The Pittsburgh-based rockers have built a well-established fan base of die-hard followers &#8212; fans who will put everything else aside when Rusted Root plays in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, when Rusted Root visits the Delaware Valley for a show on August 28 at the Keswick Theater (291 N. Keswick Avenue, Glenside, 215-572-7650,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.keswicktheatre.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.keswicktheatre.com<\/span><\/a>), the house will be packed. It can be Sunday, Monday or Thursday &#8212; summer, autumn or winter &#8212; the fans will be there and the house will be rocking whenever Rusted Root takes the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some bands get excited when they enter their second decade. Rusted Root sailed past that marker a long time ago and now is entering its second quarter-century. Rusted Root has a long and interesting history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Actually, the veteran group of musicians has cemented its legacy as one of the premier rock bands to come from Pennsylvania. The group, which still includes three of the original five members, continues to write, record and tour. And, it still calls Pittsburgh home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The trio of founding members includes\u00a0Michael Glabicki (lead vocals,\u00a0guitar,\u00a0harmonica,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mandolin\"><span class=\"s2\">mandolin<\/span><\/a>), Patrick Norman (bass guitar,\u00a0backing vocals,\u00a0percussion) and Liz Berlin (percussion,\u00a0backing vocals). Rounding out the quintet are Preach Freedom (percussion, backing vocals) and Dirk Miller (guitar, backing vocals).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In honor of its 25th Anniversary, Rusted Root embarked on an extensive national tour to support the current release \u201cThe Movement,\u201d which is described by Glabicki as \u201can extremely joyous recording with seriously deep undertones.\u201d \u201cThe Movement\u201d was released on Shanachie Records in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rusted Root, which is known for its fusion of acoustic, rock and world, has recorded eight albums and sold over three million records worldwide. The band\u2019s music has been featured in films such as \u201cIce Age,\u201d \u201cTwister\u201d and \u201cMatilda\u201d and TV shows such as \u201cAlly McBeal,\u201d \u201cNew Girl\u201d and \u201cCharmed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve had this lineup together for over five years now,\u201d said Glabicki, during a recent phone interview from his home in the western part of the state. \u201cColter (Harper), our other guitarist, left after the last album to teach school in Ghana. Preach has been our drummer for six years. Before that, he was our percussionist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While \u201cThe Movement\u201d was more of a spiritual, highly-creative work, Rusted Root\u2019s next album looks to be heading in a different direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been working on our next album,\u201d said Glabicki. \u201cWe\u2019ve been performing a lot of the music live &#8212; fleshing it out for live audiences. We took 70 songs and narrowed it to 12-15 for the album. There are 10 that are definitely going to make it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u201cThere are different vignettes throughout the song instead of a whole song being just one vignette. The background vocals are laid out differently. And, I\u2019ve been writing the blueprints for the arrangements first. Each song is its own entity and there is a lot of variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSome songs are about heartache &#8212; powerful explosive ballads. One is an intimate spiritual song. Other songs go from that to a faster groove. I\u2019m still writing four or five songs now and seeing about the blueprint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018The Movement\u2019 was a celebration of what we learned over the first 25 years. The new album is the start of the next 25 years. I can see the band being together for that long. I don\u2019t see why not. The band keeps getting better. There are more landscapes to explore musically. And, we\u2019re still getting bliss from the audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rusted Root\u2019s first major success came with the band\u2019s 1994 album \u201cWhen I Woke,\u201d which went platinum, and its breakout song was a catchy tune called \u201cSend Me On My Way.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been playing that song so long that it has a life of its own \u2014 we just follow it where it goes,\u201d said Glabicki. \u201cWe\u2019ve been getting great responses with the new songs. It\u2019s a little scary because the sound is different \u2014 but the crowd gets it. The grooves are more organic and moving. Brett performed her show \u201cWe\u2019ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered\u201d at the Downey Theatre in Downey, California &#8212; the former home of Richard and Karen Carpenter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, Berting Brett is bringing her impressive act to the area for a concert on August 25 at Sellersville Theater (24 West Temple Avenue, Sellersville, 215-257-5808,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.st94.com\/\"><span class=\"s5\">www.st94.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters Remembered\u201d is the definitive concert show celebrating the music of one of the most successful recording acts of all time.\u00a0Berting Brett, who is accompanied by a seven-piece Nashville band directed by Harry Sharpe, re-creates the Carpenters\u2019 original sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Originally from Saskatchewan, Berting Brett trained in opera and theater on scholarship at\u00a0Dickinson State University\u00a0in the U.S. and is an award-winning graduate of the Music Theatre program at\u00a0Sheridan College\u00a0in Ontario, Canada. Berting Brett began her career performing in musical theater.