{"id":39753,"date":"2018-06-07T08:40:08","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T12:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=39753"},"modified":"2018-06-07T08:40:16","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T12:40:16","slug":"on-stage-boeing-boeing-hits-candlelight-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=39753","title":{"rendered":"On Stage: &#8216;Boeing, Boeing&#8217; hits Candlelight stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Denny Dyroff<\/strong>, <em>Entertainment Editor, The Times<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/BoeingLogo-450x450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7374\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/BoeingLogo-450x450-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The Candlelight Theatre (2208 Millers Road, Arden, Delaware,\u00a0302- 475-2313,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org\/\">www.candlelighttheatredelaware.org<\/a>) is always a great place to enjoy an evening of top-flight musical theater entertainment along with a tasty buffet dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the comfortable theater, which is located a few miles south of Concordville, has an annual schedule that features all musicals \u2013 except for one play.<\/p>\n<p>Now through June 24, the Candlelight is presenting that \u201cone play.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But, the production will not be too heavy for the dinner theater crowd \u2013 no weighty drama, no serious topics, nothing mentally intense. Instead, the play is a comedy \u2013 a very funny farce titled \u201cBoeing Boeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoeing Boeing\u201d is set in Paris, France \u2013- set in an era when Paris was the \u201cCity of Love,\u201d flight attendants were called stewardesses, and the \u201cSwinging 60s\u201d was all about fun-loving good times. It was also an era when \u201cstewardesses had to be single females between the ages of 21 and 27 and have a &#8216;neatly proportioned figure&#8217; and &#8216;pleasing appearance&#8217;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s 1964, it\u2019s Paris, and Bernard, an\u00a0American architect playboy, is successfully juggling being engaged to three attractive stewardesses with the help of his faithful housekeeper, Berthe. When changed schedules have the flight attendants arriving at his door on the same day, panic also arrives.<\/p>\n<p>A rip-roaring bedroom farce written by Marc Camoletti,\u00a0\u201cBoeing Boeing\u201d\u00a0debuted on Broadway in 1965. The 2008 revival garnered several Tony nominations including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Award_for_Best_Performance_by_a_Featured_Actress_in_a_Play\">Best Featured Actress<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Award_for_Best_Direction_of_a_Play\">Best Director<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Award_for_Best_Costume_Design\">Best Costume Design<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Award_for_Best_Sound_Design_of_a_Play\">Best Sound Design<\/a>\u00a0and won the Tony\u00a0for Best Revival of a Play and Mark Rylance who played Robert, won for Best Leading Actor.<\/p>\n<p>The English language adaptation, translated by\u00a0Beverley Cross, was first staged in London at the\u00a0Apollo Theatre\u00a0in 1962 and transferred to the\u00a0Duchess Theatre\u00a0in 1965, running for a total of seven years.\u00a0In 1991, the play was listed in the\u00a0Guinness Book of Records\u00a0as the most performed French play throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>The show at Candlelight, which is directed by Bob Kelly, has a cast featuring Tori Healy (Berthe, the maid), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Ian-Agnew\/\">Ian Agnew<\/a> (Bernard), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Eric-Rupp\/\">Eric Rupp<\/a> (Robert), Heather Ferrell (Gabriella), Marybeth Williamson (Gloria), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Sophie-Jones\/\">Sophie Jones<\/a> (Gretchen).<\/p>\n<p>Previously, Jones performed the pivotal role of Guinevere from the time she was Lady Guinevere until the time she was Queen Guinevere in the Candlelight\u2019s production of \u201cCamelot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones grew up in Mankato, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota-Mankato in spring of 2015 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in musical theater.<\/p>\n<p>After graduation, she travelled east to Pennsylvania. Jones also travelled back in time \u2013 initially to the 16th century and then to the fifth and sixth centuries. Her journey to the 16th century took place in the middle of a recent summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got cast in the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire at Mount Hope,\u201d said Jones, during a phone interview Monday afternoon from her apartment in South Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent the summer through November living in Manheim and working at the Faire. I was an apothecary \u2013 an apothecary selling mints.