Then, he will be back in the area August 16 \u00a0to headline a show at the Eagleview Summer Concerts on the Square\u00a0at Eagleview Town Center (Wharton Boulevard, Exton, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ineagleview.com\/\"><span class=\"s3\">www.ineagleview.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sover, who grew up in Philly and attended William Penn High, has been making music for awhile. But, it has only been recently that he has started taking his career to a higher level. His show at Steel City marks the release of his debut album \u201cSongs for a Renegade.\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cRight now, I\u2019m only doing one-off shows,\u201d said Sover, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Philadelphia. \u201cNow that the album is out, we are planning a tour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe opened for Peace Creeps at Steel City back in November. This time, they\u2019re opening for me. The show Saturday night will be my CD release party &#8212; and the day the album is officially released.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sover became fascinated with the guitar at age 13. His father taught him the French song \u201cLa Maladie d\u2019Amour\u201d and Sover took it from there. He taught himself how to play guitar, how to write songs and, eventually, how to sing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and my family moved to Philadelphia when I was 10,\u201d said Sover. \u201cI was exposed to music when I was really young.\u00a0 I had musicians on both sides of my family. My whole life I\u2019ve had access to the guitar. With guitar, I started really knowing what I was doing when I was around 15. At the same time, I was playing electric bass at my church.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sover says his music doesn\u2019t fit into one particular genre. It includes elements of \u201cblues and rock with a dash of everything else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">He has been influenced by artists in multiple genres including Bob Marley, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dwight Yoakam, Jay-Z, Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy and others) and Jimi Hendrix.\u00a0Songwriting has been an outlet for him to express his struggles and passions and he believes that his songs resonate with his fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sover first attracted serious attention when he won the 2015 Hard Rock Rising competition at Philadelphia\u2019s Hard Rock Cafe. His development is due in large part to his band, which is comprised of three Philly veterans with extensive resumes \u2013 bassist and album co-producer Garry Lee, guitarist Allen James and drummer Tom Walling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Lee, who has played with June Rich and The Rhythm Cats Revue, is currently the bassist in the Deb Callahan Band. Lee assembled the band for Sover &#8212; enlisting James and Walling, his long-time band mates in the Deb Callahan Band. Their cohesiveness as a unit enabled Sover to develop as an artist and take his music to the next level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe band all started with Gary Allen,\u201d said Sover. \u201cI played an open mic at the Grape Room and Gary was doing sound that night. Garry really helped me get my career going. I needed top level musicians and he brought them. It\u2019s been amazing working with Garry and I\u2019ve really learned lot from these guys. Allen is one of my favorite guitarists ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sover\u2019s favorite guitarist is a player who tops many musicians\u2019 \u201cfavorite guitarist\u201d list &#8212; Jimi Hendrix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJimi Hendrix is one of my major influences,\u201d said Sover. \u201cI\u2019m really influenced by a lot of the music from that era. The music of the 60s spoke about things. It was very political.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those influences can definitely be heard on \u201cSongs for a Renegade.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded the album at two studios &#8212; one in Center City Philadelphia and one in Mount Airy,\u201d said Sover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe worked on it last November and stopped recording at the beginning of this year. When we finished, we had nine originals and one cover. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 day of show. For the longest time, its sole claim to fame musically was that it was the birthplace of the Gibb Brothers &#8212; better known as the Bee Gees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That changed about 10 years ago with the emergence of Back Door Slam &#8212; a young trio that played a scorching style of power-packed blues. The group released its debut album \u201cRoll Away\u201d in the states in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The driving force of that now-defunct band was vocalist\/guitar ace Davey Knowles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Early in 2009, Knowles released a statement from the band, stating that they had split up, and the band\u2019s members were going to begin to pursue their own separate careers in music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Knowles, who will headline a show at Hard Rock Caf\u00e9 (1113 Market Street, Philadelphia, 215- 238-1000, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrcphillymusic.com\/\"><span class=\"s4\">www.hrcphillymusic.com<\/span><\/a>) on August 13, released \u201cComing Up for Air,\u201d his first album on his own, in 2009. He followed with \u201cThe Outsider\u201d album in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Knowles has announced the release of a new studio album \u201cThree Miles From Avalon\u201d on October 14.\u00a0 It is a collection of new songs marking a return to his roots and the sounds that first ignited his passion for music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy last album &#8212; \u2018The Outsider\u2019 &#8212; took a long time to record,\u201d said Knowles, during a phone interview Tuesday afternoon from a tour stop in Charlotte, North Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe new album was done the old-fashioned way. We recorded it all to tape with no overdubs. It was all analog and all live. It returns to the blues rock energy I loved as a kid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When he was still just a child, Knowles was exposed to blues music through his family\u2019s music collection. Over the years, he has become a die-hard blues fan who has fed himself a diet of music by blues artists such as Albert King, Otis Rush and Muddy Waters \u2013 as well as British blues practitioners like Eric Clapton and Rory Gallagher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a real band playing live in a room,\u201d said Knowles. \u201cIt all just came together