Friends would come from near and far to pay their respects, share some memories and say goodbye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That\u2019s the situation facing the Tin Angel (20 South Second Street, Philadelphia, 215-928-0770, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinangel.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/www.tinangel.com<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Tin Angel will close the room at its current location on Olde City on February 4, 2017. Owner Donal McCoy and booker Larry Goldfarb will continue operating the Tin Angel at a larger venue later in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the course of the last 25 years, the Tin Angel has presented shows by a diverse group of musicians including Joan Baez, Donovan, Neko Case, Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco, Shelby Lynne and Roseanne Cash. The venue even hosted a show by actress Milla Jovovich in 1994 when she released an album called \u201cThe Divine Comedy\u201d under the name Milla.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For the last few weeks, acts have returned to play the Tin Angel one last time. The final stretch begins on January 20 with a show by Dar Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ll be performing solo at Friday night\u2019s show,\u201d said Williams, during a phone interview Wednesday morning from her home in New York\u2019s Hudson Valley. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be me saying goodbye to the Tin Angel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think that everybody Larry (Goldfarb) asked to play this final run said yes. We all have good memories of the Tin Angel. It\u2019s one of the first places we played. It\u2019s really a nice place to have a gig. It\u2019s a beautiful small venue. For a lot of artists, the Tin Angel was the first place to introduce yourself to the Philadelphia audience. It was incredible \u2013 a beautiful entrance to a great music scene.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Williams has fond memories \u2013 and a vivid recollection \u2013 of the first time she played the cozy venue in Olde City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI first played the Tin Angel in 1994 right after my album \u2018The Honesty Room\u2019 came out,\u201d said Williams. \u201cI was opening for Livingston Taylor. I remember the audience going wild when I played \u2018When I Was a Boy\u2019 \u2013 and Livingston Taylor being very supportive. It was a lightning bolt. When people in Philly get excited, they really get excited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI love the opportunities that Larry has given me at the tin Angel. He was like a shepherd. Having played there 23 years ago, it\u2019s an honor to be playing now. And, it\u2019s Inauguration Day and the day before the march. I\u2019m excited.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The remaining shows will feature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinangel.com\/event\/1398637-jeffrey-gaines-philadelphia\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Jeffrey Gaines (January 21), <\/span><\/a>Citizen Cope (January 25-27), Kenn Kweder (January 28), \u201cFarewell to Tin Angel: A Benefit for <a href=\"http:\/\/soundgirls.org\/\"><span class=\"s3\">Soundgirls.org<\/span><\/a>\u201d (January 31), Eric Bazilian and Wesley Stace: Au Renoir to the Tin Angel (February 1), The Hillbenders (February 2), Steve Forbert and Joe D\u2019Urso (February 3) and The Ben Vaughn Quintet with Special Guest Dan Montgomery (February 4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\">Video link for Dar Williams \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Se-nY2rEC6o?t=3\"><span class=\"s5\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Se-nY2rEC6o?t=3<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dar Williams\u2019 show at the Tin Angel will start at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over the years, there have been many great music acts from Canada that have been unable to establish themselves in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2994\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/arkells.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2994\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2994\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/arkells-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arkells<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are many possible reasons such as the disadvantageous monetary exchange rate for Canadians or the language barrier \u2013 ah-BOAT (about), OWL-you-min-ee-um (aluminum), DECK-ells (decals) and AY (eh?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Probably the biggest obstacle is conquering a country the size of America \u2013 the challenge of getting known across so many miles and in so many markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the young bands from north of the border that has been finding success in the states is Arkells, a popular Canadian rock band from Hamilton, Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Arkells have just started their 2017 North American tour dates with English folk troubadour Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls. The second show on the tour will be on January 20 at Fillmore Philadelphia (1100 Canal Street, Philadelphia, 215-309-0150, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefillmorephilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.thefillmorephilly.com<\/span><\/a>). The rockers from Ontario have already played a number of gigs in Philly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The tour is in support of Arkells\u2019 acclaimed fourth studio album, \u201cMorning Report,\u201d which was recently released via Last Gang Records. Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, My Morning Jacket), Tony\u00a0Hoffer (Beck, M83),\u00a0Brian West (Sia, AWOLNATION), and Gus van Go (The Stills, Wintersleep), the album features vocalist\/guitarist Max Kerman, guitarist Mike DeAngelis, bassist Nick Dika, keyboardist Anthony Carone and drummer Tim Oxford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOne of the hardest parts for Canadian bands becoming popular in America is getting people\u2019s attention,\u201d said Kerman, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from his home in Hamilton. \u201cYou have to be determined and keep at it. We\u2019ve had to keep putting in the work \u2013 touring and playing for people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cYou might play a city and have only 30-40 people at the (show). But, you come back and there are more people in the audience the next time \u2013 and the time after that. Philly is the best example. The first time we played there was at the North Star and there might have been 23 people there. The next time was at MilkBoy and there were 89. The last show we did in Philadelphia, the audience was up to 600.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Arkells became a band 10 years ago when they were students at McMaster University in Hamilton and have since become one of Canada\u2019s most successful rock bands. The band is named after Arkell Street near McMaster University where the young musicians lived and developed their musical sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNick, Mike and I met in the first week of school,\u201d said Kerman. \u201cI went to school specifically to profile people for a band. But, I did stay in school and get my degree. We were influenced by a lot of Canadian indie-rock bands like the Weakerthans and Wolf Parade &#8212; and by American bands like Wilco and the Strokes. That shaped our music. That\u2019s what we sounded like on our first record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs I\u2019ve gotten older, I\u2019ve learned to appreciate more kinds of music like R&amp;B, electronic and hip hop. My dad went to school in Detroit and was a DJ at Wayne State University. So, through him, I was exposed to a lot of Motown and classic rock.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Arkells released their debut album \u201cJackson Square\u201d in 2008 on Dine Alone Records. Their next two albums, which were on Universal Music Canada, were \u201cMichigan Left\u201d in 2011 and \u201cHigh Noon\u201d in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If the band stayed true to the chronological pattern it established for album releases, the next one wouldn\u2019t be due until 2017. Instead, Arkells deviated from the pattern and put out a new album in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded it at several different studios,\u201d said Kerman. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking for ways to keep it challenging. The old-school way of bunking down for two months &#8212; that seems dumb to me. I like to hop back-and-forth between studios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe did two songs at a one place in Los Angeles and five more at another studio in L.A. In December, producer Joe Chiccarelli flew to Toronto and did five songs with us there. We kept all 12 songs. Then, we got engineer Mark Needham to mix all the songs so they have a consistent feel. We trusted our gut with the way the songs were originally recorded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Arkells are hoping to continue to build on the success they achieved with their previous album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2014, the four-time JUNO Award-winning rock band released their third studio album, \u201cHigh Noon.\u201d \u00a0The album reached #1 on the Canadian iTunes chart and is now certified Gold in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At the 2015 JUNO Awards, Arkells won \u201cRock Album of the Year\u201d for \u201cHigh Noon\u201d as well as the award for \u201cGroup of the Year.\u201d This past October, they released their five-song digital EP, \u201cStudy Music (Songs From High Noon)\u201d which features acoustic interpretations of their #1 single, \u201cLeather Jacket,\u201d as well as their latest single \u201c11:11.\u201d Arkells were named the most played band on Alternative radio in Canada in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe new album is a bit different than what we\u2019ve done before,\u201d said Kerman. \u201cEach time we\u2019ve made an album, our musical palette has expanded. We were chasing different layers of textures for the keyboards and guitars along with loops, horns and gospel singers. The core of the song is what is most important \u2013 good melodies, a solid groove and relatable lyrics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s6\">Video link for Arkells &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VexuUr4pN-Q\"><span class=\"s7\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/VexuUr4pN-Q<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at the Fillmore, which also features Frank Turner, Murder By Death, and Will Varley, will start at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $28.50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fans of Wednesday 13 will be in for a double treat this weekend \u2013 and not just once but twice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/wednesday-13-tour-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2995\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/wednesday-13-tour-poster-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Wednesday 13, a metal music singer\/musician named Joseph Poole who has been releasing albums under a variety of names since 1994, is bringing his \u201cUndead Unplugged USA 2017 Tour\u201d to the area for shows on January 20 at Asylum 13 (1706 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, Delaware, 302-746-2213, <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/asylum13\"><span class=\"s3\">facebook.com\/asylum13<\/span><\/a>) and January 21 at the Grape Room (105 Grape Street, Manayunk, 215-930-0321, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graperoom.com\/\"><span class=\"s8\">www.graperoom.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The list of the rocker\u2019s bands and musical projects includes Psycho Opera, Maniac Spider Trash, Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13, Murderdolls, 1.4 Wednesday 13, Bourbon Crow and Gunfire 76. Wednesday rose to metal fame as one-half of The Murderdolls with Slipknot\u2019s Joey Jordison \u2013 a collaboration that produced two full-length records and one EP.