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones then left central Pennsylvania and relocated to South Philly. It was then that her career path took her to the theater in Arden, Delaware.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw a Theatre Philadelphia page posting about auditions at the Candlelight,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI figured \u2013 why not audition? That was back in mid-November. I did the usual audition and then Bob (Kelly) asked me to come back a second time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had never seen the show, but I was familiar with some of the songs from back when I was taking voice lessons. When I was auditioning for the BFA Musical Theater program at the University of Minnesota-Mankato, one of my main songs was \u2018The Simple Joys of Maidenhood.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones had no such unfamiliarity with \u201cBoeing Boeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had actually done the show a couple years ago,\u201d said Jones. \u201cI played Gretchen in the summer of 2015 in South Dakota at the Prairie Repertory Theater in Brookings, South Dakota. \u201cI really like the role. Every time you do it again, it\u2019s different. This Gretchen is definitely more mature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw that Candlelight was doing \u2018Boeing Boeing,\u2019 I thought \u2013 oh, this is exciting because I had already done it. It\u2019s a great little show \u2013 perfect for the summer. It fits really well with the Candlelight\u2019s production schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones has gotten to be \u201cold friends\u201d with Gretchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like Gretchen\u2019s exuberance for life,\u201d said Jones. \u201cShe\u2019s not afraid to voice her opinion. She\u2019s a little bit no-nonsense, And, she\u2019s stubborn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis role is a blast to do. It\u2019s a very active and physical role, I don\u2019t have to go to a gym because I get a lot of cardio on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though there are no lavish musical production numbers, Candlelight audiences are still loving this show.<\/p>\n<p>Asked why audiences like this show so much, Jones said, \u201cBecause it\u2019s fun to watch other people try to deal with their own mistakes \u2013 how they get in trouble and plot to get out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video link for \u201cBoeing Boeing\u201d &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ywyDF7y19ms\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/ywyDF7y19ms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings (doors 6 p.m.\/show, 8 p.m.) and Sunday afternoons (doors, 1 p.m.\/show, 3 p.m.). Tickets, which include dinner and show, are $63 for adults and $33 for children (ages 4-12).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7375\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/marc-silver-and-the-stonethrowers-at-winterthur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7375\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7375\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/marc-silver-and-the-stonethrowers-at-winterthur-350x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Stonethrowers<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On June 7, Winterthur Museum, Garden &amp; Library (Route 52, Wilmington, Delaware, 800-448-3883, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winterthur.org\/\">www.winterthur.org<\/a>) will host its inaugural presentation of the 2018 \u201cSummer Nights at Winterthur\u201d series with a live outdoor concert by The Stonethrowers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSummer Nights at Winterthur\u201d features live music, a beer garden, a variety of food selections, and other offerings at \u201cWinterthur After Hours,\u201d including our first-ever garden exhibition, \u201cFollies: Architectural Whimsy in the Garden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each \u201cAfter Hours\u201d event will be located in the beautiful Winterthur landscape \u2013 allowing visitors to explore the Galleries and grounds.<\/p>\n<p>The concert, which will be held along Clenny Run stream from 5:30-8 p.m., features the sounds of Marc Silver\u2019s Americana band, The Stonethrowers. The group performs an array of original and traditional songs with a unique mix of country and popular music. \u201cAfter Hours on Clenny Run\u201d are BYO\u00a0(Bring-your-own) items.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:30 p.m., Winterthur\u2019s Director of Garden and Estate, will lead a 30-minute walking tour of featured garden follies in Winterthur\u2019s new exhibition,\u00a0\u201cFollies: Architectural Whimsy in the Garden.