Hates Cell Phones | CONAN on TBS\" width=\"615\" height=\"346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5HbYScltf1c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>I agree that holding on to that tiny, square box that instantly connects you to the rest of the universe means you are never truly \u201calone.\u201d While this may seem comforting at times (how sad that now I can sit for coffee at Starbucks by myself without feeling weird because I have my phone to keep me company) the bottom line is, being inundated with outside influences quiets our INNER voice.<\/p>\n<p>It is completely understandable how social media sites like Facebook (for old people) and Instagram can decimate self-esteem.\u00a0 What if you post a picture or update your status and nobody \u201clikes\u201d it?\u00a0 Devastating.\u00a0 Or, even worse, people leave nasty comments about the way you look or what you have to say.\u00a0 Horrible.<\/p>\n<p>I love how Louis describes how children (by nature) are mean.\u00a0 They \u201ctry out\u201d hurtful things.\u00a0 Texting something that you would NEVER say to a person\u2019s face is much easier.\u00a0 Hiding behind a computer or cell phone emboldens and empowers and, unfortunately, not always for good. \u00a0Kids rarely have face-to-face conversations.\u00a0 My husband loves to tell the story about picking up our son and a friend from a school dance.\u00a0 Not a word spoken on the way home.\u00a0 Heads bent and thumbs flying, they were \u201ctalking\u201d to EACH OTHER on a group chat.<\/p>\n<p>If children as young as elementary school age have smart phones, how can we fix this problem?\u00a0 It is my personal opinion that kids in the lower grades and middle school do not have the maturity to handle unfettered access to the internet.\u00a0 Third graders do not need Snap Chat.\u00a0 I question whether high schoolers can handle it, but technology is not going away any time soon.\u00a0 The better solution may be to restrict the amount of time we all spend with a phone in hand.<\/p>\n<p>I know that I am guilty of carrying my phone everywhere.\u00a0 And, while I do NOT text and drive, I do look at my phone at (almost) every red light.\u00a0 WHY? \u00a0It\u2019s a terrible habit and I need to break it.<\/p>\n<p>So, for today, let\u2019s try to talk to each other, maintain eye contact and engage in some POSITIVE dialogue!<\/p>\n<p>What ideas\/solutions do YOU have?\u00a0 Please comment below.<\/p>\n<p>Happy Weekend!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Technology is great, but does anyone talk face to face anymore?
