{"id":54370,"date":"2024-07-25T09:10:02","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T13:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=54370"},"modified":"2024-07-25T09:10:03","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T13:10:03","slug":"on-stage-almost-monday-brings-a-bit-of-california-to-philly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=54370","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: almost monday brings a bit of California to Philly"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_19730\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19730\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/almostmonday.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">almost monday<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When the Beach Boys released their debut album, \u201cSurfin\u2019 Safari,\u201d in 1962, it was the beginning of the California sound in rock music.<\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The band\u2019s music made listeners think of Southern California, days at the beach, riding in convertible, surfing and summer love.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Now, more than 60 years later there is another band from Southern California that captures the same kind of vibe \u2013 beautiful young people on lovely beaches, surfers and skateboarders, and<\/div>\n<div>Jeeps replacing woodies.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>That band is almost monday, a trio from the San Diego\u2019s North County that released its debut EP, \u201cdon\u2019t say you\u2019re ordinary,\u201d in October 2020.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The trio features Dawson Daugherty [vocals], Luke Fabry [bass], and Cole Clisby [guitar].<\/div>\n<div>On July 25, almost Monday returns to Philadelphia to perform at the Wells Fargo Center (<a id=\"OWA967a431b-a76b-f8b8-4e7f-caeca4c9f259\" class=\"OWAAutoLink\" href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=wells+fargo+center+3601+south+broad+st+philadelphia+pa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3601 South Broad St,\u00a0Philadelphia,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.livenation.com\/\">www.livenation.com<\/a>) as the opening act on AJR\u2019s national tour in support of their 2023 album, \u201cThe Maybe Man.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe\u2019ve been on tour since the end of June,\u201d said Clisby, during a phone interview Wednesday evening from his Philadelphia hotel room.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe have another one-and-one-half weeks left on the tour. It\u2019s been going really well. We\u2019ve gotten good reception from AJR\u2019s fans.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After countless garage jams, D.I.Y. gigs in the back of a surf shop, and innumerable hours writing together, the San Diego trio bottles California sunshine in its funky basslines, ecstatic choruses, and danceable grooves.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Their initial EP,\u00a0\u201cdon\u2019t say you\u2019re ordinary,\u201d produced with Mark Needham (The Killers, Fleetwood Mac)\u00a0and Simon Oscroft (The Naked and Famous, DREAMERS), quickly gained traction with hits like \u201cparking lot view\u201d and \u201ccome on come on.\u201d Their infectious energy and empowering anthems, notably \u201cbroken people,\u201d garnered attention.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 2021, almost monday continued to shine with their second EP,\u00a0\u201ctil the end of time,\u201d and singles like \u201clive forever\u201d and \u201ccool enough,\u201d earning acclaim from\u00a0Alternative Press,\u00a0Forbes,\u00a0People,\u00a0GQ Australia,\u00a0Earmilk,\u202fFlaunt,\u00a0Ones To Watch\u00a0and more.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe\u2019re putting out our debut album this fall,\u201d said Clisby. \u201cIt\u2019s done. We\u2019ve been releasing singles from it. We\u2019ve put three singles out so far this year and will have at least one more from the album.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing singles for a couple years now, so it just felt right to make an album. Our first single was \u2018broken people\u2019 in 2020.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe\u2019ve recorded 14-16 singles and there are very few that we haven\u2019t done videos for \u2013 or at least visualizers.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The single \u201cbroken people\u201d crystallized their sun-kissed signature style with a bold bass bounce and empowering refrain as it\u2019s generated nearly 32 million combined audio and video streams so far and cracked the Top 20 at Alternative Radio.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Southern California vibe is evident in the titles of the singles &#8212; \u201csunburn,\u201d \u201cparking lot view,\u201d \u201ccome on come on,\u201d \u201clive forever,\u201d \u201ccool enough,\u201d \u201csun keeps on shining,\u201d \u201conly wanna dance,\u201d \u201ccoast to coast, \u201clife goes by,\u201d and \u201csweet feelings.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cIt is about California, \u201csaid Clisby. \u201cWe\u2019re all from North County and we all surf.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cThere hasn\u2019t been one definite breakthrough for us. It\u2019s been a pretty slow burn from touring as lot.