is a showcase for American Indian drumming, singing, dancing and food.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Visitors can watch demonstrations of Native American cooking, flintknapping and arrow making, experience throwing a tomahawk or see what it\u2019s like using an atlatl (spear thrower). There will be a special crafts area for kids where they can make sand art pictures and weave dreamcatchers.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The festival features a wide array of Native American entertainment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Inca flutist Sicanni Purizaca will perform and 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. both days. There will also be performances each day by Native American recording artist Chrystal Shawanda.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Other live music and dance performances\u00a0include American Indian singers, Aztec Fire Dancers, hoop dancers, and American Indian dancers, singers and performers from all over Canada and the U.S.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Festival attendees will be able to shop at the Marketplace for Native American jewelry, fine arts, and clothing. There will also be food vendors with Indian burgers, frybread, buffalo stew, Indian tacos and fire-roasted corn.<\/div>\n<div>Tickets for the festival are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors (age 62 and older) and youth (age 12-17) and free for children (age 11 and under).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You can keep the international vibe going with a trip to either South Philly or Center City.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_19798\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19798\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19798\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/crayfish-party-350x234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crayfish Party<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This weekend, the\u00a0American Swedish Historical Museum\u00a0(1900 Pattison Avenue,\u00a0Philadelphia, 215-389-1776, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanswedish.org\/\">www.americanswedish.org<\/a>) is presenting a special event on August 16 \u2013 the museum\u2019s annual Crayfish Party.<\/div>\n<div>The Crayfish Party, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., provides participants an opportunity to get a taste of Swedish summer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Diners at the Crayfish Party will be able to enjoy a buffet of crayfish or Swedish meatballs, along with crisp bread, cheese, potatoes, cheese pie, and glass of akvavit all outside under the museum\u2019s beautiful lighted and decorated tent.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tickets for the Crayfish Party are $70.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As part of Historic Philadelphia\u2019s celebration at Franklin Square (200 Sixth Street, Philadelphia, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historicphiladelphia.org\/\">www.historicphiladelphia.org<\/a>), the organization is illuminating the park with its annual \u201cPhiladelphia Chinese Lantern Festival in Franklin Square.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fortunately for those who have yet to visit the festival, the attraction has been extended from August 18 until August 31.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Franklin Square will come alive every night with its Chinese Lantern Festival featuring more than two dozen illuminated lanterns \u2013 all constructed by lantern artisans from China.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Chinese-inspired performances will take place in Franklin Square twice nightly. Performances, which celebrate Chinese performance art and entertainment, are 30-minutes long and are scheduled for 7 and 9 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Festival hours are 6-11 p.m. Admission is $25 for adults ($28 on Saturday and Sunday), $23 \/$26 for youth and seniors, and $16 for children.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This month\u2019s edition of the 2024 Kennett Underground\u00a0Railroad Bus Tours (<a id=\"OWA9fb2c90c-9ba7-2c6b-4783-12c684b2dfbb\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/www.kennettundergroundrr.org\/. Participants can discover the untold story of the prisoners of the Fishing Creek Confederacy, imprisoned at the Fort in 1864 and decide for themselves if any of them might still be there.<\/div>\n<div>Activities will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for children (ages 6-12) and military veterans with ID.<\/div>\n<div>For an annual event with a completely different vibe, head west to Lancaster County this weekend.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This year\u2019s Thresherman\u2019s Reunion, which is being held now through August 17 at the Rough and Tumble site (4977 Lincoln Highway East, Kinzers, 717-442-4249, <a id=\"OWA1f70cfd3-62fe-255c-8718-adff835394b9\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/www.roughandtumble.org\/. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.roughandtumble.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.roughandtumble.org<\/a>), is the 75th annual staging of the event.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The daily schedule starts with breakfast at 7 a.m. at the R&amp;T Multi-Purpose. The day\u2019s activities include a sawmill in operation, a \u201cPageant of Threshing\u201d, a shingle mill in operation, a \u201cParade of Power\u201d and threshing machine demonstrations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There will also be displays featuring steam traction engines, antique tractors, threshing machines, Hit &amp; Miss Gas engines, two steam railroads, shingle mill, large gas engines, model engines, sawmill, barker fan, stone crusher, antique cars, stationary bailers, antique wagons and the \u201cStationary Steam Engine Museum\u201d.<\/div>\n<div>Daily tickets for the eeventare $10 for adults and $5 for children (ages 6-12).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On August 17 and 18, the small town of Mount Gretna comes to life with the 50th Annual <a id=\"OWA3135df64-423f-7dfc-22a7-82661215c51d\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mtgretnaarts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Gretna Outdoor Art Show<\/a>\u00a0(Route 117 and Pennsylvania Avenue, Mount Gretna, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtgretnaarts.com\/\">www.mtgretnaarts.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The annual event features art, music, and food &#8212; all displayed on the historic grounds of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mt. Gretna is a small Victorian community founded in the late 1800s as a summer resort. Initially, the only way for residents to reach their cottages in the woods was to travel by train. The streets in Mt. Gretna were footpaths until automobiles became the regular mode of travel.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Many of the original cottages surround the Mt. Gretna Playhouse, an open-air theater where numerous cultural events are held. The quaint atmosphere attracts many visitors every summer for music, theater, miniature golf, a walk in the woods, a ride on the rail-trail, a hike to Governor Dick (an observation tower on top of the mountain), a visit to the Jigger Shop (a local ice cream parlor), and the Art Show.