{"id":23933,"date":"2014-11-21T11:17:49","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T16:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=23933"},"modified":"2014-11-21T11:17:49","modified_gmt":"2014-11-21T16:17:49","slug":"malvern-prep-students-stuff-a-truck-for-needy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=23933","title":{"rendered":"Malvern Prep students &#8216;Stuff a Truck&#8217; for needy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_983915\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Cradles_to_Crayons_20142-300x199.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-983915\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-983915\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"Cradles_to_Crayons_2014(2)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Cradles_to_Crayons_20142-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-983915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Malvern Prep Middle School students, Patrick Gray (Gr. 6) of Havertown, Victor Bucci (Gr. 6) of West Chester and Aidan Gordinier (Gr. 7) of Exton sorted through all of the donations for the Stuff a Truck event earlier this year.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MALVERN \u2014 The goal was to \u201cStuff a Truck,\u201d and that is exactly what Malvern Prep Middle School students did for Cradles to Crayons last month &#8211; filling more than 200 13-gallon bags with goods such as clothes, toys and school supplies for the Philadelphia charity.<\/p>\n<p>Using Malvern\u2019s Homecoming to generate excitement and publicity, the students, with the help of their teachers, held a donation drive that captured the attention of the Malvern community, from fellow students and teachers, to parents and alumni.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe filled 212 bags with the goods we collected. Those donations enable Cradles to Crayons to provide 318 kids with essential items for home, school and play\u201d said Robert Buscaglia, Middle School Spanish teacher and event organizer.<\/p>\n<p>Eighth grader Sean Hanson-Ashworth of Trevose participated in both last year\u2019s and this year\u2019s event. He found great satisfaction from filling the truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018Stuff a Truck\u2019 was one of the best charity events I have done. It is always fun to give back to the community, and Cradle to Crayons provides people with great ways to help out in your local community,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope to work with Cradle to Crayons in the future as I had great time working the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_983917\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Cradles_to_Crayons_201421-300x199.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-983917\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-983917 \" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"Cradles_to_Crayons_20142\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Cradles_to_Crayons_201421-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-983917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Harrington (Gr. 8) of Glenmoore, Austin Yang (Gr. 6) of Malvern and Tommy Simpson (Gr. 6) of Wayne had an important role of cleaning the donations before they were packed away on the truck.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This drive is a continuation of Malvern Prep\u2019s partnership with Cradles to Crayons that began in September 2013 with an initial \u201cBackpack Drive.\u201d Last year, Middle School homerooms were pitted against one another to see who could collect and fill the most backpacks. This drive culminated with an Expedition Day, which was an opportunity for students to hear from local organizations and their efforts to combat childhood poverty and assist low-income families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of the \u2018Backpack Drive\u2019 was two-fold,\u201d said Buscaglia. \u201cOne was to involve the boys in a charitable act, and the second was to take this charitable act one step further and apply an educational aspect &#8211; exploring the idea of childhood poverty through an Expedition Day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Malvern Prep is currently working with Cradles to Crayons on ways to continue cultivating their relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Cradles to Crayons is a national not for profit organization located in Boston and Philadelphia. Its mission is to provide children from birth through age 12, living in homelessness or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive- at home, at school and at play. Items are supplied free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need.
