{"id":3553,"date":"2011-06-07T15:08:32","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T19:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=3553"},"modified":"2011-06-07T15:08:32","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T19:08:32","slug":"uhs-class-of-2011-goes-out-in-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=3553","title":{"rendered":"UHS Class of 2011 goes out in style"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Music, fun and a few somber moments highlight 88th Unionville Commencement<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>By Mike McGann<\/strong>, <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><em>Editor, UnionvilleTimes.com<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3561\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/UHSGrad2011-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3561\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3561 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"UHSGrad2011-4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/UHSGrad2011-4-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caps fly through the air as Unionville High School&#39;s Class of 2011 celebrates their graduation, Tuesday, at the University of Delaware&#39;s Carpenter Center.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>NEWARK, Del. \u2014 At times solemn, at other times raucous, Unionville High School\u2019s Class of 2011 celebrated the school\u2019s 88th commencement just one way: it\u2019s own.<\/p>\n<p>The packed ceremony at the University of Delaware\u2019s Carpenter Center featured a lot of things one might expect from a graduation: a look back at the past, some advice for moving forward and \u2014 of course \u2014 no small amount of celebration for the graduates and their friends and families.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But, Unionville being Unionville, there were more than a few unusual touches, from somewhat somber references that this will be retiring Superintendent of Schools\u2019 Sharon Parker\u2019s final ceremony, to a live music performance in lieu of a student speech that brought the house down to more than a few tongue-in-cheek references to the chaos and controversy regarding the renovations of the high school.<\/p>\n<p>Unionville High School principal Paula Massanari set the tone for the afternoon, characterizing the event with two words: priceless and bittersweet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of you have had the good fortune to receive a priceless education,\u201d she told the graduating class. \u201cIsn\u2019t there a teacher, you\u2019ll never forget, one you\u2019ll tell your children and grandchildren about?\u201d She noted that despite that, it was understandable that many students might feel a bit bittersweet about moving on from Unionville.<\/p>\n<p>Parker, when she took her turn to address the graduates moved rather quickly to disperse any sense of sadness at her departure, and rolled into a rollicking, fun talk starting with her memories of graduating from Interboro High School in 1964.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3560\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/UHSGrad2011-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3560\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3560 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"UHSGrad2011-2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/UHSGrad2011-2-300x265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unionville-Chadds Ford Superintendent of Schools Sharon Parker speaks during Tuesday&#39;s commencement.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was a steamy, drippy night,\u201d she said, after invoking the old \u201cdark and stormy night\u201d joke. \u201cWe wore rented gowns of wool. They bore the stains and smells of those who graduated before us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She spoke a bit about the nature of youth and admitted that even now, she still feels like she\u2019s still 18 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of you will always be 18,\u201d Parker said. \u201cThose around you will tell you you need to grow up. But&#8230;everyday I look in the mirror, I find myself a bit shocked to see the face looking back. The hair that was once blonde is now grey and gravity has not been kind to me\u2026.but I know the sound of my laughter and of my beating heart have not changed from when I was 18.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She cited Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cForever Young\u201d and read some of the lyrics to the pop classic and ended with: \u201cToday a community sings of you,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd you are the pride of Unionville-Chadds Ford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parker left the stage to loud, sustained applause.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Savy Leiser was the first of three students to speak and spent some time looking at a letter she had written to her future self while still in middle school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected to own a DeLorean,\u201d she told the audience, noting that Back to the Future had been her favorite movie \u2014 which featured the silver-bodied sports car as a time machine. The letter, Leiser suggested, was its own sort of time machine, serving as a reminder of how much she had changed and grown during her high school years.<\/p>\n<p>Max Berger took things in another direction, having a lot of fun with his speech.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3558\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/UHSGrad2011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3558\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3558 \" style=\"border: 2px solid navy; margin: 4px;\" title=\"UHSGrad2011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/UHSGrad2011-300x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the Unionville Class of 2011 line up to receive their diplomas. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is what we all dreamed of,\u201d he said. Being up here on the stage, wrapped in a blue table cloth, wearing a square hat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berger made light of various school issues, from parking to the construction dust and dislocation, but said he valued his time at Unionville and hoped he could give his own kids the same sort of experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want my children to grow up in a community like this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kacey Stewart continued the construction jokes with his speech, \u201clike our school, we\u2019re all under construction.