\u201d\u00a0Tour participants are instructed to gather at the entrance to the cottage store.<\/p>\n<p>Video link for The Stonethrowers &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S7yw_MjAaqI\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/S7yw_MjAaqI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for students and free for children (13 and under).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7376\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/too-many-zooz-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7376\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7376\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/too-many-zooz-3-350x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Too Many Zooz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When bands are just getting started, it is often said that the only way for them to go is up.<\/p>\n<p>This was especially true for Too Many Zooz, a New York City-based band featuring Leo Pellegrino (baritone saxophone), Matt \u201cDoe\u201d Muirhead (trumpet) and David \u201cKing of Sludge\u201d Parks (percussion).<\/p>\n<p>Too Many Zooz got its start playing on the subway platforms in Manhattan. The only way for the trio to eventually was \u201cup\u201d \u2013 up into the daylight, on to the stages of clubs and eventually playing backup for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beyonc%C3%A9\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0for her televised\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CMA_Awards\">CMA Awards<\/a>\u00a0performance in November 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just finished a tour and I\u2019m here in San Francisco, one of my favorite places,\u201d said Pellegrino, during a recent phone interview. \u201cThe other guys are in other places right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re starting a new tour of the East Coast on June 7 in Washington, D.C. Then, we\u2019re playing some dates on the West Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That tour brings Too Many Zooz to the area on June 8 for a show at Fillmore Philadelphia (1100 Canal Street, Philadelphia, 215-309-0150, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefillmorephilly.com\/\">www.thefillmorephilly.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Pellegrino and Muirhead met when they were students at the\u00a0Manhattan School of Music. Pellegrino and Parks had played together in Drumadics, a local\u00a0busking band. In mid-2013, they formed a trio and began busking together at various stations in the\u00a0New York City Subway. They gained fame when a video of one of their subway performances, recorded by a passer-by at the\u00a0Union Square station, went viral on\u00a0YouTube\u00a0in March 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The trio has released four EPs since 2014, dropped its first full-length\u00a0\u201cSubway Gawdz\u201d in 2016, and has racked up millions of views of its live videos on YouTube. Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s team was impressed with the videos and hired the band to perform on the songs \u201cDaddy Issues\u201d and \u201cFormation\u201d on her album \u201cLemonade,\u201d which was nominated for the Grammy for Album of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatt and I live in Philadelphia now \u2013 so that was a change,\u201d said Pellegrino. \u201cIt really doesn\u2019t matter where we live because we tour so much. Philly is close to New York \u2013 and it\u2019s also a big city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a lot of people in Philly. I\u2019m from Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh people migrate to Philadelphia. I went to CAPA for high school in Pittsburgh and then to college at Manhattan School of Music. That\u2019s where I met Matt and then David and I met in the subway. Union Square was our favorite \u2013 but we never had an official permit to play there until recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe released four EPs and then out debut album. We recorded the album last April at Platinum Sound Recording Studios in Manhattan. And did a few tracks at Studio Trilogy in San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too Many Zooz created its style by playing in the subway for people \u2013 as many as 30,000-40,000 people over the course of a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>The trio\u2019s discography includes \u201cF NOTE\u201d EP (January 2014), \u201cFanimals\u201d EP (September 2014),\u00a0 \u201cBrasshouse Volume 1: Survival of the Flyest\u201d EP\u00a0(November 2014), \u201cThe Internet\u201d EP (May 2015) and \u201cSubway Gawdz\u201d\u00a0LP (June 2016).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest change in our playing is that we have to do more songs,\u201d said Pellegrino. \u201cWhen we first started playing, it was all improvisational. After a while, we learned to play songs that people wanted. Now, it\u2019s a combination of songs and improv.