{"id":23152,"date":"2014-09-15T11:26:17","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T15:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=23152"},"modified":"2014-09-15T11:26:17","modified_gmt":"2014-09-15T15:26:17","slug":"county-buys-generators-for-municipalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=23152","title":{"rendered":"County buys generators for municipalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Birmingham, Kennett, Downingtown, Coatesville among recipients<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Generator-300x232.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-944368\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"Generator\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/Generator-300x232.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a>WEST CHESTER \u2014 At a time when Chester County is celebrating National Preparedness Month, the Chester County Commissioners announce the availability of 188 generators, for use by municipalities in the event of a major power outage.<\/p>\n<p>Purchased through an Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant secured by the County\u2019s Department of Emergency Services, the generators will be used by 37 municipalities in Chester County that have heavily traveled routes and busy intersections regulated by traffic lights.\u00a0 The University of West Chester is also a recipient.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Chester County Commissioners\u2019 Chair Ryan Costello said:\u00a0 \u201cLast winter\u2019s ice and snow storms affected transportation throughout the county like no other in recent history.\u00a0 Even once the routes were cleared of trees and other debris, the lack of electricity meant that travel remained extremely dangerous, especially at busy intersections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Kathi Cozzone commented:\u00a0 \u201cWe appreciate the investment that all 73 of our municipalities make to ensure the safety of Chester County citizens.\u00a0 As it isn\u2019t possible for many of the municipalities to purchase supplemental equipment that is only used in severe weather circumstances, we are pleased to assist them &#8211; and their residents &#8211; with these generators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner Terence Farrell said: \u00a0\u201cBecause of this grant, municipalities will have generators available within their infrastructure stockpile to assist with the powering of traffic lights during a power outage.\u00a0 This reduces the amount of manpower that would be needed at busy intersections, freeing up valuable first responder services for other emergency needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon confirmation of receipt of the UASI grant, the Chester County Department of Emergency Services petitioned all of Chester County\u2019s municipalities to determine the most pressing needs for additional generators, to be used solely for traffic lights.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Kagel, Chester County Deputy Director for Emergency Management, said:\u00a0 \u201cWe asked every municipality to provide us with a list of traffic signal intersection locations where a generator would be needed.\u00a0 In reviewing that list, our plan was to prioritize the distribution of the generators based on daily volume of the intersections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were pleased to find that the funds supplied by the UASI grant were sufficient to cover all 188 generators that were requested by municipalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The municipalities that are receiving the generators will be responsible for the connection, fuel and maintenance costs.<\/p>\n<p>Among the local municipalities receiving generators are: Caln, Downingtown, East Brandywine, Kennet Square, New Garden, Valley, West Brandywine and West Caln.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Birmingham, Kennett, Downingtown, Coatesville among recipients WEST CHESTER \u2014 At a time when Chester County is celebrating National Preparedness Month, the Chester County Commissioners announce the availability of 188 generators, for use by municipalities in the event of a major power outage.
