Wilkes and Dom Flemons as the opening acts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Big Damn Blues Revolution Tour\u00a0brings together three amazing artists who are master musicians and showmen.\u00a0The Reverend Peyton, Dom Flemons,\u00a0and\u00a0J.D. Wilkes\u00a0also have a special bond in the blues-roots-folk music that they love and live. This unique tour showcases the best their genres have to offer and culminates every night in a special jam session with all three artists.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThis tour is just a couple days old and it\u2019s going really well,\u201d said Peyton, during a recent phone interview from a tour stop in Raleigh, North Carolina. \u201cWe\u2019ll be out the whole month of November.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u00a0The Reverend Peyton\u2019s Big Damn Band, a 2019 Blues Music Award nominee, is billed as \u201csimply the greatest country-blues band in the world.\u201d The trio, which includes the Reverend\u2019s wife \u201cWashboard\u201d Breezy Peyton and drummer Max Senteney, is led by the Reverend Peyton, who most consider to be the premier fingerpicker playing today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">He is both a singularly compelling performer and a persuasive evangelist for the rootsy, country blues styles that captured his imagination early in life and inspired him and his band to make pilgrimages to Clarksdale, Mississippi to study under such blues masters as T-Model Ford, Robert Belfour, and David \u201cHoneyboy\u201d Edwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe challenge of making the blues is that it takes work,\u201d said Peyton. \u201cIn terms of writing, the first thing you have to do is study \u2013 put in the time to see where this stuff comes from. Then, you have to write for yourself. It has to be personal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Big Damn Band is back with an explosive new record and world tour. Reverend Peyton\u2019s guitar work on the release,\u00a0\u201cPoor Until Payday,\u201d\u00a0howls the blues and is phenomenal.\u00a0\u201cPoor Until Payday\u201d\u00a0debuted at #1 on the iTunes Blues Chart and #4 on the Billboard Blues Chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe new album is my ninth album,\u201d said Peyton. \u201cI\u2019m always working on stuff. I have songs on the new record that came out real fast right before the record. Others I\u2019ve been working on a long time \u2013 taking a while to morph into a song. I hammer them out and chisel them into a song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI like to create new music that is timeless. I like to write songs that are new but sound like they\u2019re old. Blues should be timeless \u2013 and stand the test of time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peyton<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> has been travelling his musical path for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve been playing music since I was 12,\u201d said <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Peyton<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">, during a recent phone interview. \u201cI played a lot of music and gave lessons. When I was 18, I was told by a doctor that I\u2019d never be able to play again because I had issues with tendons in my hands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Doctors told Peyton that he would never be able to hold his left hand in fretting position again. At that point, he gave up on music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cTwo years later, I found a doctor who would operate,\u201d said Peyton. \u201cThey had to cut away a bunch of scar tissue &#8212; in both hands. It was a miracle. Then, I met Breezy and the rest is history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Not long after the surgery, he met Breezy and the couple\u2019s whirlwind romance and shared love of music inspired him to pursue his potential. Breezy took up the washboard, and by 2006 the members of the Rev. Peyton\u2019s Big Damn Band had sold their possessions and taken to the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe timing was perfect,\u201d said Peyton. \u201cI was in a pretty dark place because I had played guitar since I was a kid. It\u2019s who I was. When I met Breezy, my hands were still in bandages. Two weeks later, I was playing guitar again. Breezy believed in the music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI first started listening to anything &#8212; classic rock then blues guys like Johnny Winter. I wanted to know who they listened to and through that I discovered guys like Muddy Waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWhen I first heard finger-style country blues, it blew my mind. I became obsessed. I went all the way back to Charlie Patton. I realized that this was the roots of it. Charlie\u2019s stuff is so fun &#8212; so great to listen to. Country blues is the root of it. Muddy Water and Howlin\u2019 Wolf wanted to be Charlie Patton. Rural blues lends itself to storytelling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Peyton<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"> not only listened to rural blues; he lived the life of an old rural bluesman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing this for a lot of years,\u201d said Peyton. \u201cThe first few years, we were homeless and lived in a van. We never had a rich benefactor &#8212; never had a record label. Everything we ever did was because people saw it and realized it matters. I\u2019m really proud of what we\u2019ve done. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s still possible to make blues music that is fresh. I want to make new music and keep this stuff going. With blues, you have to be yourself. Wilkes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Calling someone a \u201cRenaissance Man\u201d is usually an exaggeration or a bit of hype.