{"id":4205,"date":"2011-08-09T09:07:54","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T13:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=4205"},"modified":"2011-08-09T09:07:54","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T13:07:54","slug":"pocopson-schedules-managed-deer-hunt-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=4205","title":{"rendered":"Pocopson schedules managed deer hunt season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">For third straight year, hunt will aim to cut down on overpopulation of deer<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Kelli Siehl<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Correspondent, UnionvilleTimes.com<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4207\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/deer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4207\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4207 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"deer\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/deer-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pocopson plans a managed deer hunt to thin local herds, starting with bow hunting, next month.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>POCOPSON \u2014 A vision of beauty and grace, deer are nice to look at but looks can be deceiving.\u00a0 These animals are harbingers of the tiny ticks that carry Lyme disease, cause thousands of dollars in automobile damage and as virtual eating machines, they destroy acres of farm crops as well as backyard landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>According to Don Lane, Chairman of the township&#8217;s Deer Management Committee, state game officials say there should be no more than 10 deer per acre of land.\u00a0 In semi-rural, wooded areas like the township, that number jumps to as many as 20 deer per acre.\u00a0 To help control the growing numbers, the township is holding its third annual managed deer hunt. \u00a0It will encompass several township properties and will take place on the following dates:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>September 19th thru November 26th \u2013 archery only<\/li>\n<li>November 28th thru December 10th \u2013 archery\/gun<\/li>\n<li>December 26th thru January 28th, 2012 \u2013 archery only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lane says there will be postings on several township properties advising of a \u201cmanaged deer hunt in progress\u201d and visitors are asked to stay on walking trails and to keep pets leashed at all times.<\/p>\n<p>So far, 11 hunters have been approved to participate and will be issued bright green identification badges to help alleviate concerns when seen by residents and visitors. Hunting will be permitted on the designated dates from daybreak until 10 am and from 2 pm until dusk but will not be allowed on Sunday, it remains prohibited under state law. Anyone with questions pertaining to the Pocopson Township Deer Management Program should call 484-433-2957.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that deer are on the minds of many area residents, especially those of hunters, hikers, landowners and horseback riders.