<br \/>\nThe current tour features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/officialwednesday13\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Wednesday 13<\/span><\/a>\u2019s first-ever unplugged shows of the Northeast. As an added attraction, Wednesday 13\u2019s side project Bourbon Crow, which is touring the Northeast for the first-time ever, will provide direct support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBourbon Crow is just me and Rayen Belchere,\u201d said Wednesday 13, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon as the band travelled from Beckley, West Virginia to a gig in Baltimore, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wednesday 13 is the headline act and Bourbon Crow is the support act. But, the acts will not follow the normal protocol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe show starts with a Wednesday 13 set,\u201d said the North Carolina native who has called Los Angeles home for the last eight years. \u201cThe set will be an hour-and-a-half unplugged performance featuring songs from my whole career. I\u2019ll be talking about my career and the different songs and there will also be question-and-answer segments with the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe second part of the show will be a set by Bourbon Crow, which is more of a drinking act. It just works better that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bourbon Crow\u2019s third and most-recent album is \u201cOff the Wagon on the Rocks,\u201d which was released in 2015. Wednesday 13\u2019s 12th and most-recent album is<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Monsters of the Universe: Come out and Plague,\u201d which also was released in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fans of Wednesday 13 who are looking forward to a new album won\u2019t have much longer to wait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe new Wednesday 13 album is called \u2018Condolences\u2019 and hopefully it will be out by May,\u201d said Wednesday 13. \u201cI can\u2019t say too much about that because everything is still under wraps. I finished it in September last year. I recorded it in Connecticut with Chris Zeuss Harris producing it. I spent three months working on it in Portland, Oregon and Connecticut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s a full band album \u2013 and totally different than my last album. It\u2019s a whole new entity \u2013 but it still is relevant to what I\u2019ve done before. I think it\u2019s the best thing I\u2019ve ever done. It definitely has a darker tone \u2013 really violent. My last record was very different from previous recordings. It was my first concept record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some of the songs from that album will make it into the current live set \u2013 along with a lot more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI cover everything from my career,\u201d said Wednesday 13. \u201cI tell stories. Every night is different. I have a list of songs and stories. I take questions from fans and that often leads into other directions. It\u2019s entertaining. He was a good friend and a great musician. I had no idea he had any medical issues. But, like all of us, we\u2019re getting older. Still, it was very unexpected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe sent me an e-mail a few weeks ago about a show we did last year at the Ardmore Music Hall when we were sitting around and he and Richie sang this amazing doo-wop song with Tommy Conwell and Richard Bush. I said to Richie \u2013 how cool would it be to do that in our show. Losing Richie hit me like a ton of bricks. We begrudgingly move on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For the last 36 years, Uosikkinen has been the drummer for the Hooters, one of Philadelphia\u2019s all-time favorite bands. For his In the Pocket project \u2014 both live and in the studio \u2014 Uosikkinen uses a revolving lineup of Philadelphia\u2019s most celebrated musicians to perform covers of tunes from Philly\u2019s rich rock music history<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen I produce any song for In the Pocket, I grab a cool group of guys and do sessions,\u201d said Uosikkinen. \u201cI do it old school with everybody playing together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The In The Pocket lineup for this show features Zou Zou Mansour (Soraia), Fran Smith, Jr (The Hooters), Wally Smith (Smash Palace, Crosstown Traffic), horns by Jay Davidson, Dave Kershner, and Jim Verdeur, Richard Bush (The A\u2019s), Steve Butler (Smash Palace), Tommy Conwell (The Young Rumblers), Greg Davis (Beru Revue), Joey DiTullio (JDT), Pete Donnelly (Figgs, NRBQ), Kenn Kweder, Jeffrey Gaines, Buddy Cash, Ben Arnold, Cliff Hillis, Graham Alexander, Pete Donnelly and Uosikkinen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re working on a set list for the gig,\u201d said Uosikkinen. \u201cEverybody by playing will have some sort of tribute to Richie. Whatever Charlie wants to do, we\u2019ll do. We might do the song in this show. With Kweder \u2013 who knows?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe two songs before that were the Soul Survivors\u2019 version of \u2018Backstabbers\u2019 and \u2018Walkin\u2019 on the Water\u2019 from Tommy Conwell. I chose it because it\u2019s an autobiographical song for Tommy Conwell. It\u2019s early, brash Tommy Conwell from the time of his first indie record and his album on Columbia. And, the story of the song is terrific.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWalkin\u2019 on the Water\u201d was the 13th\u00a0installment of In the Pocket\u2019s series of re-imagining Philly music classics. The other classics are \u201cFall in Philadelphia,\u201d \u201cBeat Up Guitar,\u201d \u201cA Woman\u2019s Got the Power,\u201d \u201cI Saw the Light,\u201d\u00a0\u201cAll My Mondays,\u201d \u201cOpen My Eyes,\u201d \u201cYou Can\u2019t Sit Down,\u201d\u00a0\u201cSoon You\u2019ll Be Gone,\u201d \u201cChange Reaction,\u201d \u201cDisco Inferno,\u201d \u201cPunk Rock Girl\u201d and \u201cI Ain\u2019t Searchin\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe show at the World Caf\u00e9 Live is going to be cool,\u201d said Uosikkinen. \u201cBen Arnold will be with us.