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">However, calling J.D. Wilkes a \u201cRenaissance Man\u201d is a spot-on description.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Wilkes, who lives in Paducah, Kentucky, is a musician, visual artist, author, filmmaker, and self-proclaimed \u201cSouthern surrealist.\u201d\u00a0He is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist (notably on harmonica and banjo) who has recorded with Merle Haggard, John Carter Cash, Mike Patton, and Hank Williams III.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Wilkes is perhaps best known as the founder of the Legendary Shack Shakers, a Southern Gothic rock and blues band whose fans include Stephen King, Robert Plant, and former Dead Kennedys front man Jello Biafra.\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0named Wilkes \u201cBest Front Man\u201d at the 2015 Americana Music Association Festival for his performance with the band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI went to art school,\u201d said Wilkes, during a recent phone interview from a tour stop in Raleigh, North Carolina. \u201cThat was my first love. Music came later and then writing came after that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cArt, music, etc \u2013I\u2019m not doing all that stuff all the time. I do dabble in different disciplines but I take time to bring things to fruition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Wilkes most recent recording is \u201cFire Dream,\u201d a solo album that was released in 2018 via Big Legal Mess \/ Fat Possum Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u2018I recorded \u2018Fire Dream\u2019 two years ago,\u201d said Wilkes. \u201cI made it in Memphis at Delta Sounds Studio. It was produced by Jimbo Mathus from the Squirrel Nut Zippers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe \u2018Fire Dream\u2019 stuff is lush and orchestral. It needs a whole band to be played live. On this tour, I\u2019m solo. Low-fi is all I can do ny myself onstage with just banjo and harp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m an old-time bluesy one-man band \u2013 me, banjo, blues harp and stomp porch board. It\u2019s very down home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBasically, what I gravitated toward was what feels good, what comes out of my mind, what I have to work with and what I can emote with just these instruments. I also play some older Shack Shakers stuff that I\u2019ve taken down simple and talk about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Video link for J.D. Flemons co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops, who won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album in 2010 and were nominated for Best Folk Album in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cDom Flemons\u00a0Presents\u00a0Black Cowboys\u201d pays tribute to the music, culture, and the complex history of the golden era of the Wild West. In this single volume of music, Flemons explores and reanalyzes this important part of our American identity. The songs and poems featured on the album are meant to take the listener on an illuminating journey from the trails to the rails of the old west. This is a century old story that follows the footsteps of the thousands of African American pioneers that helped build the United States of America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The instruments featured on \u201cDom Flemons\u00a0Presents\u00a0Black Cowboys\u201d include six-string banjo, cow \u201crhythm\u201d bones, fiddle;\u00a0fife, Fraulini Angelina six-string guitar, Fraulini Angelina six-string guitar-banjo, guitarr\u00f3n, harmonica;\u00a0Hawaiian guitar, kazoo, mandolin, marching bass drum, Original Hound Dog resonator guitar, plectrum four-string banjo, quills (musical instrument, snare drum;\u00a0Stella 12-string guitar, and upright bass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The first album of its kind, \u201cBlack Cowboys\u201d takes the listener on an illuminating journey \u201cfrom the trails to the rails\u201d of the Old West. The 18-song set traverses a varied soundscape featuring string blues, old-time square dance music, and cowboy poetry. Flemons is joined by a celebrated group of backing musicians throughout the record, such as GRAMMY-winning bluesman Alvin \u201cYoungblood\u201d Hart, Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers), and decorated folklorist and Folkways\u2019 director emeritus Dan Sheehy, who co-produced the album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBlack cowboys have been under-represented,\u201d said Flemons, during a phone interview from his home in Silver Spring, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThey\u2019re still around \u2013 and they\u2019re still under-represented in the popular image of the American cowboy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMy research was a combination of library research and field research. Two important research items I found were the book \u2018The Negro Cowboys\u2019 by Philip Durham and a recording called \u2018The Black Texicans.\u2019 Black cowboys were called \u2018Black Vaqueros.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBlack Texicans: Balladeers &amp; Songsters\u201d is an album of field recordings made in the 1930s by noted American musicologists John Lomax and his son Alan Lomax. The album has 29 performances from 1933-1940, most of them previously unreleased. It reflects various aspects of black Texas repertoire, particularly cowboy songs (Texas had a higher percentage of black cowboys than other regions did), but also some blues, work songs, and tunes identified with the songster and minstrel traditions, performed a cappella or with guitar and harmonica accompaniment.