{"id":48897,"date":"2021-09-08T15:27:10","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T19:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=48897"},"modified":"2021-09-08T15:27:12","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T19:27:12","slug":"county-sets-up-center-to-help-flood-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=48897","title":{"rendered":"County sets up center to help flood victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <em>Editor, The Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikemcgannpa\">@mikemcgannpa<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14519\" style=\"width: 297px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_6146.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14519\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_6146-287x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flood victims line up outside of United Sports Wednesday waiting to meet up with county resources and community group to get help following Hurricane Ida.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">DOWNINGTOWN \u2014 If you\u2019ve been flooded out of your home, or suffered serious damage, Chester County officials are there for you and have set up an emergency center to find you the help you need now and help to rebuild later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The center opened Wednesday at noon and will remain open until 7 p.m. at the United Sports Training Center (1426 Marshallton Thorndale Road) and will be open again Thursday, noon to 7 p.m. If you cannot attend in person, you can go to the Website <a href=\"http:\/\/chesco.org\/ida\"><span class=\"s1\">chesco.org\/ida<\/span><\/a> to get much of the same information and register.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is important for victims of Ida-related flooding to register \u2014 both to get immediate help with housing and food in the short term, but to begin the process to get into the FEMA and PEMA \u2014 the federal and state respectively emergency management administrations to be able to long-term assistance to rebuild or find a new home. Many county residents have been left homeless, others without power \u2014 and need immediate housing and food assistance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">County officials said they wanted to get as many people as much help as possible \u2014 and thanked United Sports for offering the facility for two days, which allowed various government and community entities to create a \u201cone-stop\u201d solution for those in need.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">County Commissioners Chair Marian Moskowitz praised the residents of the county \u2014 noting how quick they have been to offer assistance to their neighbors, whether it be donating needed items or jumping to help remove ruined debris, calling it an \u201cincredible sight\u201d \u2014 despite the ongoing COVID crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWith all we\u2019ve been through that last two years, people are still stepping up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And while more than 30 county and local organizations were on hand \u2014 and will be again Thursday \u2014 those are primary there to help with immediate needs. In the long term, officials said, it is going to take state and federal help to restore and rebuild what was lost in the historic flooding of last week.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14520\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_6133.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14520\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/IMG_6133-326x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chester County Commissioners Chair Marian Moskowitz addresses relief efforts for Ida, Thursday.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThis is the most significant flooding event we\u2019ve had in my life time,\u201d said Commissioner Josh Maxwell, the former mayor of Downingtown, just one location that was hit particularly hard by the flooding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And while Coatesville, Downingtown and Caln got early attention for the flooding, it became clear that many other areas from West Grove to Oxford (which was hit by an EF-2 tornado, causing damage in the area where it hit), there were flooding issues in almost any part of the county near a river or creek \u2014 which is to say much of the county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cNot one corner of our county was left unscathed,\u201d Commissioner Michelle Kichline said. \u201cAnd some of our neediest citizens have been displaced from their homes. We walked through our communities and saw mud on floors, personal belongings on streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While there are resources for immediate need, it will likely be up to the state government \u2014 the legislature and Gov. Tom Wolf \u2014 to provide funding. Wolf toured some of the hardest hit portions of the county this past week. There is a state emergency declaration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">President Joe Biden already declared a federal emergency for New York and New Jersey, but not for Pennsylvania as of this writing, although data continues to be collected for that potential declaration.