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She also performed in murder mysteries, corporate industrial shows, with an improv troupe, as a background vocalist in studio and on tour, and as a voice-over artist. Berting Brett has toured the world performing the American\u00a0Songbook and jazz repertoire in her own cabaret shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Then, she found her true calling as a vocalist who could accomplish the difficult task of singing Carpenters\u2019 songs just like Karen Carpenter sang them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was doing pop shows and people told me that I sounded like Karen Carpenter,\u201d said Berting Brett, during a phone interview Monday from her home in Connecticut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThen, my husband Mark (producer Mark Brett) heard me singing \u2018Merry Christmas Darling.\u2019 I told him I always had a dream of doing a Karen Carpenter show and he said &#8212; let\u2019s do it. I tried it out at a small show in Toronto and it was a great success. We definitely thought we were on to something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It didn\u2019t take long for the musical couple to turn the dream into a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe started searching around for a music director,\u201d said Berting Brett. \u201cThe Carpenters\u2019 sound was very special so we knew we had to find the right person to be the music director. We found Harry Sharpe, who is based in Nashville.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sharpe\u2019s career in Nashville began years ago when he toured with Eddy Raven playing piano and singing background vocals.\u00a0 He did the same with Tanya Tucker and Donna Summer. Sharpe was Wynonna Judd\u2019s music director for six of the 11 years he worked with her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMark, Harry and I hand-picked this wonderful group of musicians,\u201d said Bering Brett. \u201cFor the last three years, we\u2019ve travelled all across the country doing shows. One of the most exciting shows was the one we just did in Downey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Singing Carpenters\u2019 songs and nailing them every time is no easy task for any vocalist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhat Karen Carpenter does vocally is tremendous,\u201d said Berting Brett. \u201cShe makes it seem so easy but it is very difficult. She sang without any affectations. There were no tricks. It was always about that rich, warm tone. She had such a great gift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve Only Just Begun: Carpenters<i> <\/i>Remembered\u201d is an intimate behind-the-scenes portrait of the pop music phenomenon that defined an era. We all grew up in western Massachusetts in the Northampton area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After high school, the four musicians relocated to Boston where Somos was born.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur first show was three-and-a-half years ago,\u201d said Fiorentino. \u201cIt was a house show in Alston, a Boston suburb. We\u2019ve only had one line-up change since then &#8212; with our drummer. But, now our original drummer Mike Benoit is back in the band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Somos has released two albums &#8212; \u201cTemple of Plenty\u201d in 2014 on Tiny Engines Records and \u201cFirst Day Back\u201d this year on Hopeless Records.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the band\u2019s bio, \u201cSomos are as no-frills and trend-averse as it gets. The Boston band works in catchy, passionate three-minute rock songs recorded with too much punch to be lo-fi, too melodically contoured to be punk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2018\u201dWe put out \u2018Temple of Plenty\u2019 a year-and-a-half after we formed,\u201d said Fiorentino. \u201cWe spent a year of writing and re-writing before we went in the studio. Phil and I bring the skeleton of a song and the melody. Then, Justin and Mike help flesh it out at practice. I\u2019m the one who writes all the lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe did three full U.S. tours supporting \u2018Temple of Plenty.\u2019 Our second record &#8212; \u2018First Day Back\u2019 &#8212; came out this year in February. We recorded it last summer in Haverhill, Massachusetts with producer\/engineer Jay Maas. He was the guy we really wanted to work with. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Fiorentino, \u201cWe are very proud of \u2018First Day Back\u2019. Musically, I think it represents a step forward and highlights a number of new influences and styles. In terms of lyrics, I attempted to incorporate themes of alienation and struggle but also resistance and resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe live in trying times, but it&#8217;s important to keep in mind that the immense challenges we face as a society exist alongside green shoots of hope. This record is dedicated to all revolutionaries and freedom fighters the world over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new songs are finally getting to see the light of day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t play any of the songs from \u2018First Day Back\u2019 in our live show prior to recording them,\u201d said Fiorentino. \u201cIn our shows, we always want to play songs people know. We did our first tour for the new album back in March. We both majored in cultural studies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Shondes are a cultural blend all their own. They are a pop, punk, feminist, rock band with Jewish influences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe name of the band is Yiddish word meaning shames or disgraces,\u201d said Oberman. \u201cIt\u2019s a nod to our Jewish heritage. Also, it\u2019s a punk rock thing to name our band \u2018The Disgraces.