\u00a0It features one track by the legendary blues master Leadbelly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI had been very casually collecting material on black cowboys,\u201d said Flemons. \u201cMy search also came from family interests. I\u2019m half-black and half-Mexican. I knew it was time to do this project and that the Smithsonian Institute and the National Museum of African American History and Culture would put it out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cBeing from the South, I knew it was a good idea. The era it focuses on mostly is the mid-1860s to the 1890s and up to the 1920s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe black cowboys were working-class people working the ranches and building their communities. They were in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana and then migrated west to Arizona and Oklahoma. In the Southwest, it mixed with Mexican culture and blended those cultures. People wanted land and wanted to be able to do their own thing. The music they had was a shared tradition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Flemons\u2019 new album delves into the wide variety of traditions on black cowboy music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe well-known songs \u2018Home on the Range\u2019 and \u2018Goodbye Old Paint\u2019 were black cowboy songs,\u201d said Flemons, who has been working as a solo artist since 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe songs on the album represent a lot of styles including North Carolina Piedmont music, blues, old-time music, steel pony blues and East Texas blues. It is musical anthology. Music connects everybody. They recorded a demo in February 2006. The band started to attract attention via its energetic live shows &#8212; enough to gain an appearance at the <a title=\"CMJ\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CMJ\">CMJ<\/a> Music Marathon, fewer than six months after their formation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Ra Ra Riot, which is headlining a show on November 14 at the Theatre of the Living Arts (334 South Street, Philadelphia, 215-222-1011, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lnphilly.com\/\">http:\/\/www.lnphilly.com<\/a>), is also very regular when it comes to recording and releasing albums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The band\u2019s first four albums, all of which were on Barsuk Records, were \u201cThe Rhumb Line\u201d in 2008, \u201cThe Orchard\u201d in 2010, \u201cBeta Love\u201d in 2013, and \u201cNeed Your Light\u201d in 2016. A few months ago, Ra Ra Riot released its new album, \u201cSuperbloom,\u2019 via Rob the Rich Recordings\/Caroline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">This is the band\u2019s first headline tour in support of LP, \u201cSuperbloom,\u201d which was released in August to glowing press from NPR, Pitchfork, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, Under the Radar, FLOOD, Stereogum, and Paste. \u00a0Ra Ra Riot spent this summer on the road supporting Third Eye Blind and Jimmy Eat World and, at the same time, supporting its single \u201cBad To Worse,\u201d which was co-written and produced by Rostam Batmanglij\u00a0(Vampire Weekend, Maggie Rogers, Haim). \u201cSuperbloom\u201d maintains the eclecticism the band has become known for while expanding on its lavish arrangements with elements of psychedelia, new wave, punk and country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe made the album over the course of a year-and-a half,\u201d said Miles, during a recent phone interview from Eugene, Oregon. \u201cWe recorded it in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Seattle and New Jersey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">As the band\u2019s most extravagantly realized work to date, \u201cSuperbloom\u201d finds Ra Ra Riot taking a decidedly pop-minded approach to the album making process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In a departure from the more intimate production of its previous releases, the New York-based band enlisted an entire lineup of collaborators, including their longtime creative partner and former Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij and the production\/songwriting duo Kieron Menzies and Dean Reid (Lana Del Rey, Dua Lipa, Alessia Cara).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt was a long process,\u201d said Miles. \u201cWe worked with a lot of producers and a lot of different songwriters. I\u2019d go to L.A. Matt would be there and we\u2019d work with co-writers. The other guys in the band would work on stiff and send it to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThere also were a few tracks that were written before \u2018Need Your Light\u2019 was cut. They were written but not finished. We did the rest of the tracking in Los Angeles. We finished mixing the album in March.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The new album shows the evolution of the band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">According to Miles, \u201cIn the past, we\u2019ve sometimes gotten in our own way or held back from our poppier tendencies. Working with all these different people and adding their ideas allowed that side of our music to fully manifest itself, in a way that felt really exciting.