{"id":45380,"date":"2020-04-02T15:40:25","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T19:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=45380"},"modified":"2020-04-02T15:40:27","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T19:40:27","slug":"covid-19-update-april-2-cases-spike-statewide-locally-two-deaths-reported-in-chesco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=45380","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Update, April 2: Cases spike statewide, locally; two deaths reported in Chesco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <em>Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11432\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CV19Map-A2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11432\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CV19Map-A2-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The official map of COVID-19 cases in Chester County as provided by the Chester County Health Department on April 2.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Case numbers of COVID-19 spiked sharply both statewide and in Chester County yesterday \u2014 with the report of two more deaths in the county on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Statewide, the state Department of Health jumped by 1,211 to a total of 7,016 with 16 new deaths, bringing the statewide total to 90 from COVID-19. 47,698 patients have tested negative so far statewide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe continued rise in cases combined with our increasing deaths from COVID-19 reflects the seriousness of this situation,\u201d Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. \u201cWe need everyone to listen to the orders in place and to stay calm, stay home and stay safe. We know that these prolonged mitigation effects have been difficult for everyone, but it is essential that everyone follows these orders and does not go out unless they absolutely must.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The entire state is now under a Stay At Home order &#8211; with non \u201clife-sustaining\u201d businesses and all schools ordered closed.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In Chester County, of the two death recorded in county, one was an 87-year-old man, a resident of Montgomery County, who died at a county hospital. A 79-year-old man from Honey Brook was yesterday\u2019s other victim to the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Overall, the Chester County Department of Health reports 207 positive tests, up 25 in a day, with 1,763 negative tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Responding to these additional deaths, Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline said,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cOn behalf of the whole Chester County community, we express our deepest sympathies to families of these two individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe death of both of these men reinforces the fact that older people with chronic health issues are the most susceptible to this virus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Right now, social distancing is the most practical \u2018cure\u2019 that we have to beat COVID-19, so we implore everyone to stay at home \u2013 for the sake of the elderly and for the sake of everyone.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">County officials talked about how difficult the pandemic is for county residents \u2014 but also how important it is for residents to honor the Stay At Home orders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a very stressful situation for everyone, but especially the families who lose someone to this dreadful disease,\u201d Chester County Coroner Dr. Christina VandePol said.\u00a0\u201cWe are in close communication with Chester County hospital staff and funeral homes as COVID-19 deaths are reported. \u00a0As the Commissioners said, everyone must continue to stay home. It IS making a difference and will prevent deaths.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For more information, Chester County has a source for all information relating to coronavirus, including a dashboard that provides geographic and demographic information on all reported cases in the county, can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chesco.org\/coronavirus\"><span class=\"s2\">www.chesco.org\/coronavirus<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Meanwhile, state officials continue to make moves and rules adjustments in light of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday that in an effort to conserve personal protective equipment (PPE) for human healthcare workers, the Pennsylvania Dog Law that requires shelters and rescues to spay\/neuter dogs and cats prior to adoption would be waived for pets adopted during active COVID-19 mitigation efforts in Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis waiver is not something we take lightly; but it\u2019s a matter of weighing the costs,\u201d said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding. \u201cWaiving the requirement to spay or neuter prior to adoption allows us to conserve critical PPE supplies and also limit the risk of exposure for veterinarians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net\/ls\/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUdYbNClJljiEld-2Fmi3PX2cm0RmPgF9-2F-2FnWLtrBvs-2B79JzZAb2c48ZpPPi3KnIIZMUd79o-2FHHrKu8niVyZmrOk64-3DlpHx_mdytbyizDIdVO1JQUbUtCdqlyH-2BJbozCn6jC8ZxgCMXyOrUEgyrdOngqlLIuqyYB3o-2FNidNq3zAwWRkFjravVUgqXx6YtDQU-2BHpPbAr-2F5T8NDbgWuEveoxwV4sdzseJb-2FLVDYVH7KeWDwH3UP2GTRo9zK-2BpVnrscTBR9q8bQYaV7hTggrCBOEI5-2BSNW7zNW6F6iWsz8llCaAWRLZRS-2Fg-2FzZw19-2FT5vuoQce-2BQbBEbqrSsGo-2BMyfXBjJEChw-2F-2FRgGPMKuE2O2gu-2BlKPUgPE6u9VRkBtUaASBvaEOzcZDUZ-2FkevQfvwCLJJmNFcPZr22jQRiEeszPTv86En1euL6nzLTEttXz-2Boi83UY3XDf0BhmY-3D\"><span class=\"s3\">waiver<\/span><\/a> comes with a contingency: shelters must keep a list of adopters to follow up with post-pandemic and provide a copy of all contracts to the Department of Agriculture\u2019s Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement. Once the pandemic is in the past, shelters would be required to follow up on all pets adopted during COVID-19 mitigation.