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>Fabry and Daugherty were longtime friends, and Daugherty met Clisby later through surfing. Daughtery and Fabry attended\u00a0Point Loma Nazarene University, and Clisby went to the\u00a0University of California, San Diego.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMe and Dawson grew up together,\u201d said Fabry. \u201cDawson met Cole and we decided to start a band. We started doing shows at a surf shop in San Diego.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Now, the trio is an accomplished band ready to unleash its first full-length.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe started recording the album last fall,\u201d said Clisby. \u201cAll of us went into the studio together. We did a span of sessions \u2013 three or four days at a time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe recorded it in L.A. with producer Simon Oscroft at his studio in Silver Lake \u2013 Baxter Movie Music. We met him five years ago and we\u2019ve worked together a lot since then.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen this tour finishes, we\u2019re going back home to finish rolling out the album. Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jameyshouseofmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.jameyshouseofmusic.com<\/a>) will host a show devoted to the American singer-songwriter, musician, actor, film producer, and boxer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hawkins\u2019 music has been brought back to life with Resurrection of Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins, an act that takes audiences back in time to the days when Hawkins\u2019 music screamed from the stage.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This project is comprised of extremely talented and seasoned musicians. Mike Armando was the original guitarist for Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins back in the 1970\u2019s.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The band is not just performing the music of Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins but creating a time machine of one of rock\u2019s true wild men.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Armando has been playing music since he was a young child. Ironically, he began on an instrument that was never associated with Hawkins\u2019 music.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI started off with accordion in the early 60s,\u201d said Armando, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Long Island, New York.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cMy mother loved music. She always wanted me to play music, so she got me an accordion. Then, I began listening to music and started playing guitar.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cI got into blues artists like Paul Butterfield, John Lee Hooker, Albert King and B.B. King. Then, I joined a blues band in the late \u201960\u2019s. and later spent several years in Hawkins\u2019 band.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hawkins had his own \u201cshtick\u201d &#8212; vocal dementia, a warped sense of humor, voodoo imagery and a stage show that went beyond the limits of rock theatricality.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One of Hawkins\u2019 trademark acts was entering the stage in a flaming coffin, wearing a black satin cape and a bone in his nose.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>At the same time, he would be holding a cane topped by the head of Henry, a flaming, cigarette-smoking skull. His act also featured a crawling hand, tarantulas, a shrunken head and snakes.<\/div>\n<div>His was a show that Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson could only dream of creating.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>However, Hawkins\u2019 stage show didn\u2019t always go as planned.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Armando was the guitarist for Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins during the 1970\u2019s. In 1976, Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins suffered facial injuries when he was burned by one of his flaming props while performing with Mike at the Virginia Theater in Alexandria, Virginia.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe were doing a show in Virginia and Screamin\u2019 Jay Hawkins blew himself up with a prop while playing \u2018Alligator Wine,\u2019\u201d said Armando.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cHe had a prop that would blow up when he stepped on it. It didn\u2019t work so he punched it, and it blew up in his face.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWhen they carried him off the stage, he yelled to me &#8212; \u2018keep on playing.\u2019 So, I played 20 more minutes of \u2018Alligator Wine\u2019 and then he came back.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 1956, Hawkins, whose birth name was Jalacy J. Hawkins, recorded the ballad, \u201cI Put a Spell on You,\u201d during a drunken night in the recording studio. The wild results of the session produced a major hit \u2013 even though it was banned by many radio stations for its moans and grunts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Over the past 60-plus years, \u201cI Put a Spell on You\u201d was recorded by a wide array of performers including Nina Simone (No. 23 on the U.S.