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In shedding its inhibitions, Ra Ra Riot ultimately created a radiant album &#8212; a selection of songs powered by imaginative yet indelible melodies. At the same time, the band maintains the offbeat eclecticism it has embraced since first forming as a baroque pop outfit back in the mid-2000s &#8212; embedding the lavish arrangements of \u201cSuperbloom\u201d with elements of psychedelia, new wave, punk, and country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe were concerned with achieving uniformity considering all the different producers, co-writers and studios we used for the album,\u201d said Miles. \u201cWe were cultivating this feeling for several years. That\u2019s why the title works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThere was so much going on \u2013 but we let it go. That\u2019s what helped us open up to the different songwriting and contributions we had. Glabicki intends to bring back parts of the\u00a0Rusted Root\u00a0of old, but also including more percussion and female vocals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The Pittsburgh-based singer\/songwriter\/guitarist\u00a0will continue to play\u00a0Rusted Root\u2019s entire catalogue but with a twist. The band will play fresh inspired versions of RR\u2019s tunes along with new unreleased originals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Rusted Root, the multi-platinum band out of Steel City, evolved around front-man Michael Glabicki\u2019s distinct sound and grew into a musical entity that has thrived in a non-genre specific category all its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Now, Glabicki is exploring new sounds and opening new doors with his solo career. He has started touring nationally as a duo with Rusted Root\u2019s guitar player, Dirk Miller, and explains that although he has his roots with Rusted Root, this show is very different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Live, both Glabicki and Miller\u00a0play acoustic and electric and Glabicki often adds rhythm with a kick drum \u2013 creating a much fuller sound and energy than you find with a traditional duo. They also perform at times in a band format under the name Uprooted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cDirk and I \u2013 we\u2019re really hitting it,\u201d said Glabicki, during a recent phone interview from his home in Pittsburgh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re doing about six gigs a month \u2013 doing the whole U.S. I think we started a couple years ago with shows here and there. Now, we\u2019re starting to do bigger tours. It\u2019s a really special show that fans have taken to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve been writing a lot of material I tried to get to fit with Rusted Root and it just wasn\u2019t happening. It just wasn\u2019t clicking for various reasons. I\u2019m not really sure why. This project is clicking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">A multifaceted musician, producer and songwriter, Glabicki has a wealth of musical talent. His duo tour dates and new music are extensions of his creative talent, and while the show still features many Rusted Roots hits, it also provides a look into the mind of Glabicki through stories and songs yet to be released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWith Dirk and me, I wanted to make it a little more cinematic \u2013 and more blues-oriented,\u201d said Glabicki. \u201cI wanted tighter grooves and more impact for vocals as a collective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s a different show. It\u2019s expansive. We\u2019ve spread out the dynamics. I\u2019ve been doing a lot of writing and we\u2019ve been working in the studio \u2013 doing a lot of recording for an upcoming Uprooted record. We\u2019re about three or four months away from finishing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019m still writing tunes and have about five that are almost done. I\u2019ve been testing out songs live both with the Uprooted band and with just me and Dirk. I get informed with both duo and band. That\u2019s how I find the scope of the song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">New recorded music is on the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re working on the new album,\u201d said Glabicki. \u201cThere will be a single out this winter, but I don\u2019t know when yet. The album will be out in the spring. I rewrote a lot of stuff. This will be a whole band album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve had my band Uprooted together for a couple years. Some of the band live in Philly and some in Pittsburgh. They usually come out to Pittsburgh to record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u2018I have my own studio with a lot of analog gear &#8212; a lot of different rhythm mics. I\u2019ve got a really great drum room here. The studio is a good combination of analog and digital \u2013 mostly analog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re embracing a lot of styles \u2013 dance stuff like Bowie\u2019s \u2018Modern Love\u2019 and some experimental stuff. Lyrically, it\u2019s just about writing a good song \u2013 some relationship stuff, some political stuff. We\u2019re doing a lot of cool stuff in the studio.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">With Rusted Root\u2019s hectic schedule, it was time for everyone in the band to take a well-deserved break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Rusted Root, which still includes three of the original five members, still calls Pittsburgh home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The trio of founding members includes\u00a0Michael Glabicki (lead vocals,\u00a0guitar,\u00a0harmonica,\u00a0<a title=\"Protected by Outlook: http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mandolin. We went to Japan. We went to Guam and played for the troops over there. On the average, we play 160-170 shows a year. The numbers have been going up recently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In honor of its 25th Anniversary, Rusted Root embarked on an extensive national tour several years ago to support its most recent album \u201cThe Movement,\u201d which is described by Glabicki as \u201can extremely joyous recording with seriously deep undertones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe Movement\u201d was released on Shanachie Records in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Rusted Root, which is known for its fusion of acoustic, rock and world music, has recorded eight albums and sold over three million records worldwide. The band\u2019s music has been featured in films such as \u201cIce Age,\u201d \u201cTwister\u201d and \u201cMatilda\u201d