Not only are they extremely familiar with the Dead\u2019s best-known songs, they know every song in the Dead\u2019s catalog. There are no deep cuts or hidden gems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Waynard Scheller, a musician from North Jersey, is a diehard Deadhead. He is also the leader of Rainbow Full of Sound, one of the country\u2019s favorite Jerry Garcia\/Grateful Dead tribute bands.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cMy first Dead show was at the Spectrum in Philly in 1978,\u201d said Scheller, during a recent phone interview from his home in Monmouth County, New Jersey. \u201cI followed the Dead around the country. I saw Jerry and the Dead play more than 300 times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Now, Rainbow Full of Sound is embarking on a tour that will retrace the Grateful Dead\u2019s most extraordinary tour &#8212; \u201cEurope 72.\u201d \u00a0The tour will launch on February 6 at 118 North (118 North Wayne Avenue, Wayne, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.118northwayne.com\/\">www.118northwayne.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The tour will return to 118 North on March 5, April 2, and May 7. It will also play four shows at the 8&#215;10 in Baltimore, Maryland and Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs, New York, and two at Hill Country Live in New York City. It also will have one-night stops at three venues in New York \u2013 Garcia\u2019s The Cap in Port Chester, Funk &#8216;n Waffles in Syracuse and The Colony in Woodstock \u2013 and four in New Jersey &#8212; Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, The Stanhope House in Stanhope, Donovan\u2019s Reef in Sea Bright, and Hard Rock Cafe in Atlantic City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to follow the Dead\u2019s itinerary from their European tour in 1972,\u201d said Scheller. \u201cWe\u2019re doing then in order chronologically and playing the exact set list from each show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cI decided to do this a year ago. We\u2019re doing 21 shows &#8212; same as \u2018Europe 1972.\u2019 The shows are mostly in New Jersey with a little in New York and a little in New Jersey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">In addition to the shows at 118 North, the tour will feature <\/span><span lang=\"EL\">four shows at The 8&#215;10 in Baltimore, Maryland and Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs, New York, and two at Hill Country Live in New York City. It also will have one-night stops at three venues in New York \u2013 Garcia\u2019s The Cap in Port Chester, Funk \u2018n Waffles in Syracuse and The Colony in Woodstock \u2013 and four in New Jersey &#8212; Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, The Stanhope House in Stanhope, Donovan\u2019s Reef in Sea Bright, and Hard Rock Cafe in Atlantic City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cOn this tour, we\u2019ll have a total of 18 musicians,\u201d said Scheller, who <\/span><span lang=\"EL\">has shared the stage with Bob Weir (Grateful Dead, Rat Dog Dead and Co) Donna Jean Godchaux (Grateful Dead, Donna &amp; The Tricksters), John Kadlecik (Dark Star Orchestra, Phil and Friends, Further. Mark Karan (The Other Ones, Bob Weir &amp; RatDog) Kenny Brooks, (Bob Weir, RatDog, Charlie Hunter Quartet).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cIt\u2019s a revolving cast with six member each night. We\u2019ll have the same bass player for 19 of the shows but I\u2019m the only constant. Most of the shows are three-and-one-half hours of music with a half-hour break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cWe\u2019re staying faithful to the set lists and paying tribute to the band but we\u2019re not trying to play the Dead\u2019s music note-for-note. We kind of let it flow and it comes out like us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Scheller has had his Dead tribute act <\/span>together <span lang=\"EL\">for eight years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cThe band started in 2012 with a residency at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park,\u201d said Scheller. \u201cIt just evolved from there as a six-piece jam band playing Dead music exclusively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Video link for Rainbow Full of Sound &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/DRkbr7ftYfg\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/DRkbr7ftYfg<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The show at 118 North will start at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Other upcoming shows at 118 North are <\/span><span lang=\"EL\">West Philadelphia Orchestra on February 7, Trevor Street Band on February 8 and Under the Oak on February 9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">A trip to <\/span>Delaware<span lang=\"EL\">, this <\/span>month<span lang=\"EL\"> could also be a trip to Berlin \u2013 to Berlin in 1931 when the Nazis were first rising to power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">That\u2019s because The Candlelight Theatre (2208 Millers Road, Arden, Delaware,<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.candlelighttheatredelaware.com\/\">www.candlelighttheatredelaware.com<\/a><span lang=\"EN\">) is presenting <\/span>the classic musical <span lang=\"EN\">\u201cCabaret<\/span>\u201d now through February 23.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cCabaret\u201d has a storied history. The hit musical has won a Tony Award for Best Musical, a Tony Award for Best Original Score and a Tony Award for Best Musical Revival.