in the studio. I wanted to go back and make a record that had that real feel &#8212; and that live intensity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMy favorite sounding records are certainly older ones, recorded to tape, with minimal fuss or overdubs. I wanted that lovely warm, vintage sound that only tape and glowing tubes can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI recorded it in Chicago at Shirk Studio. Everyone in my band is based in Chicago &#8212; and so am I. We did the whole thing in three days &#8212; with no pre-production. I have a four-piece band and we\u2019ve been together for two years. We\u2019ve clocked a lot of miles as a band and we\u2019re used to playing with each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A raw, vintage sound is evident in the album\u2019s opening two tracks, the hard-driving \u201cAin\u2019t Much Of Nothing\u201d and the live favorite, \u201cWhat You\u2019re Made Of,\u201d an homage to one of his musical heroes Rory Gallagher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">His fans will get a preview of a lot of the songs at this weekend\u2019s show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m playing a lot of the new songs on is tour,\u201d said Knowles. \u201cWe\u2019ve played all but one of the new songs live.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Davy Knowles &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PjIPuLEAke8\"><span class=\"s4\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/PjIPuLEAke8<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show at the Hard Rock Caf\u00e9, which has Pawnshop Roses and Modern Colour as openers, will start at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1456\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/junior-brown.jpg\" alt=\"junior brown\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>On August 14, the Ardmore Music Hall (23 East Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore, 610-649-8389,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ardmoremusic.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.ardmoremusic.com<\/span><\/a>) will present Junior Brown &#8212; a veteran country singer-guitarist who is a true original. Brown is known for his distinctive baritone voice and his double-necked \u201cguit-steel,\u201d which is a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI always played both,\u201d said Brown, during a phone interview Wednesday morning from his home in Branson, Missouri. \u201cI played a steel guitar on legs alternating with a regular guitar. So, I decided I\u2019d design an instrument that combined both. Michael Stevens, a guitar maker from Alpine, Texas, worked with me in designing it and making it. Now, I\u2019m working on designing a guitar that combines a regular guitar with a pedal steel guitar. I\u2019ve had a number of \u2018guit-steel\u2019 guitars over the years. I gave away a few of them and I only have one right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brown has been listening to and making music ever since he was very young &#8212; and his tastes are very diverse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI have trouble listening to one certain kind of music all night long,\u201d said Brown. \u201cI like a variety of music. Our family travelled and moved around alt when I was growing up so I heard different regional music. I lived in Maryland until age 12 and heard country music there. Then, we moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico so I was listening to the whole mariachi thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPiano was my first instrument but I didn\u2019t take to it like I did to guitar. The first time I picked up a guitar &#8212; I knew. I found an old guitar in my grandparents\u2019 attic when I was five.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBy the time I was eight, I had an acoustic Silvertone guitar from Sears. That\u2019s what got me started. Singing didn\u2019t impress me at first. It was all about guitar. Music was something I always wanted to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brown eventually moved to Austin, Texas to pursue a career in music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI started recording with the Last Mile Ramblers,\u201d said Brown. \u201cI was also a side musician. I spent a lot of nights playing in hardcore, honky-tonk truck stops.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Brown made his first album in1984. His most recent studio album is \u201cVol.10.\u201d which came out in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI recorded \u2018Vol. 10\u2019 four years ago,\u201d said Brown. \u201cI\u2019m working on a new album now and it will be all original songs. Music is all about telling stories. The band formed in 1972 and has been going strong ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Styx is touring again this summer and will visit the area on August 15 for a show at the American Music Theatre (2425 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, 800-0 648-4102, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amtshows.com\/\"><span class=\"s4\">www.AMTshows.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Styx\u2019 long list of hit singles includes \u201cLady,\u201d \u201cCome Sail Away,\u201d \u201cBabe,\u201d \u201cThe Best of Times,\u201d \u201cToo Much Time on My Hands,\u201d \u201cShow Me the Way,\u201d \u201cRenegade,\u201d \u201cBoat on the River\u201d and, of course, \u201cMr. Roboto.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The current Styx lineup includes Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James \u201cJY\u201d Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums) and Ricky Phillips (bass) \u2014 along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo. Shaw and Young have been with the band since its start in Chicago in 1970 while Gowan and Sucherman joined the group prior to the turn of the century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe are endless road warriors,\u201d said Phillips, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon. \u201cWe\u2019re on the road 200 days a year and play well over 100 shows. It\u2019s a good problem to have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019m the newest member of the band and I\u2019ll start my 14th year in Styx in September. It\u2019s a great group of musicians that complement each other. There is a lot of great talent. But, more importantly, there is this great symbiotic relationship we have. All the parts are there. Stylistically, it all melds. Everything clicks all the time. It\u2019s just a great band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen we\u2019re not out on the road, we don\u2019t see each other much because we spend time with our families. In reality, we see each other more every year that we see our families. It\u2019s funny. We come off the road, do the family thing for awhile and then &#8212; bam, we\u2019re back on the road.