and TV shows such as \u201cAlly McBeal,\u201d \u201cNew Girl\u201d and \u201cCharmed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Now, for the time being, Rusted Root has been placed in a state of suspended animation. Glabicki is keeping his perpetual motion going with Uprooted and with duo shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cMe and Dirk have been doing a lot of duo shows and that was the inspiration for Uprooted,\u201d said Glabicki. \u201cWith just two of us, we\u2019ve been getting more in synch with each other \u2013 and we realized that there was this vast landscape to be explored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cPeople are loving it. And, we\u2019re having fun and learning more about ourselves. The band\u2019s current line-up features Adam Deitch: drums, percussion; Adam \u201cShmeeans\u201d Smirnoff: guitar; Erick \u201cJesus\u201d Coomes: bass; Ryan Zoidis: alto, baritone and tenor sax, Korg X-911; Eric \u201cBenny\u201d Bloom: trumpet, horns; and Nigel Hall: vocals, Hammond B-3, Rhodes, clavinet, keyboards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe met at Berklee in 1992,\u201d said Zoidis, during a phone interview last week from a tour stop in Minneapolis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe were in high school and it was a five-week summer program. We met, played together and had instant chemistry. We\u2019re pretty lucky to have had that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">They all ended up back at Berklee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cA year after that summer program, we all enrolled at Berklee. We were all staying in the same dorm. We started playing together more then. We played a lot of college parties. After we graduated, we all went on to do different things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">A powerhouse collective made up of world-class master musicians, Lettuce is known for its incendiary live shows, extensive touring, die-hard fans, and massive two-decade-plus career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">They are also some of the most highly sought-after musicians in the industry with roots that run deep into the worlds of hip-hop, pop, and beyond. I have a wine business in Colorado, but my main focus is Lettuce.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Lettuce is now touring in support of its new album, \u201cElevate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded the album in November last year at Colorado Sound Studio outside of Denver with engineer Russ Elevado,\u201d said Zoidis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cPrior to going into the studio, we sent files back and forth to each other. We also collaborated on writing during soundchecks. We plated some of the new songs live for a while before we recorded them<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe just finished mixing and mastering our next record. The songs are from our \u2018Elevate\u2019 sessions. We had 27 songs. And, we went back and cut a few more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cOur influences are 90s hip hop, jazz, reggae, world jazz, electronic and dub. It\u2019s psychedelic funk explorative music. The group also includes bassist MonoNeon, a.k.a. Dywane Thomas Jr., keyboardist Dominique Xavier Taplin, saxophonist\/flutist Michael Jelani Brooks, and saxophonist\/flutist Sylvester Onyejiaka<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe met in Snarky Puppy,\u201d said Werth. \u201cMichael League, the leader of Snarky Puppy, had Sput and I solo at the same time. We were talking rhythmically. After the shows, fans came up and said \u2013 this is crazy. We were getting a lot of great feedback.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Searight said, \u201cThe foundation actually started long before that. It was brewing since Day One of me and Nate playing together. We were playing as one person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">In 2014, Searight and Werth wanted to create another band that would focus on percussion and what they termed &#8220;conscious funk.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe started playing with the two of us and eventually just started finding different members for the band,\u201d said Searight. \u201cWe wanted a soloist and a bass player. We added people one at a time. It was a natural process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Werth said, \u201cThere is a core group with nine of us. We can\u2019t afford to take all nine on the road so there are seven of us in the touring band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The road line-up features keyboardist Vaughn Henry, guitarist Peter Knudsen, MonoNeon, Dominique Xavier Taplin, Michael Jelani Brooks, Werth and Searight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Ghost-Note released its first album, \u201cFortified,\u201d on the Ropeadope label in October 2015. The album went to No. 1 on the iTunes Jazz chart<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe recorded it in 2015,\u201d said Wert. \u201cIt was just me and Sput in the studio. We were just stacking out tracks \u2013 just cloning ourselves. Different friends stopped by and jumped in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe took it out on tour. At first, it was a band with drummers. After that, we realized we could expand more with a soloist and a bass player<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Swagism was Ghost-Note&#8217;s second album, released in April 2018 on Ropeadope. This album also went to No. 1 on the iTunes Jazz chart It featured guitarist Raja Kassis, spoken word artist and author Prudence the Auset Sneed, saxophonist Kamasi Washington and guitarist Brandon &#8220;Taz&#8221; Neiderauer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the process of recording three new albums,\u201d said Werth. \u201cWe\u2019ll be making the records at 206 Studio in L.A.
