It began when the Spectrum was the major arena at the southern end of Broad Street and it has continued to the present day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The major difference between the early days and now is that the Spectrum no longer exists and the main arena is the Wells Fargo Center (3601 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia, 215-336-3600, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellsfargocenterphilly.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">http:\/\/www.wellsfargocenterphilly.com<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This year, \u201cDisney on Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic\u201d is coming to the Wells Fargo Center from December 4 through January 3 with an array of morning, afternoon and evening shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The show, which has a huge cast and a lot of big production numbers, features many of Disney\u2019s most popular characters &#8212; all the way from Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to starring trio from \u201cFrozen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe kicked off the tour in September and have played 32 cities so far,\u201d said tour coordinator Adrian Baez, during a phone interview Tuesday morning. \u201cThis show should run for a long time. We have no expiration date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe\u2019ll probably tour North America for awhile and then head overseas eventually. There are five Disney on Ice shows on the road right now. \u2018Frozen\u2019 is the only one with a complete story line. The others have mixed story lines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Traditionally, Disney on Ice has been able to assemble shows using different segments that had been used in prior shows. The \u201cmagic\u201d theme is a good example. Other examples are \u201cDisney on Ice Princesses and Heroes,\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDisney on Ice Passport to Adventure\u201d and \u201cDisney on Ice Worlds of Enchantment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDisney on Ice does shows like these because the audience has changed,\u201d said Baez. \u201cPeople have shorter attention spans and need things that change constantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cShows like \u2018Aladdin\u2019 and \u2018Toy Story\u2019 are harder now because younger audience members get bored. They need something that is colorful and changes rapidly &#8212; something that tells a story in a couple of minutes. There need to be a lot of action, movement and popular songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDisney on Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic\u201d fills that bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe have 51 skaters and the show features 14 stories,\u201d said Baez. \u201cThe producers always come up with a theme. Ours is 100 years because Walt Disney created Mickey Mouse 100 years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This touring show has a cast that includes Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Disney Princesses including Cinderella, Rapunzel, Ariel, Snow White and Tiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the segments features Disney\u2019s \u201cFrozen\u201d with Anna, Elsa and the hilarious Olaf as they discover that true love is the greatest magic of all &#8212; and songs such as \u201cLet It Go,\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019ve Got a Friend in Me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Some of the other stories that are included in the production are Disney Pixar\u2019s \u201cToy Story,\u201d \u201cFinding Nemo,\u201d Disney\u2019s \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d \u201cBeauty and the Beast\u201d and \u201cAladdin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cPeople love the summer scene from \u2018Frozen\u2019 and the song \u2018Let It Go\u2019,\u201d said Baez. \u201cThe opening number is really great too. We start with a marching band to the song \u2018Gotta Be Me\u2019 from \u2018Teen Beach Movie 2\u2019. It\u2019s a really colorful start.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Video link for Disney on Ice &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/PZna16_ntqk\"><span class=\"s2\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/PZna16_ntqk<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ticket prices range from $20-$100.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1248097\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dreamcoat-3-300x200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1248097\" class=\"wp-image-1248097 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dreamcoat-3-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"dreamcoat-3\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1248097\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opens next week at the Merriam.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another great family show for holiday viewing is coming to Philadelphia next week. \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\u201d will run from December 29-January 3 at the Merriam Theater (250 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, 215-893-1999, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kimmelcenter.org\/\"><span class=\"s3\">www.kimmelcenter.org<\/span><\/a>) part of the Kimmel Center\u2019s \u201cBroadway Philadelphia\u201d series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,\u201d which is a sung-through musical with very little dialogue, has a Biblical-based story from \u201cGenesis\u201d about Joseph\u2019s \u201ccoat of many colors.\u201d The show was created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber &#8212; the same team that brought you \u201cJesus Christ Superstar\u201d and \u201cEvita.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One of the key cast members is Alyssa McAnany, an Elon University grad who is a West Chester native.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI now live with my family in Robbinsville, New Jersey but I have a lot of links to Chester County,\u201d said McAnany, during a phone interview Monday morning. \u201cI was born at Chester County Hospital and lived in Avondale when I was born. My parents grew up in Coatesville and were both in the Red Raider Band. My first dance lesson was in Caln Township.