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At this stage of the band\u2019s career, Styx does not place a big emphasis on recording new material &#8212; for good reason. If Styx waits to release something new until a time when its fans are tired of hearing \u201cCome Sail Away,\u201d \u201cThe Best of Times,\u201d \u201cShow Me the Way\u201d and \u201cMr. Roboto,\u201d there might never be a new Styx album.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The fans never get tired of listening to Styx\u2019 classic hits and the band never gets tired of playing them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe can keep things fresh because our catalogue is deep enough,\u201d said Phillips, who had previously been a member of The Babys and Bad English and has played with Coverdale-Page and Ted Nugent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere are songs we have to play. But, even in short sets, we can put in a couple deep cuts &#8212; songs like \u2018Snowblind\u2019 and \u2018Man in the Wilderness.\u2019 There are also places in the show where we can show our musicianship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe also play a cover of the Beatles\u2019 \u2018I Am the Walrus.\u2019 We performed the song at Eric Clapton\u2019s Crossroads Guitar Festival. A live version was released as a single and it entered the Billboard charts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On September 2, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release \u201cStyx: Love at the Orl4eans Arena Las Vegas\u201d via DVD, blu-ray and digital formats. The duo has been meticulous in developing structure that is both elastic and labyrinthine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the tradition of bands such as Bill Laswell\u2019s Last Exit, John Zorn\u2019s Naked City and Ronald Shannon Jackson\u2019s Decoding Society, Ahleuchatistas serves up shards of sonic shrapnel and white-hot free jazz abandon along with impressionistic textures, intricate unison lines, tightly-honed motifs and disciplined, shape-shifting arrangements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The duo is definitely not your average rock and roll band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe band started in Asheville, North Carolina in 2002,\u201d said Parish, during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon from his home in Asheville. \u201cRyan and I met through <a href=\"http:\/\/myspace.com\/\"><span class=\"s4\">myspace.com<\/span><\/a>\u2019s \u2018seeking musicians\u2019 page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Oslance said, \u201cI was a fan of the band in college. When I saw they were looking for a drummer, I auditioned and we hit it off. I grew up in Chicago and moved to Asheville to join the band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Parish said, \u201cWe were a trio but now we\u2019re a duo. The bass player left the band and we decided it would be better to carry on as a two-piece. Actually, Ryan and I had already been doing a two-piece as a side project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This pair interweaves elements of punk rock, jazz, classical music, speed metal, grindcore, progressive rock, noise, folk music from Asia and North Africa, electronic music, and ambient aesthetics, along with volatile, unpredictable improvisation, flowing organically in a virtual world of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re constantly evolving,\u201d said Parish. \u201cIf you listen to the record, it started out looser. We were improvising a lot. Then we created an album &#8212; \u2018Heads Full of Poison\u2019 &#8212; that was more composed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBack when we were doing demos, it was more free-form noise and sound textures. \u2018Heads Full of Poison\u2019 had more arrangements. I was a good blend. The new album is more of the evolution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ahleuchatistas have a wide range of influences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI\u2019ve been listening to a lot of gnawa and Sufi music,\u201d said Oslance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Parish said, \u201cJohn Cage and Terry Riley have definitely been a big influence &#8212; not only with their music but also with their philosophy. Experimental music, electronic music &#8212; all of that is definitely there. I spent a lot of effort on building the band sound. When I\u2019m making records, I have my band contribute rather than be session guys. The quintet\u2019s new album \u201cLike An Arrow,\u201d will be released October 14 on 3 Legged Records\u00a0via Thirty Tigers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The lineup of Blackberry Smoke features Charlie Starr (lead vocals, guitar), Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals), and Brandon Still (keyboards).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe were all in different bands in Atlanta back in 2000 and we all ended up together,\u201d said Starr, during a phone interview Tuesday morning from his home in Atlanta. \u201cThere is a small bunch of people who play the kind of music we play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019re a Georgia rock and roll band. And, much like the early Rolling Stones, we\u2019re a band who also likes country and will occasionally play a country song. If you released Skynyrd\u2019s second album now, it would get played on country radio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWith our band, some people call us a country band or say we\u2019re country rock. I just say we\u2019re a Georgia rock and roll band. The kids that listen to country music today aren\u2019t listening to George Jones or Merle Haggard. Country radio program directors want to supply them with Luke Bryan and acts like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Blackberry Smoke has released five albums in 15 years and has toured virtually non-stop during that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe beat the bushes for awhile,\u201d said Starr. \u201cWhen we formed, we made a D.I.Y. record &#8212; \u2018Bad Luck Ain\u2019t No Crime.\u2019 Jess James Dupree from Jackyl produced it and we went on the road with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSince then, we went with several indie labels and each time it soured. Major labels never came beating on our door. We\u2019ve always been D.I.Y. We made one album with Zac Brown\u2019s label Southern Ground and that label folded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe recorded the new album in January in Kennesaw, Georgia. I had been building up songs for awhile. I sated writing right after we released our last album \u2018Holding All the Roes\u2019 in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe tour so much that I just write whenever I can. When I have a large enough pile of songs, we make a record. The new album was self-produced.
