{"id":54418,"date":"2024-08-08T09:04:53","date_gmt":"2024-08-08T13:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=54418"},"modified":"2024-08-08T09:04:54","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T13:04:54","slug":"on-stage-wcu-student-ciara-grace-hits-stage-at-world-cafe-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=54418","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: WCU student, Ciara Grace hits stage at World Cafe Live"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_19766\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19766\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/ciara.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ciara Grace<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you look at some of the talented acts that will be playing in the area over the next few days, Cyndi Lauper\u2019s \u201cGirls Just Want to Have Fun\u201d might just pop into your head.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There are plenty of girls\/female artists who will be having fun along with their audiences at different venues around the Delaware Valley \u2013 Ciara Grace, Kelli Baker, Khadijah James, Lindsey Stirling and the three main female leads in \u201cMamma Mia!\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace will be headlining a show at the Lounge at World Caf\u00e9 Live (3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, <a id=\"OWA9e9b28c4-8567-208b-0604-04cab4ec54cc\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcafelive.com\/\">www.worldcafelive.com<\/a>) at a release party for her new album, \u201cWrite It Down\u201d on RedEye Worldwide.<\/div>\n<div>The World Caf\u00e9 Live describes her as \u201cthe next rising singer-songwriter to boast Philadelphia as her homebase.\u201d<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace has already performed at Liverpool\u2019s Philharmonic Music Room near the Mersey River, the Philadelphia Folk Festival in farm area outside Philly, and The Bitter End in Greenwich Village.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace is a singer\/songwriter who grew up in East Norriton, a \u201csuburb\u201d of Norristown, and now attends West Chester University.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI graduated from North Penn in 2021,\u201d said Grace, during a phone interview last week from her Montgomery County home. \u201cThen, I started at West Chester where I\u2019m a psychology major.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace may be majoring in psychology at school, but she is majoring in music in life.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Some singers attribute their musical skills to family \u2013 \u201cI grew up with music. My parents were music fans\u201d or environment \u2013 \u201cMy parents played albums all the time and I listened to them\u201d.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace\u2019s music pedigree includes heavy influences from both family and environment\u00a0\u2013 real influences.<\/div>\n<div>Her father is producer\/engineer Glenn Barratt, owner of MorningStar Studios in East Norriton.<\/div>\n<div>Her mother is acclaimed singer-songwriter Lizanne Knott.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe music gene is definitely there,\u201d said Grace. \u201cI can feel it. I feel it most when I\u2019m playing live or playing in my room.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The environment for Grace when she was growing up was MorningStar Studios.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>MorningStar Studios is a professional recording studio featuring an impressive array of production and recording services and top-class equipment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The list of MorningStar\u2019s clients includes Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, Grover Washington Jr., Bootsie\u00a0Barnes, Kevin Eubanks, Jill Scott, Marianne Faithful, The Crossing, Cherish The Ladies, Janis Ian, Christine Lavin, Brother Sun Reggie Harris, Greg Greenway, Craig Bickhardt, Melody Gardot, and, of course, Ciara Grace and Lizanne Knott.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to Grace, \u201cI was always running around, making friends with the musicians, pressing buttons I shouldn\u2019t have been touching. On another note, I was very fortunate growing up that I got to sit in on my mom making her albums.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI feel like I got the artist\u2019s perspective from her, and the engineer\u2019s perspective from my dad. By the time I got around to starting my debut, I was very familiar with the process and all the time and labor that goes into it.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Grace learned a lot about what making is all about before she finished her teen years.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy dad would teach me all about the studio,\u201d said Grace. \u201cHe was a music major in college. Being in the studio with him, I learned about engineering.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere were also times when he would have me singing on recordings that were being done there. I\u2019m all over my mom\u2019s records.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace\u2019s focus now is on \u201cWrite It Down,\u201d which was released on May 10, six days after her 21st birthday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI started working on the album right after COVID started,\u201d said Grace. \u201cI was working more on the music. I started to lay down some tracks. I got a feel for what I wanted my first album to sound like.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cEnglish class has always been my favorite. So, I wanted songs that built like a novel. And I wanted things that come from the heart.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI write on guitar and piano. I typically wait to record something until I have a finished product. I do a lot of self-questioning.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen I\u2019m writing songs, I don\u2019t fully know what they\u2019re about until they\u2019re done. There was definitely some soul searching. I relate to these songs.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace\u2019s songs are intense, honest, soulful and interesting. There are no forced rhymes or over-used cliches. Her voice is strong and smooth and always up to the task of delivering the songs\u2019 emotions.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy new songs are more about what I\u2019ve learned about myself,\u201d said Grace. \u201cThere\u2019s a song about my first long relationship.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere is a lot of family stuff. I have three sisters who are a lot older and I\u2019m now experiencing the same life events they did.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>What sets \u201cWrite It Down\u201d from a lot of albums by singer\/songwriters is the music \u2013 and the musicians. There are a lot of different instruments used on the album and the arrangements are ultra-tight.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Grace\u2019s band features a bunch of Philly\u2019s best musicians &#8212; Ross Bellenoit (guitar), Chico Huff (bass), Erik Johnson (drums) and John Conahan (keyboards).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Prior to the album, Grace and the gang recorded and released three singles \u2013 \u201cLost Cause\u201d on February 9, \u201cStalker on the Internet\u201d on March 15 and \u201cDon\u2019t Love Me Now\u201d on April 12.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m always writing new music,\u201d said Grace. \u201cRight now, I\u2019m trying to nail down production stuff for myself.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI love the old stuff and performing it in my live show. But I also like adding in new stuff.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The opening act for the show is Philadelphia\u2019s Gina Kaz.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Kaz is a singer\/songwriter\/pianist, author, and hospice music therapist. Her resonant tones remind you of the ladies who paved their way through the male dominated syncopated instrumental ingenious sounds of Be-Bop and Classical Jazz from as early as the 1950\u2032s.