Words of wisdom from my mom end up coming out of my mouth…<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"UTNuKellyColumn\"<\/a>Mothering is part instinct, part learned behavior.\u00a0 This much we know is true.\u00a0 I have, on countless occasions, become so much like MY mother, we are almost indistinguishable.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t help that we walk, talk and look the same.\u00a0 Now, I find myself repeating verbatim her words of wisdom to my boys\u2026<\/p>\n

  • It is unacceptable to call me \u201cshe\u201d (as in, \u201cshe\u201d told me that I didn\u2019t have to put my laundry away).\u00a0 I am ONLY to be referred to as \u201cMom\u201d, \u201cMother\u201d or \u201cMommy\u201d.\u00a0 Never in the third person.<\/li>\n
  • Sleepovers are stupid.\u00a0 You will end up with strep throat two days later, so don\u2019t ask me. The answer is usually \u201cno\u201d.<\/li>\n
  • Make your bed as soon as you exit it. \u00a0I understand that no one else will see it.\u00a0 I will see it, and that is all that matters.<\/li>\n
  • We don\u2019t \u201cdunk\u201d cookies in milk, pizza crust in soda, etc.<\/li>\n
  • Self-expression is fun on Halloween; otherwise, conformity is just fine.<\/li>\n
  • Never drink out of a friend\u2019s water bottle (see aforementioned strep throat concern)<\/li>\n
  • You can tell me until you are blue in the face what so-and-so\u2019s mother is letting him do.\u00a0 I don\u2019t care.\u00a0 Really.<\/li>\n
  • Always tell the truth.\u00a0 Because, I do have eyes in the back of my head and super-human hearing and I will find out.<\/li>\n
  • Be nice to your brother.\u00a0 Friends may come and go, but a sibling is a friend for life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    I think that the most important part of being a mother is to act like a parent NOW, so that you can be friends LATER.\u00a0 If you make decisions so that you will be perceived as \u201ccool\u201d it will end badly.\u00a0 Kids crave stability and consistency\u2026even if they think they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

    I talk to my mom and two sisters multiple times per day. \u00a0We are an inseparable group.\u00a0 I can only pray that my boys will remain as attached to me when they are parents.<\/p>\n
