{"id":40629,"date":"2018-09-01T09:49:13","date_gmt":"2018-09-01T13:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=40629"},"modified":"2018-09-01T09:49:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-01T13:49:40","slug":"unionville-cant-find-the-magic-again-rally-fall-short-19-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=40629","title":{"rendered":"Unionville can&#8217;t find the magic again, rally falls short, 19-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_7988\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MEM4765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7988\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7988\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/MEM4765-350x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unionville&#8217;s Joe Fariello fins running room against Academy Park.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By Al Tustin<\/strong>, <em>Sports Editor, The Times<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">EAST MARLBOROUGH \u2014 Apparently, lightning does not strike twice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although Unionville mounted a furious, final two-minute rally, to almost come from behind against Academy Park, eerily like last season\u2019s game, the Indians fell short, losing 19-14, when a final drive stalled in the last 30 seconds of a game delayed by lighting in the area at the scheduled kickoff time.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although the loss was a frustrating one for the defending District One, 5A champs, it was evident that (0-2) Unionville found a higher gear in the second half and nearly overcame a deficit against one of the top teams, the 2-0 Knights, in the district. The overall performance was a big step up from the season-opening los to Garnet Valley.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYou figure out that you have to play hard every play,\u201d Unionville Head Coach pat Clark said. \u201cI just told them, you have to play like every snap matters \u2014 you can\u2019t give a play away and hope to make it up later. It\u2019s been the hall mark of our program that our kids play hard every snap. and so, we\u2019re learning that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7989\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UHSAPfb18-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7989\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7989\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/UHSAPfb18-1-350x277.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unionville Quarterback Blake Charlton hands off to Connor Schilling.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And after a lackluster first half \u2014 dominated by pouring rain \u2014 the Indians began to play better, especially on defense, as the rains eased and the young team began to find itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yes, the echoes of last years\u2019 23-20 win by Unionville started to get louder in the final quarter, when trailing 19-0, the Indians finally found themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gabe McLaughlin stripped Knights&#8217;\u00a0 QB Skylor Fillis, forcing a fumble that Cole Sheehan fell on the endzone, lighting a flicker of hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After moving the ball much of the night, but stalling \u2014 notably a drive that failed deep in Knights\u2019 territory late in the first half \u2014 the Indians offense was able to put together a sustained drive. After QB Blake Charlton scored on a one-yard run, the flicker turned into a serious flame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moments later, the flame roared when Eli Lyons managed to recover the ensuing onside kick \u2014 and suddenly, remarkably, Unionville had a chance to roar from behind and win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But with the ball at midfield, Academy Park\u2019s Tyree Estes ripped through an offensive line that struggled at times throughout the game, and sacked Charlton, burying Unionville deep in its own end. Unable to move the ball, the drive stalled and the Indians turned the ball over on downs in the closing seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Although unhappy about the loss, now equalling the number of losses in 2017\u2019s 13-2 campaign, Clark said he thought his team had turned a quarter and really learned what it takes to play varsity football.