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If you close your eyes while listening to her, you may hear reminiscent echoes of Sarah, Ella, Billie, Nancy, Dinah and Gloria.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Khadijah\u00a0is a contralto whose range is deep and sweet at the same time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>She has been performing jazz since the late 80\u2032s in and around the Tri-State area. Khadijah\u00a0is always accompanied by the best musicians the area has to offer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Renee has been recorded live at the East Coast Jazz Festival now called the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Maryland and heard on WRTI 90.1 Jazz Radio.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Born and raised in Chester, Renee currently lives and works in Philadelphia, where the jazz audiences there accepted and adopted her as their own.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A former member of the Delaware Council of Jazz Advocates, she recently graced the stage of their tribute to Clifford Brown at the Delaware School of Music with a rendition of Sassy\u2019s \u201cSeptember Song.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Video link for Khadijah\u00a0Renee &#8212; <a id=\"OWA512bcee3-90e9-8764-246a-84bde78e1824\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" title=\"Protected by Outlook: https:\/\/youtu.be\/c74l3jLvyNQ. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/c74l3jLvyNQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/c74l3jLvyNQ<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show on Friday will start at 8 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This weekend\u2019s show will be another step in Baker\u2019s blossoming love affair with the Philadelphia area music scene &#8212; especially her fans at Jamey\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Prior to her date back in June, Baker discussed her affinity for the Delco club.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThis will be my third time to play Jamey\u2019s,\u201d said Baker, during a phone interview Tuesday from Huntington, Long Island while walking Yoshi, her 14-year-old Yorkshire Terrier.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe first time was back in November and there were less than 30 people there. The second time was March 16, and the show was sold out. This weekend\u2019s show had such a demand for tickets that they made it two shows.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Like many musicians, Baker has been making music since she was a kid.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been doing music my entire life,\u201d said Baker, who was\u00a0born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI sang in church choir with my mom. After that, I went to a Christian high school and was in a choral group there.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThen, I taught myself guitar. I took a few years and then I got into a rock band. I moved to New York in 2012. It was where I always hoped to be.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIn addition to making music, I was also running restaurants and clubs \u2013 including the Purple Elephant in New York. Before that, I was doing it in Arizona.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIn 2018, I began to focus mostly on music. I had an ah hah moment. When I started doing it again, I was mostly doing it myself \u2013fake it until I make it. It was mainly at the Bar Petite every Tuesday night.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Bar Petite is a cocktail bar in Huntington.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI got good at playing,\u201d said Baker. \u201cI also played at a lot of open mics with different musicians and that helped me learn a lot.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Baker also landed a residency gig at one of the most prestigious music clubs in Manhattan.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019ve been working in house at The Bitter End,\u201d said Baker, who recently signed as a Sony Music Artist under Bad Jeu Jeu Records.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI started playing there two years ago. I\u2019ve done a residency once a month for the last year.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Fans waiting for Baker\u2019s debut album will have to keep on waiting a little while longer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m doing it single by single,\u201d said Baker, the 2022 winner, Long Island Blues Challenge \u201cRoad to Memphis.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy most recent single, \u2018Gone Georgia, Gone,\u2019 came out on May 10.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI finished making my new album in March. It\u2019s all mixed and mastered. There will be at least 10 songs \u2013 mostly originals and a few interesting takes waiting for permission.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI\u2019m hoping that it will be released by the end of summer or early fall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt was recorded at VuDu Studios \u2013 Mike Watts\u2019 studio in Long Island. I produced the album myself.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Baker\u2019s band features guitar ace No\u00e9 Socha (Vernon Reid, Paula Cole), drummer Adan Wooten (son of Bela Fleck\u2019s bassist, Victor Wooten) and bassist PJ LaMariana (Oteil Burbridge, John Kadlecik) \u2013 along with Baker on guitar and vocals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy genre is blues but I\u2019m a rock girl at heart,\u201d said Baker. On the second Sunday of each month, the featured act is the Girke-Davis Project which features club owner Jamey Reilly, Roger Girke, Glenn Bickel, Fred Berman and Colgan-Davis.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Jamey\u2019s also has a new thing going on next week.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On August 14, the venue will host \u201cThe Fabulous Dueling Pianos.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Dueling Pianos features Tony T. (Anthony Decarolis) and Wildman Joe (Joe Marchetti), performing energetic sing along classics for all ages. Their entertaining style of interacting with the audience has everyone singing, clapping and partying along.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Dueling Pianos have been based out of the Philly area since March of 1990, when they started at Market Street Live in Center City Phila. Since then, they have performed at nightclubs, colleges, parties and corporate events throughout the East Coast, as far west as Anaheim, California and as far south as Biloxi, Mississippi.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show on August 14 will start at 8 p.m.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Tickets are $25\u00a0in advance and $35 at the door.\u00a0Livestream tickets are $15.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Lindsey Stirling will perform at The Met (858 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, <a id=\"OWAa813dbd8-6519-fb1c-3863-946bbb4c54b8\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"http:\/\/themetphilly.com\/\">http:\/\/themetphilly.com<\/a>) on August 14.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Stirling is an American violinist, songwriter, and dancer. The show has now been seen live on stage by 65 million people across the world and turned into two record-breaking movies \u2013\u00a0\u201cMAMMA MIA!\u00a0The Movie\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cMAMMA MIA!\u00a0Here We Go Again.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After \u201cMamma Mia!\u201d opened on Broadway in 2001, it played for a record-breaking 14 years, first at the Winter Garden Theatre, then at the Broadhurst Theatre.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show also toured North America from 2000-2017 with four different touring companies spanning this period.
