{"id":20156,"date":"2014-01-06T14:19:32","date_gmt":"2014-01-06T19:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=20156"},"modified":"2014-01-06T14:19:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-06T19:19:32","slug":"stookey-honored-as-eagle-scout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/?p=20156","title":{"rendered":"Stookey honored as Eagle Scout"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_20157\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scout-John-Stookey-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20157\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20157\" style=\"border: 2px solid black; margin: 4px;\" alt=\"Scout-John-Stookey-1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scout-John-Stookey-1-300x291.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scout-John-Stookey-1-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scout-John-Stookey-1-102x100.jpg 102w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scout-John-Stookey-1-40x40.jpg 40w, https:\/\/www.unionvilletimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Scout-John-Stookey-1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-20157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Stookey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>WESTTOWN \u2014 John Stookey of Chadds Ford was awarded Boy Scouting\u2019s highest rank, the Eagle Scout award, at the Troop 93 Court of Honor held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Jan. 4. \u00a0Scoutmaster Tim Jaques made the award.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving the Eagle rank caps Stookey\u2019s Scouting career, which he began as a Tiger Cub in Chadds Ford Pack 31 in 2004.\u00a0 In 2009, he was awarded the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting, and joined Troop 93.<\/p>\n<p>As a member of the troop, Stookey has served in numerous leadership positions, including patrol leader, chaplain\u2019s aide, scribe, instructor, and den chief, and has attended National Youth Leadership Training. \u00a0In 2012, Stookey participated in the troop\u2019s 85-mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.\u00a0 He also attended the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary National Scout Jamboree in Virginia in 2010 as well as the 2013 National Scout Jamboree, which inaugurated the Scouts\u2019 new Bechtel Summit Reserve in West Virginia.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Stookey\u2019s Eagle Scout project was to collect age-appropriate used DVDs, videogames, CDs, and VHS tapes to entertain children when in the hospital.\u00a0 He led the collection of more than 4,000 individual items through troop, neighborhood, and school collections and participation in the annual Chadds Ford Recycle Day.<\/p>\n<p>These items were donated to Vinny\u2019s Kids, a Harrisburg charity founded by Vinny Cherry, now a college student, who endured hospital stays as a child.\u00a0 Vinny\u2019s Kids donated the used media to hospitals and camps serving medically compromised children from throughout Pennsylvania.\u00a0 Cherry attended the Court of Honor with his mother, Camille, and stated that John\u2019s project resulted in the largest single item donation in the 12-year history of the charity.\u00a0 Cherry called the project \u201can exceptional role model for others and an inspiration to volunteers young and old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stookey, 15 years old, is a sophomore at Unionville High School, where he is captain of the junior varsity Academic Team, a member of the Student Council, and active in the Gay-Straight Alliance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WESTTOWN \u2014 John Stookey of Chadds Ford was awarded Boy Scouting\u2019s highest rank, the Eagle Scout award, at the Troop 93 Court of Honor held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Jan. 4. \u00a0Scoutmaster Tim Jaques made the award.
