{"id":28295,"date":"2016-03-02T08:41:28","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T13:41:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=28295"},"modified":"2016-03-02T08:41:28","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T13:41:28","slug":"letter-a-plan-for-ucf-to-cut-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=28295","title":{"rendered":"Letter: A plan for UCF to cut costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>To The Editor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Letters1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1142565\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Letters1.jpg\" alt=\"Letters1\" \/><\/a>As promised a few weeks ago, I am now proposing cost savings that could be\u00a0useful to the UCF budgets, now and in the near future:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"> 1) Heating <\/span>systems could have<span class=\"s1\"> their <\/span>settings lowered lto 2 degrees in all\u00a0buildings. Similarly the cooling systems could be raised<span class=\"s1\"> 1or <\/span>2<span class=\"s1\"> degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\">2) Geo-thermal<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>systems could be <span class=\"s1\">installed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at all buildings to naturally lower\u00a0costs for heating and <span class=\"s1\">air <\/span>conditioning.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\">3) LED lighting fixtures with computerized<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>controls could be installed in the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\">4) Plan to run the buses longer before trading them<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in for new buses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\">5) Use computer programs to optimize bus routes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p12\">6) Evaluate the use of other fuels for <span class=\"s1\">our <\/span>buses such as natural gas or\u00a0electricity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p14\">7) I<span class=\"s1\">nstall <\/span>solar panels to serve each building and cut electric\u00a0 costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p15\">8) Return the student to teacher ratio to the 2003-04 level of <span class=\"s1\">13.2 <\/span>students\u00a0per teacher instead of the<span class=\"s1\"> 2014-15 <\/span>level of<span class=\"s1\"> 12.6 <\/span>students per teacher. The drop in the student to teachers requires<span class=\"s1\"> an <\/span>additional<span class=\"s1\"> 15.5 <\/span>teachers at a<span class=\"s1\"> cost <\/span>of at least<span class=\"s1\"> $1\u00a0<\/span>million annually. This is the latest data I have to establish these ratios. There may\u00a0be\u00a0even more savings <span class=\"s1\">using <\/span>current data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p18\">As before I am still confidant that <span class=\"s1\">commu<\/span>nity volunteers would serve on\u00a0committees to help lower costs in the district I am sure that there are additional\u00a0cost savings that community members could propose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p20\">The <span class=\"s1\">2016-17 <\/span>UCF budget should not exceed $80 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p20\" style=\"text-align: right;\">\n<p class=\"p20\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Bruce Yelton,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p20\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Pocopson<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To The Editor: As promised a few weeks ago, I am now proposing cost savings that could be\u00a0useful to the UCF budgets, now and in the near future: 1) Heating systems could have their settings lowered lto 2 degrees in all\u00a0buildings.
