Click or tap to follow the link.\" href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bootandsaddlephilly.com&amp;data=02%7C01%7C%7C900d15ce1fda4d317fde08d79fc67c0b%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637153547141865462&amp;sdata=X88zIraHsYec93IdirQbZQ04WWePkYrhM7pMZKqJaKg%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.bootandsaddlephilly.com<\/a>), is a Philadelphia band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The trio, which features Joe Haller, Paul Impellizeri and Josh Pannepacker, is a Philadelphia-based band but not a band with its roots in Philly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe moved from Connecticut to Philly a few years ago,\u201d said Haller, during a phone interview Monday afternoon from his home in Philadelphia\u2019s Fairmount section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe knew we had to get out of Connecticut. There\u2019s now a whole lot going on culturally there. We had friends in Philly. New York was too crazy for us, so we came here.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cheerleader began in 2011 as an apartment-based recording project for friends Joseph Haller and Chris Duran. After a series of well-received Bandcamp singles and EPs, they became a five-piece band, toured the U.S. and U.K., and released their debut album, \u201cThe Sunshine of Your Youth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI formed the band with Chris Duran,\u201d said Haller. \u201cWe were childhood friends and went to high school together at Canton High in Connecticut. We always had a musical connection, so we decided to form a band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">But things didn\u2019t go quite as expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">According to Haller, \u201cToward the end of 2016 &#8212; right before the holidays &#8212; I had a call with the band, management, and our label and told them I was done. I had hit a wall, just physically and mentally exhausted, and I was at a point where I could not continue to tour. And even if I could, I was not in a state where I would have been able to do the songs from \u2018Sunshine\u2019 any justice.\u201d<br \/>\nHaller hung up thinking that was it\u2014and it was, in a sense. What Haller just didn\u2019t realize at the time is that it would lay the groundwork for a new chapter for the band and their eventual rebirth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">After five months of inactivity, Haller began recording demos that pushed into dramatically new terrain &#8212; songs that were unsparingly honest and even bleak at times, in stark contrast to the innocent exuberance that characterized his earlier work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cA lot has happened since the band formed in 2011 &#8211; people grow, people change, and priorities shift. It was in everyone\u2019s best interest that we go our separate ways. Chris left a couple years ago, got married and had a kid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cheerleader moved forward as a trio with Impellizeri, Pannepacker and Haller.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe trio settled in a little over a year ago,\u201d said Haller. \u201cPaul and Josh are dedicated musicians. I found them through my manager and auditions. We also have a drummer &#8212; Sean Donaghy \u2013 who recorded the album with us and plays with us in local gigs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The album is Cheerleader\u2019s sophomore LP, \u201cAlmost Forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded the album in summer 2018 and finished mixing it in January 2019,\u201d said Haller. \u201cIt\u2019s been waiting in limbo for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt will be released next month on Bright Antenna Records. They wanted music videos for songs. It\u2019s a singles-driven world. So, we released the first single from the album \u2013 \u2018Bang Bang\u2019 \u2013 in May 2019. The second one \u2013 \u2018Chimera\u2019 \u2013 came out in the summer and the third \u2013 \u2018Everyone\u2019s Wearing Skin\u2019 \u2013 just came out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded the album in two different locations with producer Chris Coady. We spent two weeks in the San Francisco area at Panoramic Studio in Marin County and then four or five weeks at Sunset Sound in L.A.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe did all the bass and drums live. We recorded a lot of the stuff with analog gear. Chris Coady is a big analog head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cheerleader\u2019s sophomore disc is very different than its debut album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe were pretty obsessed with pop production technique when we started out,\u201d said Haller. \u201cWe wanted to be a pop band. Then, we realized it wasn\u2019t what we listened to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOur music has gotten a little more psychedelic over the years \u2013 more spacey. It has more of a classic rock influence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The album will officially be released on February 7 via Bright Antenna.