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Live entertainment will be provided by Ken Gehret and Friends, Paul Colombo Group, <a id=\"OWA54ac2600-bdc1-a6f4-37bb-76aa61fbdd9e\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/wcupa.sharepoint.com\/:x:\/s\/WestChesterUniversity-DataModernizationTeam\/Ef_-UVl5vv1PkCecn0da8voB_VZUDtOgzbUksYPFPt68YA\">Andy<\/a> Roberts with Fragile Fire and Third Stream.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Proceeds from the Art Show are used to support cultural programs of the Pennsylvania Chautauqua and to maintain the Chautauqua\u2019s historic buildings and grounds. Media is sponsored in part by a grant from the Lebanon County Commissioners. The show also contributes substantially to the Mt. Gretna Volunteer Fire Company and funds a variety of community projects throughout Mt. Gretna.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Art Show has an admission charge of $15 for adults and is free for children under 12. The admission fee includes parking in designated parking locations. Please note that no pets are permitted on the Art Show grounds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Another popular event just a few miles from Mount Gretna is the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire (Mount Hope Estate and Winery grounds, Route 72, Cornwall, 717-665-7021, <a id=\"OWA01190d17-9a4e-ce54-0c97-144fbefb9ae5\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.parenfaire.com\/\">www.parenfaire.com<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This year\u2019s 45th annual staging of the event, which bills itself as \u201cthe most wondrous event in all the Knowne World\u201d, is running now through October 27.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The festive annual event features authentic Elizabethan food and drink, traditional crafts from the guildsmen of yore and old-time games of skill \u2014 and a cast of hundreds of colorfully costumed re-enactors.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Every summer, the Faire, which takes place at Mount Hope Estate and Winery\u2019s authentic 35-acre recreation of a 16th-century village in Olde England, features a new story from a different year of England\u2019s past. This year\u2019s Faire will take you back in time to the year 1558.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>More than 70 shows are scheduled throughout each day on the Faire\u2019s numerous stages.<\/div>\n<div>Without a doubt, the most popular attraction is the Jousting Arena. Visitors to the Faire flock to Bosworth Field whenever it\u2019s time for the Ultimate Joust. Peasants lead cheers for their favorite knights while musicians pound out a heart-thumping beat. The Master of the List announces the combatants and soon an encounter of royal proportions ensues.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Each weekend has a theme. On August 17 and 18, the theme is \u201cFairies and Fantasy.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The gates of the shire swing open wide welcoming your fellow travelers as well as travelers from the Fey realm\u2014Pixies, brownies, centaurs, fawns, Dungeon Masters and more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Faire offers a wide variety of activities for visitors, including listening to bagpipe music, checking out handsome Lords in their colorful silks, watching a jester\u2019s acrobatics, learning how to juggle, being the recipient of a gypsy woman\u2019s flirtations and watching the march of Beefeater Guards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Guildsmen\u2019s Way is the area that features a large variety of merchants and artisans, including jewelers, candle makers, potters, herbalists, leather smiths, clothiers, and pewter makers \u2014 all offering for sale and demonstrating their ancient wares.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And there are more than 20 Royal Kitchens located around the faire with menus featuring a wide variety of food and beverage.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Single-day tickets are available at the gate for $33.95. For children (age 5-11) single-day tickets are available at the gate and online for $17.95.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Schuylkill Banks Riverboat Tour (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schuylkillbanks.org\/events\/riverboat-tours-1\">www.schuylkillbanks.org\/events\/riverboat-tours-1<\/a>) presents \u201c<a id=\"OWAc08e2301-8bc3-9770-5146-4f9eed7e7c25\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schuylkillbanks.org\/events\/riverboat-tours-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Secrets of the Schuylkill<\/a>\u201d now through October.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The boat ride is a one-hour family-friendly tour of Philly\u2019s second biggest river featuring sights such as Bartram\u2019s Garden and Fairmount Water Works.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Riders can discover the Hidden River on a fun and educational riverboat tour while seeing spectacular views of Philadelphia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They can also learn about the past, present, and future of the tidal Schuylkill River and its impact on Philadelphia on a one-hour\u00a0Secrets of the Schuylkill\u00a0tour which costs $25 for adults and $15 for children (age 12 and under).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tours depart from the Walnut Street Dock, under the Walnut Street Bridge, east bank of the Schuylkill River.<\/div>\n<div>A Montgomery County Park with a special event this weekend is Pottsgrove Manor (100 West King Street, Pottstown,\u00a0610-326-4014, <a id=\"OWA36fa3914-3c0c-04d1-98d7-e039219aead6\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/montcopa.org\/index.aspx?nid=930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/montcopa.org\/index.aspx?nid=930<\/a>).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Every Saturday in August, Pottsgrove Manor is presenting \u201cOpen House Days.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Visitors can see something new every Saturday as Pottsgrove Manor highlights items from the collection and welcomes Living History activities throughout the day. They will be able to discover the ins-and-outs of 18th century items with the curator and learn about the trades and skills of the past with living history interpreters.<\/div>\n<div>Visitors can also find historic summer delights being created in the reproduction kitchen from period receipts.<\/div>\n<div>Pottsgrove Manor\u2019s staff and living history volunteers will demonstrate 18th-century trades, crafts, and pastimes. Many of the audience-friendly events are interactive. This event also features free admission.<\/div>\n<div>Hope Lodge (553 South Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington, 215-343-0965, <a id=\"OWA848d67ed-aa15-9a28-fa2e-4608286f0ace\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/hope\/\">http:\/\/www.ushistory.org\/hope\/<\/a>) will be presenting a \u201cGuided Mansion Tours\u201d on August 20.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hope Lodge was built between 1743 and 1748 by Samuel Morris, a prosperous Quaker entrepreneur. Morris acted as a farmer, shipowner, miller, iron master, shop owner, and owner of the mill now known as Mather Mill. Hope Lodge is an excellent example of early Georgian architecture, and it is possible that Edmund Woolley, architect of Independence Hall, offered advice in building.
