{"id":43648,"date":"2019-08-29T09:52:07","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T13:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=43648"},"modified":"2019-08-29T09:52:12","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T13:52:12","slug":"on-stage-n-c-band-basks-in-philly-limelight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=43648","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: N.C. band &#8216;Bask(s)&#8217; in Philly limelight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN\"><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <\/span><em><span lang=\"EN\">Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10088\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Bask-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10088\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10088\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Bask-2-350x235.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"235\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bask<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Labor Day Weekend is here, and pumpkin festivals are looming on the horizon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The season for basking is just about over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">But, the season for Bask never ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bask is a band from Asheville, North Carolina featuring <\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Scott Middleton \u2013 Drums, Jesse Van Note \u2013 Bass, Ray Worth &#8211; Guitar, Vocals, and Zeb Camp &#8211; Guitar, Vocals.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">On August 29, Bask will headline a show at Kung Fu Necktie (1248 North Front Street, Philadelphia, 215-291-4919, <a href=\"http:\/\/kungfunecktie.com\/\">kungfunecktie.com<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019ve played Kung Fu Necktie three or four times already,\u201d said Middleton, during a phone interview last week from his home in Asheville. \u201cWe always have a great show in Philly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bask is a band from the South but not a \u201cSouthern Rock\u201d band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bask\u2019s Facebook page has the following message \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cLetter to the listener:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Progressive; heavy; psychedelic; Americana, have all been used to describe Bask. The truth, we are four musicians based in Asheville, North Carolina who love making music. We want rhythm heard for miles, melodies remembered for weeks and an honesty and sincerity felt to your bones. Most of all we want you to listen without concern for what you are hearing. To listen only for the sake of hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Esse Quam Videri,<\/span><span lang=\"EN\"><br \/>\nBask\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Esse Quam Videri\u201d is a line Bask lifted from the state motto of North Carolina. It is a Latin phrase meaning \u201cto be rather than to seem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bask has been making music in the mountains of Carolina for the last five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe\u2019re from different places and we all ended up here,\u201d said Middleton. \u201cI grew up in Charlotte. Ray is from Virginia. Jesse is from upstate New York. Zeb is also from North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe came here for the music \u2013 and the atmosphere. We\u2019re in jam band territory here but we\u2019re not really a jam band. We play music that we call heavy melodic music. It\u2019s heavy rock with mostly clean vocals \u2013 music that is spacey and progressive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cRay and I were playing with different people. We started playing together and had 75 percent of the first album written in a year-and-a-half. Jesse came in and added his stuff. Zeb played his first show with the band a month after the album came out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bask\u2019s debut album was \u201cAmerican Hollow,\u201d which was released initially in 2014 on Wonderboy Records and as a CD in 2015 on This Charming Man Records. The quartet\u2019s sophomore album, \u201cRamble Beyond,\u201d was released in March 2017 on Self Aware Records\/ This Charming Man Records.<br \/>\n\u201cWe recorded the first album in a cabin in Monroeville, North Carolina with Chris \u2018Scary\u2019 Adams,\u201d said Middleton. \u201cWe made the second in Johnson City, Tennessee with<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">Travis Kammeyer, who is in the space rock band HAAL.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cAmerican Hollow\u201d was r<\/span><span lang=\"EN\">ecorded and mixed by at Old Dominion Studio in Virginia and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audio Siege Engineering in Portland, Oregon.\u201cRamble Beyond\u201d was produced and engineered by Kammeyer at Fahrenheit Studios in Johnson City and mixed by Andrew Schneider at Translator Audio in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Bask now has a new label \u2013 Season of Mist \u2013 and a new album ready to come out. The recording was done at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe had the comfort of being at home,\u201d said Middleton. \u201cWe recorded the album with legendary producer Matt Bayles. We e-mailed him and asked if he would produce our album &#8212; and he said yes. A lot of his early work was among our influences at the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cWe cranked the album out in four-and-a-half 12-hour days. Matt did a really good job. And, Echo Mountain is one of the best studios in the South.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">The eclectic roster of bands that have used Echo Mountain includes Band of Horses, Widespread Panic and War on Drugs. Bayles\u2019 CV for studio work features acts such as Mastodon, Isis and Russian Circles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThe new album, which is coming out in the fall, is more collaborative than our first two,\u201d said Middleton. \u201cThe new stuff is prog-ier. She will bring her creative show to the area for a<a>show on August 30 at Sofar Philadelphia <\/a>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sofarsounds.com\/cities\/philadelphia\/events\/27173\">https:\/\/www.sofarsounds.com\/cities\/philadelphia\/events\/27173<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">ESS SEE in the moniker for Sarah Cobb, a talented and versatile Brooklyn-based musician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cobb began producing her electro-pop demos in 2009 alone in her bedroom at night &#8212; homing in on seductive melodies often featuring themes dealing with identity, intimacy, and femininity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Embracing lyrical influences such as St. Vincent, Emily Haines, Carole King, and Garbage, ESS\u00a0SEE\u00a0delivers a heightened sense of vulnerability and intimacy in her songwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Her rich, often theatrical, live performances engage audiences with eye-popping costumes, humor, and an electric presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">ESS SEE\u2019s debut EP, \u201cOrdinary Woman,\u201d was released in 2017, and her first full length album, \u201cWaiting For The Sky To Fall,\u201d just came out on August 23. The new album was produced by Julie Kathryn of <a href=\"spotify:artist:2n5N4cNWFXteVft4LqiKfE\">I Am Snow Angel<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve been living in Brooklyn for 11 years but I\u2019m originally from Arkansas \u2013 from Little Rock,\u201d said Cobb, during a recent phone interview from her New York home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was always singing when I was growing up. I started writing songs when I started taking guitar lessons in high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI kept writing and working on guitar when I was in college in Georgia \u2013 at Savannah College of Art and Design. After college, I lived in Washington, D.C. for a year-and-a-half and then I moved to New York. That was in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI was living in Brooklyn and my music career took a while to get going. I bought a studio setup in 2009 and produced music for myself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI had a Dropbox full of songs but never did anything with them. It got to a point where I knew I had to do something. So, I gathered my songs and sent them to Mike Beck. Then, Mike and I made my first EP.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">ESS SEE\u2019s debut EP, \u201cOrdinary Woman,\u201d was produced by Mike Beck and released January 13, 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cThat EP was grassroots,\u201d said Cobb. \u201cI just wanted to see what it would be like to connect to the world of being a musician.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">Cobb found her place in that world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI\u2019ve been playing shows consistently since my first gig as ESS SEE, which was at C\u2019Mon Everybody in Brooklyn in July 2017,\u201d said Cobb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cFor the new album, I got hooked up with Julie Kathryn. I met her through my guitarist Charlie Rauh. He wrote all the guitar hooks in my songs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI made the album with Julie in her studio using Ableton. I also recorded some vocals in my house and sent them over to her. Julie did the production and the mixing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cNow the live shows are different. It\u2019s usually just Charlie and I when I\u2019m out on tour. We also have Dylan Hiester with us.