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m so happy the album is finally coming out,\u201d said Haller. \u201cIt\u2019s been frustrating to have to wait so long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Video link for Cheerleader &#8212; <a title=\"Protected by Outlook: https:\/\/youtu.be\/XqaBiFnPtjA. The band\u2019s new drummer arrived two weeks prior to the album\u2019s release. Prior to that, the Moon Hooch line-up featured Mike Wilbur (horns), Wenzl McGowen (horns) and James Muschler (drums).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOur new drummer is Ethan Snyder,\u201d said Wilbur, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from his home in New Bedford, Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThis is our first tour with him. He just joined about a month ago. James, Wenzl and I had been together for about 10 years, but James recently decided the road wasn\u2019t right for him. Ethan and I have been playing together for about 12 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">With the nucleus of Wilbur and McGowen, Moon Hooch has released four albums \u2013\u201cMoon Hooch\u201d (Hornblow\/<a title=\"Palmetto Records\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palmetto_Records\">Palmetto<\/a>, 2013), \u201cThis Is Cave Music\u201d (Hornblow\/Palmetto, 2014), \u201cRed Sky\u201d (Hornblow\/Palmetto, 2016) and the new one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Saxophone players McGowen, who is from the Canary Islands, and Wilbur, a Bostonian, and drummer Muschler, a Cleveland native, met in 2009 when they were in school at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan.\u00a0But they didn\u2019t start playing together until the summer of 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In 2013, the three New School grads took their jazz jobs and merged them with house and dubstep beats to create a maniacal dance hybrid they call \u201cCave Music.\u201d By the time they cut \u201cRed Sky,\u201d they were mixing elements of indie rock, virtuosic jazz and pulse-pounding electronic dance music with a DIY spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Recorded in a series of stunning, single-take performances, \u201cLife on Other Planets\u201d may be the purest distillation yet of the double saxophone and drum trio\u2019s sound. The nine tracks on \u201cLife on Other Planets\u201d mix elements of jazz, punk, funk, and EDM to create the latest chapter in \u201cCave Music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">When they initially headed into the studio in Winooski, Vermont, the three veteran musicians planned on creating a heavily produced and composed collection more along the lines of their previous full-length album, \u201cRed Sky.\u201d Instead, they recorded everything live over the course of a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe made the album in May 2019,\u201d said Wilbur. \u201cWe had Dan Rome produce it and we cut it at his home studio near Burlington, Vermont. We recorded all the tracks live \u2013 one take and all to tape. Dan really worked a lot on the mixing. He spent a lot of time getting it as close to perfection as he could.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe decided to use some improvisational sections of our sets that hadn\u2019t been recorded before. We went in with a skeleton for the song. There is a form that we were improvising in live shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen we were recording, the form remained the same \u2013 same key, same tempo, same length of time. But the improvisation was different. Those earlier tracks are definitely pretty open. When we play live, we take a lot of chances. We\u2019re all jazz musicians and we like to stretch it out.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The band had such a deep relationship with the songs that one take was all they needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">According to Wilbur, \u201cWhen we got to the studio, we just felt inspired to record these live pieces we\u2019d been performing for so long. Solange was performing a song called \u2018Mad\u2019 and started to increasingly appear physically and emotionally distressed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAs I was watching this almost ritualistic shedding of pain, I started to think about what I and Black Americans have the right to be mad about and I started to think more and more about the senseless killings of Black men and women across our country. \u2018A Mother\u2019s Rite\u2019 is choreographed to illustrate a side of the story that is often kept very private, one that the public is not often exposed to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Museum is offering \u201cA Mother\u2019s Rite\u201d in conjunction with its participation in One Village Alliance\u2019s \u201cRaising Kings 2020,\u201d a week of events through January 25 around Wilmington that are focused on empowering young Black men and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">During the first half of the public performance on January 23, ensembles of local dancers from both Pieces of a Dream, Inc. and the Christina Cultural Arts Center will perform.