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too Many Zooz describes its music as \u201cbrass house.\u201d It is an amalgamation of New York City music \u2013 jazz, hip hop, funk, rock, R&amp;B, improv and even EDM.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur music is a mixture of sounds,\u201d said Pellegrino. \u201cIt is representative of New York City. It marks the fourth staging of the PIFA event. Known for its engaging performances curated by The Kimmel Center from around the globe, the festival was first developed in 2011 drawing increasing audiences locally and attracting regional visitors seeking out the ultimate Philly experience. The 2018 festival is running now through June 10.<\/p>\n<p>Performances include live theater, dance, and interactive visual art installations that transform the city for a multi-arts takeover of the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus, public spaces, parks, and outdoor spaces throughout the heart of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most ambitious presentations is \u201cCristal Palace,\u201d which is being performed nightly at 8 p.m. through June 10.<\/p>\n<p>Transe Express, the celebrated French performance troupe, returns with the world premiere of\u00a0Cristal Palace, a 360-degree immersive event featuring a musician-topped chandelier as the centerpiece for the most unusual dance party Philly has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>On June 7, \u201cSEA (Singular Extreme Actions)\u201d will be staged at the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Audience members can watch as the laws of physics are put to the test at\u00a0SEA (Singular Extreme Actions), a Philadelphia premiere event from the mind of MacArthur Genius Award winner Elizabeth Streb. Human bodies careen through, around, and above a physical and kinetic set, thrilling audiences with athleticism and a healthy dose of bravery. \u201cSEA\u201d is a kaleidoscope of movement where every performer is dubbed an \u201caction hero\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This will be the Philadelphia premiere of\u00a0SEA\u00a0(Singular Extreme Actions).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTape Riot\u201d by Asphalt Piloten will be performed at secret locations revealed to ticket holders on June 7 and 8 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. each day.<\/p>\n<p>Without the constraints of a theatrical performance structure, this hybrid dance art tour permits audience members freedom of movement throughout the city. Starting at a Center City, Philadelphia, mystery location \u2013 revealed only to ticketholders through a communication before the performance \u2013 audiences will be guided through a journey leaving artistic traces of gaffer tape as hints along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, they will experience pieces of artistry from a quartet of artists which combine electronic soundscapes, and award-winning choreography to create a dynamic performance. Asphalt Piloten\u2019s\u00a0\u201cTape Riot,\u201d which is a U.S. premiere,\u00a0is a performance that pushes against traditional boundaries by infiltrating urban public spaces to create a totally unexpected and unique experience.<\/p>\n<p>The Philadelphia premiere of \u201cThe Fever\u201d by 600 HIGHWAYMEN will be presented at the SEI Innovation Studio at the Kimmel Center on June 7 at 7 p.m., June 8 and 9 at 7 and 10 p.m. and June 10 at 2 and 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>At a time when we feel most divided as a nation, the Obie Award-winning creative team\u00a0The New Yorker\u00a0calls \u201cNew York\u2019s best nontraditional company\u201d gifts audiences with a common purpose through acting together. The newest experiential show from 600 HIGHWAYMEN taps into the limits of human existence.<\/p>\n<p>On June 9, PIFA will feature the second part of the Philadelphia premiere of \u201cTaylor Mac: A 24-Decade History of Popular Music,\u201d performed by Taylor Mac in association with Pomegranate Arts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPART I (1776 \u2013 1896)\u201d was performed on June 2. \u201cPART II (1896 \u2013 Present)\u201d will be performed on June 9 at the Merriam Theater from noon-midnight.<\/p>\n<p>This epic 24-hour performance art concert exorcizes the social history of the United States &#8212; 240 years in the making and 24 hours in the telling. It is a spectacular pop odyssey with more than 24 musicians and 100 local performers &#8212; including burlesque performers, a choir, a marching band, and knitters.<\/p>\n<p>The only presentation of the complete\u00a024-Decades\u00a0on the East Coast, this epic event (hailed as a Ring Cycle for the 21st Century), will be presented as two 12-hour parts, the longest presentation segments since Taylor\u2019s historic 24-hour marathon performance in Brooklyn last fall. Proceeds from the weekend will benefit the Rex Foundation (founded by the Grateful Dead) and Camp Winnarainbow, Wavy Gravy&#8217;s summer camp for kids.