\u00a0Billboard\u00a0R&amp;B chart\u00a0in 1965), Diamanda Galas, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bryan Ferry (No. 18 in 1993),\u00a0Annie Lennox, Sonique\u00a0(No. 8 in 2000), The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Alan Price, Marilyn Manson and Bonnie Tyler<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Jeff Beck, with vocals by\u00a0Joss Stone, covered the song on the album, \u201cEmotion &amp; Commotion,\u201d\u00a0in 2010. It was nominated for the\u00a0Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal\u00a0at the\u00a053rd Grammy Awards.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Over the years, Hawkins toured regularly in the United States and Europe and opened for the Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden in 1980 and inspired Keith Richards to produce a remake of \u201cI Put a Spell on You.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Hawkins was also known for his movie appearances including \u201cAmerican Hot Wax&#8217;\u201d in 1978, \u201cMystery Train\u201d in 1989 and \u201cA Rage in Harlem\u201d in 1991. Actually, it\u2019s a show about an iconic character \u2013 Fanny Brice \u2013 and a show that featured an iconic performer \u2013 Barbra Streisand.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Featuring one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, an updated book from Harvey\u00a0Fierstein\u00a0based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, tap choreography by Ayodele Casel, choreography by Ellenore Scott, and direction from Michael Mayer, this love letter to the theater is the real deal.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After debuting on Broadway in 1964,\u00a0\u201cFunny Girl\u201d\u00a0made its way to the big screen in 1968, with Barbra Streisand in the titular role, and became the highest grossing film in the U.S. that year.<\/div>\n<div>The national tour of the musical features Grammy\u00ae Award-winner Melissa Manchester (Mrs. Brice) and introducing rising star Katerina McCrimmon (Fanny Brice).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>McCrimmon is the hot new artist and Manchester is the accomplished veteran.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Manchester has been making widely acclaimed music for more than a half-century.<\/div>\n<div>The \u201cMidnight Blue\u201d singer received her first\u00a0Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance in 1979\u00a0for the Peter Allen\/Carole Bayer Sager-penned \u201cDon\u2019t Cry Out Loud,\u201d winning the Grammy in that category four years later for \u201cYou Should Hear How She Talks About You.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u201cFunny Girl\u201d\u00a0is a musical with score by\u00a0Jule Styne, lyrics by\u00a0Bob Merrill, and book by\u00a0Isobel Lennart, that first opened on Broadway in 1964. The semi-biographical plot is based on the life and career of comedian and Broadway star\u00a0Fanny Brice, featuring her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler\u00a0Nicky Arnstein.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Barbra Streisand\u00a0starred in the original Broadway musical, produced by Brice&#8217;s son-in-law\u00a0Ray Stark. The production received eight nominations at the\u00a018th Tony Awards. The\u00a0original cast recording of\u00a0\u201cFunny Girl\u201d\u00a0was inducted into the\u00a0Grammy Hall of Fame\u00a0in 2004.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The sensational Broadway revival dazzles with one of the most celebrated musical scores of all time, including classic songs \u201cDon\u2019t Rain on my Parade,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m the Greatest Star,\u201d and \u201cPeople.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cFunny Girl\u201d\u00a0is directed by Tony\u00ae Award winner Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and features the classic score by Tony\u00ae, Grammy\u00ae, and Academy\u00ae Award winner Jule Styne and lyrics by Tony\u00ae Award nominee and Grammy\u00ae Award winner Bob Merrill, with additional songs from Styne &amp; Merrill. The show will close on August 24.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Fantasticks\u201d is a magical journey, part fairy tale, part fable and entirely enchanting. With book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, it features such memorable songs as \u201cTry to Remember\u201d and \u201cSoon It\u2019s Gonna Rain\u201d and has the distinction of being the longest-running musical in the history of theater.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Fantasticks\u201d\u00a0is a 1960\u00a0musical\u00a0with music by\u00a0Harvey Schmidt\u00a0and book and lyrics by\u00a0Tom Jones. It tells an\u00a0allegorical\u00a0story, loosely based on the 1894 play\u00a0\u201cThe Romancers\u201d\u00a0(\u201cLes Romanesques\u201d) by\u00a0Edmond Rostand, concerning two neighboring fathers who trick their children, Luisa and Matt, into falling in love by pretending to feud.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The show\u2019s original\u00a0off-Broadway\u00a0production ran a total of 42 years (until 2002) and 17,162 performances, making it the world\u2019s longest-running musical. The musical was produced by\u00a0Lore Noto. It was awarded\u00a0Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre\u00a0in 1991.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The poetic book and breezy, inventive score, including such memorable songs as \u201cTry to Remember,\u201d helped make the show durable. Many productions followed, as well as television and film versions.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Fantasticks\u201d was revived Off-Broadway from 2006-2017.