\u2019 We have a feminist punk background &#8212; and we\u2019re all queer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On their website, the Shondes describe their ensemble as \u201ca rock band from Brooklyn, NY, who play Bikini Kill-meets-Bruce Springsteen-style sing-along anthems for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Oberman said, \u201cWe\u2019ve had different line-ups over the years but it\u2019s always been Louisa and me. The current line-up is the real line-up. We\u2019ve been together for two years now. This is our second tour. And, \u2018Brighton\u2019 was the first album we all recorded together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAll four of us live in Brooklyn. \u2018Brighton\u2019 is our fifth album and our third with Exotic Fever. It\u2019s really good label that is run by Katy Otto &#8212; a small feminist label. We recorded the album in February in Brooklyn &#8212; at Studio G with Tony Maimone, who is a member of veteran avant-garage band Pere Ubu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018Brighton\u2019 has the Shondes\u2019 sound,\u201d said Oberman. \u201cIt\u2019s not a huge shift from our previous albums but, as with all our albums, it is a progression. It\u2019s more refined. We\u2019re continually working on our songwriting. Courtney and Alex have brought us to as new level of musicianship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unlike in the restaurants and on the beaches of Brighton, no Russian words can be heard on \u201cBrighton.\u201d And, despite the band\u2019s Jewish heritage, they have not recorded any songs in Hebrew or Yiddish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Jewish influence &#8212; it\u2019s not something we actively try to do,\u201d said Oberman. \u201cBut, you can hear some traces of liturgical Jewish melodies in our music &#8212; and the joy of klezmer. We decided to come to Philadelphia seven years ago and moved to Kensington.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band\u2019s first release, \u201cOldermost EP\u201d (2010), was recorded shortly after three founding members of the band packed their bags and left the Shenendoah Valley to live together in Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2015, the band released \u201cIt\u2019s Difficult To Know Anything At All,\u201d which was recorded in their Philadelphia studio. The five-song collection followed their full-length debut \u201cI Live Here Now\u201d (2014), which was produced by Jonathan Low, who has also done albums for Sharon Van Etten, Daniel Rossen, Kurt Vile, and Mr. Twin Sister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRight now, we\u2019re spacing out some singles instead of working on an album,\u201d said Bucknum. \u201cWe released \u2018Honey With Tea\u2019 two weeks ago. We have a new song \u00a0&#8212; \u2018Finally Unsure\u2019 &#8212; ready to be released next Wednesday and then we\u2019ll follow with another single two weeks after that.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHoney with Tea\u201d highlights Bucknum\u2019s vocal delivery which oscillates between semi-theatrical energetic bursts to gentle, sugary crooning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur live shows are super passionate but, when we get in the studio, we turn into minutia-loving music nerds,\u201d said Bucknum. \u201cWe recorded all our music at our home studio in Brewerytown. It\u2019s really nice because it allows us to take our time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe three singles were recorded really slowly over time. A lot of the guys in the band are still working day jobs so we\u2019ll spend two nights a week in the studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis recording project releases things incrementally instead of making an album and seeing if people will listen to a whole album. People aren\u2019t really listening to full albums anymore. It\u2019s all part of a larger project. There is a big age difference so I\u2019m presenting her music she\u2019s not familiar with. \u00a0She also has her own influences. The hybrid of our two influences makes us sound like we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Wind and The Wave signed to RCA Records in 2013 and the duo\u2019s debut album \u201cFrom the Wreckage\u201d was released on August 5, 2014. Billed by many critics as one of the best albums of the year, \u201cFrom the Wreckage\u201d featured a rootsy tone that encompassed everything from indie-folk, to alt-country to blues-rock to Southern psychedelia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to Baker, \u201cPeople really treasure that album. We got tons of letters from people saying it saved their life. They\u2019re people who are conflicted and searching and they connect with Patty\u2019s lyrics more than anything. With the new album, we felt some bit of an obligation to deliver that again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band\u2019s cover of \u201cChasing Cars\u201d by Snow Patrol was featured in season 11of \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy.\u201d The placement propelled the song to the number one spot on Shazam\u2019s USA future hits chart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The band signed with Island Records in March 2016 and released the single \u201cGrand Canyon\u201d on May 13, 2016. The Wind and the The Wave\u2019s first album with Island Records, which is due out later this year, is titled \u201cHappiness Is Not a Place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI produced our first record,\u201d maids Baker. \u201cWhen we started this record, I was pretty burned out. We did 180 shows a year for the first two years and, when we weren\u2019t on the road, I was producing records for other artists. I wanted to take a break and spend more time with my family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo, we looked for an outside producer. Butch (Walker) was high on both our lists of possible producers. Plus, he was a guy who knew what I was going through and how to handle it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The new album was recorded live by Walker, a songwriter and musician who has produced records for such artists as Weezer and Panic! At The Disco. Where \u201cFrom The Wreckage\u201d was manicured and polished because of \u00a0Baker\u2019s meticulous production, \u201cHappiness Is Not A Place\u201d is rawer and rougher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe cut the album at Butch\u2019s studio in L.A.,\u201d said Baker. \u201cWe had 30 days booked for the studio and finished it in nine days. Most of it is live. It\u2019s raw. It\u2019s urgent. Butch wanted the performances to sound like we were playing the song for the first time &#8212; and we were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur debut album was on RCA and then RCA released an album of our cover songs. Patty and I both have good publishing deals and we had 40 placements from our last record. We made the new record under RCA and then they dropped us when we were done. We shopped around for five or six months and then found Island. \u00a0Island is a good label &#8212; and has been for a long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe used to be just a duo but for our live shows now, we carry a drummer and a guitarist. Our new record is so live-sounding that we found that we needed more people on stage. When people hear our band, they love it. They convened for the first time in 2015 for their debut record\u00a0\u201cFrom the Vine,\u201d<br \/>\na live album recorded at the Painted Bride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The music of the Fresh Cut Orchestra is an eclectic blend of \u201cstraight ahead\u201d jazz, contemporary classical, progressive rock, hip hop, and modern electronica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fresh Cut Orchestra is co-led by trumpeter Josh Lawrence, bassist Jason Fraticelli and drummer Anwar Marshall, all equally lending their compositional voices to the band. The other seven members are Tim Conley (guitar and Ableton Live), Brent White (trombone),<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Francois Zayas (percussion), Brian Marsella (piano), Matt Davis (guitar), Mark Allen (saxophone) and Mike Cemprola (saxophone).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe three of them &#8212; Josh, Jason and Anwar &#8212; got put together by the Painted Bride Art Center\u2019s Lenny Seidman,\u201d said Conley, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from Fraticelli\u2019s house in Phoenixville. \u201cHe wanted them to form a band and create new music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Seidman brought the three bandleaders together and gave them funding to produce an original work for large ensemble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEach of the three composed music and hand-picked the members of the band for what was supposed to be a one-off show,\u201d said Conley, a Bucks County native who now lives in Los Angeles. \u201cI had played with Jason in different bands for years. I had also played with Anwar and Francois. Philly has a tight-knit music community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Their first show in October 2012 was a sellout &#8212; and a rousing success. In 2013, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts awarded the band a residency. At the Kimmel, the three leaders wrote and performed a formidable array of new works &#8212; some involving a vocalist, Joanna Pascale &#8212; plus video art projections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In November 2015,the band performed \u00a0\u201cLife Mosaic: Reflection on Birth, Adolescence, Maturing, and Death.\u201d <i>\u00a0<\/i>The piece, composed by Lawrence, Fraticelli, Marshall, and Conley, was written during their term as Jazz Residency Artists at the Kimmel Center in the 2013-14 Season and received its World Premiere in June 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fresh Cut Orchestra also received a Pew Center for Arts &amp; Heritage grant that brought the band members into the studio where they recorded \u201cFrom the Vine,\u201d along with enough songs for another full-length.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On August 26, Ropeadope Records is releasing FCO\u2019s \u201cMind Behind Closed Eyes,\u201d a highly varied collection of pieces from the three composers. The album also marks the recorded d\u00e9but of Fraticelli on\u00a0cuatro, a Puerto Rican stringed instrument similar to the Cuban\u00a0tres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe songs on \u201cMind Behind Closed Eyes\u201d were recorded in the original session,\u201d said Conley. \u201cWe recorded a lot of songs and there were tracks that didn\u2019t make it to the first album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe also added a few new things to the new album. Now, we\u2019re going into the studio of Friday to record \u2018Life Mosaic.\u2019 We have rehearsals all day Thursday and we\u2019ll record all day Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe show at the Painted Bride is a release party for \u2018Mind Behind Closed Eyes.\u2019 There will be two sets and the show will focus on songs from the new album along with tracks from the first album and \u2018Mosaic.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe compositions in this band are pretty through-composed. But, every song has parts that feature soloists or parts where the band can improvise.
