{"id":33335,"date":"2017-01-11T11:35:12","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T16:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=33335"},"modified":"2017-01-11T11:35:35","modified_gmt":"2017-01-11T16:35:35","slug":"uhs-students-reach-top-32-in-international-debate-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=33335","title":{"rendered":"UHS students reach Top 32 in international debate competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/UNI_BICF_Logo-1CSpt-DkBlu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2916\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/UNI_BICF_Logo-1CSpt-DkBlu-301x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>EAST MARLBOROUGH \u2013 Students from Unionville High School in<b> <\/b>have advanced to the \u201cTop 32\u201d round of the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sponsored by the Brewer Foundation and New York University, the IPPF is the first and only debate competition that gives high school students around the world the opportunity to engage in written and oral debates on issues of public policy.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By advancing, the students remain eligible to win a $10,000 grand prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to the IPPF Finals in New York City on May 6, 2017.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThese students have excelled at the IPPF\u2019s unique test of research, analytical, writing and advocacy skills,\u201d said William A. Brewer III, chairman of the Brewer Foundation and a founder of the IPPF. \u201cThey now advance to the Round of 32 \u2013 the next written round of the competition and a step closer to the IPPF Finals.\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This year, hundreds of teams<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">submitted qualifying round essays affirming or negating the 2016-17 IPPF topic,<i> \u201cResolved: The obligation to provide safe haven for refugees should outweigh a government\u2019s right to control its borders.\u201d<\/i> Those essays were reviewed by a committee, which determined the \u201cRound of 64\u201d teams based on the overall quality of each 2,800-word essay.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In November, the\u00a0 \u201cRound of 64\u201d teams then began a single-elimination, written debate competition. Each team was assigned a position (affirmative or negative) and then volleyed papers back and forth with another team via email. A panel of judges reviewed the essays and selected the winning teams. In that round, Unionville High School advanced over Fraser Heights Secondary School from Surrey, BC, Canada<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u201cTop 32\u201d round begins immediately. Unionville High School will compete in a written debate against La Ca\u00f1ada High School from California. The top 32 teams include 26 U.S. teams from 17 U.S. states. There are six international teams from schools in China, Czech Republic, Kingdom of Bahrain, Nepal, Slovakia and Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The winning teams will be announced on February 13, and will proceed to the \u201cSweet 16\u201d round. On March 23, the \u201cElite 8\u201d teams will be announced. Those teams will travel to New York City on an all-expenses-paid trip to the IPPF Finals in New York City. The Finals will take place on May 6, 2017, at the Harold Pratt House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The IPPF Finals give students the opportunity to participate in oral debates in front of some of the world\u2019s\u00a0 foremost experts in debate, business, law and politics.