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Set <span lang=\"EL\">in the infamous Kit Kat Klub, the show features some of the most well-known songs in theater history \u2013 songs such as \u201cCabaret,\u201d \u201cMaybe This Time\u201d and \u201cWillkommen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11105\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/www_mackenzie-newbury.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11105\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11105\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/www_mackenzie-newbury-350x234.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11105\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mackenzie Newbury in Cabaret<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The Kit Kat Klub featured Sally Bowles, the Emcee, and a rousing ensemble known as the Kit Kat Klub Band. Their invitation to audiences was to come to the Cabaret and leave their troubles outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The story focuses on Cliff Bradshaw, a young writer from America, and his relationship with the English cabaret performer Sally Bowles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fr\u00e4ulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor.<\/p>\n<p>The Kit Kat Klub and its activities serve as a metaphor for the gloom-portending political scene in Weimar Germany in the early 1930s. <span lang=\"EN\">The show demonstrates how people just wanted to have a good time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">\u201cCabaret\u201d premiered on Broadway in 1966 and won eight Tony Awards including Best Musical as well as the New York Drama Critics\u2019 Circle Award and the Outer Critics\u2019 Circle Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The initial revival of \u201cCabaret\u201d first opened on Broadway in 1998 and won four Tony Awards \u2014 including Best Revival of a Musical. It ran on Broadway for six years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The show returned to Broadway at Studio 54 in March 2014, with Alan Cumming reprising his Tony-winning role as the Emcee. It played 423 performances through March 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The role of Sally Bowles in the play is an eclectic role that has been performed by many top-flight actresses \u2013 including Jill Haworth, Brooke Shields, Natasha Richardson and Michelle Williams.<\/span> <span lang=\"EL\">In the <\/span>Candlelight Theatre production<span lang=\"EL\">, <\/span>the iconic role<span lang=\"EL\"> is played by <\/span>Mackenzie Newbury.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">Actors playing the other major roles are <\/span>Dan Dunn <span lang=\"EL\">(<\/span>Emcee<span lang=\"EL\">), <\/span>Max Redman<span lang=\"EL\">\u00a0(Clifford Bradshaw), <\/span>Sam Nagel<span lang=\"EL\"> (Ernst Ludwig), <\/span>Edward Emmi<span lang=\"EL\"> (Herr Schultz)<\/span>, Donna Dougherty<span lang=\"EL\"> (Fr\u00e4ulein Schneider)<\/span> and Sophie Jones (<span lang=\"EL\">Fr\u00e4ulein <\/span>Kost). Jones recently performed in West Chester as Cinderella in the Resident Theatre Company\u2019s \u201cInto the Woods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newbury <span lang=\"EL\">is a self-proclaimed <\/span>\u201c<span lang=\"EL\">actress, singer, tapper and face kicker.<\/span>\u201d<span lang=\"EL\">The oldest of four girls, her love of musical theatre came from dance classes\u00a0at the local community center, singing in church choir, and watching the old MGM musicals with her mother and grandmother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After graduating from Boiling Springs High School in central Pennsylvania, she earned a Bachelor in Music in Musical Theater degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Ironically, Newbury <span lang=\"EL\">studied classical and contemporary musical theatre voice with Doug Bowles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Cabaret\u2019 is my favorite show,\u201d said Newbury, during a phone interview Wednesday evening from her home in South Philadelphia. \u201cI was in a community theater production of \u2018Cabaret\u2019 when I was 16. This is my first repeat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my first show here. I had heard that the people at Candlelight are great \u2013 and the food is great. I auditioned for the production in early October and we started rehearsals in early December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to play Sally Bowles. It\u2019s one of my top two desired roles along with Millie in \u2018Thoroughly Modern Millie.\u2019 I\u2019m equity eligible but I don\u2019t think I\u2019m going to do that right now. I want to perform the roles I want to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things I like about \u2018Cabaret\u2019 is the history. I\u2019ve always been a history fan. With \u2018Cabaret,\u2019 it\u2019s funny and then it gets real heavy, real fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newbury carries a lot of responsibility with bringing Sally Bowles to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaying the role of Sally is exhausting,\u201d said Newbury. \u201cI get to do a lot of big emotional ballads and there is a lot of good dramatic work to sink my teeth into. I like that every couple lines, I\u2019m playing a new character because of her mood swings. It\u2019s definitely a dramatic challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCabaret\u201d is an enduring success \u2013 drawing patrons to the theater for more than 50 years. People relate to each of the characters. The music is beautiful, and the script is so well-written.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Cabaret\u2019 has entertainment value,\u201d said Newbury. \u201cIt has dramatic punch and memorable songs. And the choreography is great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EL\">The Candlelight Theatre is presenting \u201cCabaret\u201d now through February 23.
