{"id":38304,"date":"2018-02-06T14:40:34","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T19:40:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=38304"},"modified":"2018-02-06T14:40:35","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T19:40:35","slug":"students-questioning-mascot-should-learn-their-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=38304","title":{"rendered":"Students questioning mascot should learn their history"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>To The Editor,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Letters1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Letters1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a>The Unionville-Chadds Ford students who are advocating <span class=\"s1\">the <\/span>removal of our\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">Ind<\/span><span class=\"s3\">i<\/span>an <span class=\"s2\">Ma<\/span><span class=\"s1\">scot <\/span><span class=\"s2\">are <\/span>showing their h<span class=\"s4\">i<\/span>storic <span class=\"s1\">ignoran<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ce and poss<\/span><span class=\"s3\">i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">b<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ly <\/span>their <span class=\"s1\">bigotry<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. <\/span>The\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">Lenape <\/span>Indians lived <span class=\"s2\">in <\/span>our <span class=\"s2\">region <\/span>long before European <span class=\"s1\">i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">mmigran<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ts a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rr<\/span><span class=\"s3\">i<\/span>ved and slowly, mainly <span class=\"s2\">pe<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ac<\/span><span class=\"s2\">efully<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, pu<\/span><span class=\"s2\">sh <\/span>their\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Ind<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ia<\/span><span class=\"s1\">n neighbors<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s5\">to <\/span>the west. <span class=\"s2\">The <\/span><span class=\"s4\">l<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ast Lenape\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ind<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ia<\/span><span class=\"s6\">n, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Ind<\/span><span class=\"s7\">i<\/span>an <span class=\"s6\">Hannah, <\/span>in t<span class=\"s2\">he <\/span>regi<span class=\"s2\">on <\/span><span class=\"s6\">died <\/span><span class=\"s4\">i<\/span><span class=\"s6\">n <\/span><span class=\"s8\">1802. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">T<\/span>here <span class=\"s6\">may <\/span>still be Lena<span class=\"s2\">pe In<\/span>d<span class=\"s2\">ians\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">on <\/span>reservat<span class=\"s3\">io<\/span>ns in <span class=\"s2\">the <\/span>west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Perhaps UCF district should\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">require history <\/span>classes\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">detailing <\/span>what has happened <span class=\"s4\">i<\/span>n <span class=\"s6\">our region over <\/span>the <span class=\"s1\">ages<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Our mascot<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span>was chosen <span class=\"s2\">to <\/span><span class=\"s1\">h<\/span><span class=\"s2\">onor <\/span>tlte Lenape <span class=\"s1\">I<\/span><span class=\"s2\">n<\/span><span class=\"s1\">d<\/span><span class=\"s2\">i<\/span><span class=\"s1\">a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ns, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">an<\/span><span class=\"s2\">d <\/span>not as a derisive\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">i<\/span><span class=\"s6\">mpact <\/span>our <span class=\"s3\">re<\/span><span class=\"s6\">gion<\/span><span class=\"s3\">&#8216;<\/span><span class=\"s6\">s <\/span>earlie<span class=\"s2\">r inhabitants<\/span>. <span class=\"s6\">NO ONE CAN <\/span><span class=\"s2\">ERASE HISTOR<\/span>Y. <span class=\"s6\">Our <\/span>dis<span class=\"s2\">tr<\/span>ict\u00a0<span class=\"s2\">ha<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s far <\/span>mo<span class=\"s3\">r<\/span>e important needs <span class=\"s2\">o<\/span><span class=\"s1\">n <\/span>which <span class=\"s2\">to spend <\/span>its <span class=\"s1\">li<\/span><span class=\"s2\">m<\/span><span class=\"s1\">i<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ted <\/span>time<span class=\"s3\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><strong>Bruce B<span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><span class=\"s6\">Yel<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ton<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><strong>Poco<span class=\"s2\">ps<\/span>on<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To The Editor, The Unionville-Chadds Ford students who are advocating the removal of our\u00a0Indian Mascot are showing their historic ignorance and possibly their bigotry. The\u00a0Lenape Indians lived in our region long before European immigrants arrived and slowly, mainly peacefully, push their\u00a0Indian neighbors\u00a0to the west. The last Lenape\u00a0Indian, Indian Hannah, in the region died in 1802.