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">At Robbinsville High, McAnany was a starter on the Ravens\u2019 state championship soccer team and was also a state medalist in track and field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI did theater and sports when I was in high school,\u201d said McAnany. \u201cIt was challenging &#8212; little hours for sleep. It was hard to decide which to continue with in college. One day, I looked across the soccer field at Robbinsville and saw the theater. It was then that I realized that I wanted musical theater &#8212; that the passion for it was in my gut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt Elon, I graduated with a B.F.A, in musical theater and a minor in communications &#8212; in photography. I even got to write and direct a play when I was in college.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now, McAnany is out on her first national tour as part of the talented cast of \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is a very physically demanding performance,\u201d said McAnany. \u201cThe choreography is very specific. There is no wasted energy. It\u2019s so dynamic. You have to be fit to do all the singing and dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c\u2018Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\u2019 has been around for awhile and people are very familiar with it. It\u2019s been performed in more than 80 cities in 13 countries as well as more than 20,000 local and school productions. It\u2019s been performed a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut, our production is a lot different. One reason is because of choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler\u2019s image and passion for the show. It has contemporary and modern grounding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAnd, the prologue has a different twist. Joseph starts off as a little boy in bed with his teddy bear and pajamas. It begins with the projection of a dream. There is a new song at the end of the show &#8212; and a new version of \u2018Any Dream Will Do.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI love that it\u2019s a family-friendly story and dreams and hopes and forgiveness. It\u2019s really a fun, bright show. And, it leaves you with a message. It is set in a remote village in northern\u00a0Uganda. In the village, which is about two hours north of Uganda\u2019s capitol Kampala, a brutal warlord is threatening the local population. The primary antagonist is the superstitious General, who does not like the missionaries and views them as a threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s4\">Video link for \u201cThe Book of Mormon\u201d &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=OKkLV1zE8M0\"><span class=\"s5\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?feature=player_detailpage&amp;v=OKkLV1zE8M0<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ticket prices ranges from $67-$177.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A show that combines the best of ballet and the excitement of theater is the Pennsylvania Ballet\u2019s annual production of \u201cGeorge Balanchine\u2019s The Nutcracker.\u201d \u00a0This year\u2019s show, which is running now through December 31 at the Academy of Music (Broad and Locust streets, Philadelphia, 215-893-1999, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paballet.org\/\"><span class=\"s3\">www.paballet.org<\/span><\/a>), is the 47<\/span><span class=\"s6\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> annual staging of the classic ballet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ballet is based on E.T.A. Hoffman\u2019s tale \u201cThe Nutcracker and The Mouse King\u201d and set to a score by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky. Her fans found out that the wait was worth it when Williams released her new album \u201cEmerald\u201d earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Williams performs on December 27 at the World Caf\u00e9 Live at the Queen (500 North Market Street, Wilmington, 302- 994-1400,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.queen.worldcafelive.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">www.queen.worldcafelive.com<\/span><\/a>), she will be showcasing tunes from \u201cEmerald\u201d along with gems from her catalogue, which features just under 20 albums, EPs and singles in 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe album was released in April,\u201d said Williams, during a phone interview Tuesday morning from her home in New York\u2019s Hudson Valley. \u201cI recorded it over the winter in seven different studios in Los Angeles, Nashville, Vermont, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Williams\u2019 last two studio albums with new songs were \u201cIn The Time Of Gods\u201d in 2012 and \u201cPromised Land\u201d in 2008. \u201cIn The Time Of Gods\u201d dealt with at Greek mythology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cEmerald\u201d moves in a different direction and features a number of tunes that Williams co-wrote with other artists, including Jim Lauderdale, Jill Sobule, Angel Snow and Bryn Roberts. One of the album\u2019s co-producers was the Hooters\u2019 Rob Hyman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The album was recorded with friends such as Richard Thompson, Jill Sobule, Jim Lauderdale, the Milk Carton Kids, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Suzzy Roche and the Hooters.\u00a0 It marks her debut with the UK label, Bread and Butter (Essential).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI went so many places in making the album because it was easier for me to go to these people than have them come to me,\u201d said Williams, who taught a college course at Wesleyan University and is also the mother of a young child. \u201cI wanted to work with the Hooters and they have their hometown studio in Pennsylvania.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI was one of the album\u2019s producers. In all the different studios, I used six different producers. I was recording the basic tracks up the street here. On one of the songs, my co-producer wanted to go to Vermont and use Will Ackerman\u2019s studio. In Nashville, there were all these incredible musicians coming to the studio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe recording sessions were strewn all over the place but I wasn\u2019t worried about it being uneven. I was the least worried about masking everything uniform because the voice is the main thing. I didn\u2019t have to tweak anything. It came out very uniform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTwo things were constants &#8212; one, there was me; two, they were my friends.
