Caln Police arrested a local student following a threat \u2014 which the student later claimed to be a joke \u2014 of a school shooting in the Coatesville Area School District, Thursday.<\/p>\n

The threat led to an early dismissal of schools in favor of remote learning as local police worked to assess the threat.<\/p>\n

It started at <\/span>7 a.m., when Caln Police Department was <\/span>made aware of a tip<\/span> that <\/span>was submitted to <\/span>a tip line <\/span>at a neighboring police <\/span>agency regarding a threatening <\/span>post on social media regarding an intended shooting incident at an unspecified <\/span>Coatesville Area School District<\/span> building.<\/span><\/p>\n

The post included<\/span> what police described as a racially<\/span> motivated<\/span> undertone.<\/span> Members of the Caln Police <\/span>Criminal Investigat<\/span>ion <\/span>Unit immedi<\/span>a<\/span>tely <\/span>coordinated with the <\/span>Coatesville Area School Di<\/span>s<\/span>trict <\/span>Police Department. By 5:00 p.m. that day, <\/span>Caln Police investigators were <\/span>able to<\/span> identify the <\/span>source of the post, <\/span>who was identified <\/span>as a teena<\/span>ge <\/span>(juvenile) CASO student. The <\/span>st<\/span>udent<\/span> admitted to<\/span> creating the<\/span> post and reportedly told inve<\/span>s<\/span>tigator<\/span>s <\/span>it<\/span> was intended as a “joke.” The student is<\/span> being<\/span> charged criminally.<\/p>\n

Caln police added this note to the statement issued Friday:<\/p>\n

“The Caln Police Department takes this <\/span>opportunity to<\/span> remind the\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>community of the\u00a0 <\/span>importan<\/span>ce<\/span> of responsible use <\/span>of social media by all users, adult a<\/span>nd <\/span>children alike. Parents are s<\/span>tron<\/span>g<\/span>ly<\/span> encouraged to use <\/span>this as <\/span>a teaching moment <\/span>with their <\/span>children.<\/p>\n

“Threats, especially tho<\/span>se<\/span> directed toward <\/span>schools, will never be treated lightly, <\/span>or as a “joke” by law <\/span>enforcement. If<\/span> you see concerning posts, s<\/span>uch<\/span> as in this case of sc<\/span>hool violence,<\/span> plea<\/span>se <\/span>preserve th<\/span>e <\/span>image or text<\/span> and notify<\/span> authorities right<\/span> away in<\/span> lieu of<\/span> re–<\/span>posting on social media<\/span> outlets. Avenues to<\/span> make prompt reports to<\/span> authorities would be to<\/span> call 911 or to<\/span> make a report to the <\/span>Safe2Say platform which is monitored<\/span> 24\/7. Police departmental tip line<\/span>s <\/span>are often not<\/span> monitor<\/span>ed 24\/7 <\/span>and are int<\/span>e<\/span>nd<\/span>ed <\/span>for <\/span>tip<\/span>s <\/span>regarding <\/span>c<\/span>riminal <\/span>act<\/span>ivity that does not <\/span>entail an imminent threat to<\/span> community safety.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
